Trish I hope your birds are doing better. This stuff is a mess. I am still battling the sneezes with the d'uccles. It disappears and then the weather changes and they start sneezing again. Seems thought that is all that happens though.
Okay all I really need some ideas. I have been loosing chicks cause they get pasty butt. It's the ones in the house. I have the bins cleaned out and disinfected. I have been disinfecting the waterers and everything. I used an thermometer and checked the temp and it is excellent.. right on 90 degrees under the light and they can move around. I tried bird grit that Josie recommended. I am feeding purina chick starter. I even stopped feeding FF to this group because I thought it might be a problem. I am still feeding it in the outside brooder though and they are doing great.
I just can't figure out what is causing the problem. I check them as often as I can but it seems like once they get pasty even if I get them cleaned up they go downhill and die. This is a real plague and I am at a loss of what to do. I can't afford to loose more chicks. My latest victim is one of my turkey babies. That really bothers me. Anyone have any ideas whatsoever about what could be going wrong? I am brooding just like I always have. There must be something I am missing.
Hawkeye I have some great barred rocks I got from Eileen and they are the right size and body form. It's just that they don't have the fine barring that Franks do. I figured I could take Frank's roo and try to breed better bars into them. I am sure I have several boys in my chicks but I'm not wanting to wait that long for breeding. Since I only had him hold two pullets for me I don't want them to take up a special coop pen space.
I really wish I had asked him to save back more girls for me. I had planned to just use the barred rocks for egg layers but they are so awesome I have to go ahead and breed them.
Trish I may have an extra BCM roo. I have someone coming to buy a pair to show for 4H but there could be more of them out there. I just need one I think.
I just sold my extra lavender boys. I kept two of them so I had a back up or I'd sell you one of those. They are gorgeous lavenders too... not the washed out pale color a lot are.
I meant to mention I sold Mammahen a couple chicks that came from crossing the lemon cuckoo orpingtons with the lavender hens. They look like they will be lavender barred. It will be interesting to see how they turn out when they are older.
This may sound simple and you have probably already done this but just figured I would post it anyway,, when mine start getting pasty butt I take some infant nail scissors with that rounded tip and I trim all the fluff from around the vent so nothing can stick anymore. I give AVC or probiotics, both seemed to help alot. I moisten the feed with water so they get plenty of fluids.

Danz, I wouldn't have a clue about what is going on, it sounds like you're doing everything right.

I really like the two little blue barred rock pullets I got from Eileen. The barring is more blurred than the regular barred rocks, but it's an interesting color. Of course they're just small right now so we'll see how they look when they're grown.

I'm going to get one of those lavender roosters from JeannieC that she has extra to replace my guy I just lost. I just want to wait until I get my flock well first so I don't infect him too. I'm really wondering if I want another BCM rooster. This is two now besides a hen that I have lost since I got them & it just seems like when an illness comes they are the first to go. They don't seem like hardy birds at all & aren't good layers. I'm thinking maybe I will just see if I hatch a Welsummer rooster in the eggs I just put in the bator & keep him for my dark eggs & my flock rooster. I still maybe could produce some olive eggers with him. Danz what do you think? My Welsummer eggs have been about as dark as my Marans eggs were & they're better layers. I have one Marans hen left, but she rarely ever lays. I doubt if I replace her when she dies, they just have seemed more like big freeloaders to me. The rooster was gorgeous, but he was one of the first to die of this illness. I need hardier birds & it seems like the Welsummers are more hardy than the Marans.

Sorry for the yucky picture, but one of the quarantined chickens poo'd this...blood? Normal? Treatments? I am about to take them back to the guy I bought them from! I wonder if he'd give me my money back? I am certain at least the sneezing one was sick when I got it. I got it Saturday night and noticed the sneezing the next day. What do yall think?

Looks like you have a coccidia infection. Do you have any corid to mix in the water for them?

Josie, I have to say I have really missed you being on here. I am also going to miss you being close.
I did put ACV in their water and I have used probitics as well. I am monitoring the temp but they have lots of room to move if it gets too warm and they aren't acting stressed at all. I recently replaced my bins for the house. I guess I could add some corid to their water. Since they are on medicated feed should I use it at half strength rather than full cure strength?

pikeman, you keep that snow up there! We're not supposed to have snow here until Sat. night & less than an inch, I hope they're right.

We're supposed to get snow today too. It looks like it, but it just hasn't come down yet. Very dark and gloomy and cold here.
I spent over an hour loading and unloading incubators. I am only hatching a few breeds right now and I can see I am going to have way too many eggs to hatch when I start hatching all the new ones. I honestly think I am going to have to buy more incubators. I only have capacity for about 800 chicken eggs right now plus whatever is in the hatcher. Sounds like a lot but when you get big eggs like Turkey, duck, peacock and goose eggs in there you loose space really quickly. I ordered a new hatching tray for the goose and peacock eggs but you sure can't get many eggs in them. You can hatch maybe 20 or so in the space you could hatch around 85 chicken eggs. When the guineas and the pheasant start laying that is a bunch more. I have one incubator completely full of duck eggs and it only took a week to gather that many.
DH is going to kill me if he sees me ordering another incubator. He thinks I have way to much to do as it is. But the point is to make some money on some quality birds. To do that means more hatching. I think I need one of those big commercial incubators and a building to put it in!!!

I have about 15 more minutes of sit down time before I'm off and running again. I've read up on everyone but just don't have time to reply to all.

I'm having a whirlwind of a day after yesterday's excellent adventure with Danz and Deerfield! Gosh that was a hoot! Thanks for letting me tag along Danz, I so enjoyed it. She's right about Frank. He's knows it all. I learned quite a lot yesterday too. I'll share later when I have a bit more time. I was still thinking everything over last night and couldn't sleep! So, I'm blazing around today with one thing after the next in a blur of sleep deprivation. I'm enjoying it all anyway. I've had only one hour of down time today and it is quickly coming to a close. Once I get up I'm going to be hopping again until 9:30 tonight. Life is grand, even on cold, blustery days! The grandness will begin to fade if we get any of that white stuff -- sorry, Pikeman, we're buds, but please, keep that snow to yourself!

Josie, just had to say it's great to hear from you! I love it that you could see your little show off in action -- that's just awesome!

Sorry, everyone about those sick birds.

Hawkeye, it just makes me sick to think about you moving. I will PM you later with a little scrap of info from my DH. It's nothing to get too excited about, just someone in HR to contact directly.

Gotta run...
