Consolidated Kansas

Looks like you have a coccidia infection. Do you have any corid to mix in the water for them?

Roosterlew sorry I failed to welcome you. It's that time of year where I feel like I run non-stop and my brain does stop due to overload. I know several people that raise what you want but not close to you.
I about froze while I was out feeding. I did take the camera though. My silly Bourbon Red boy would not show off for me. I took some pictures anyway. He is so impressive when he is all puffed out but you can see what pretty colors he has anyway. Click to enlarge pics.

Here he is with the two hens. Look at the difference in color!!!

Here is one of my new Barred rock pullets. Look at the definition of those lines.

And here is my new boy! He's in the bachelor pad right now.

And here is a pick of my exhibition orps. This hen these guys are standing by is huge. So you can imagine how tall these guys are ..and they aren't done growing yet.

And my blue slate Tom said he would show off even if Mr. Red wouldn't. I still think he is an awesome and beautiful boy!
All of these birds are lovely. I love turkey plumage!
MrsDanaMiller: X2. Agreed, Corid is your answer. BTW-- this is something a LOT of chickens get. Even if you raise them yourself, this is something they can get anyway. Using medicated chick starter helps them fight it off when they are babies. But not always.
Ok, yeah. I have been doing a lot of research and I guess coccidiosis is very common, and chickens build up a resistance (?) to it...in which some sloughing off of intestinal tissue is normal. So how do I know if this is sloughing of tissue or a sign of a big problem? I haven't seen anymore stools like that one earlier. I didn't get the meds at Atwoods today because I don't want to treat them if I'm going to take them back to the seller tomorrow. *Sigh*

I just don't know if I should get my money back and invest in more chickens from the other healthy flock, or what. What would you guys do? For those who didn't see I have 3 quarantined chickens, one of which is sneezing, two of which have some crusties on their beaks, and one of which had a bloody dropping. I have an appointment with the seller to give them back tomorrow. Is that what you guys would do? I just feel bad for the seller...he didn't realize they were sick, and he felt really bad when I called him earlier. (Maybe I just feel bad for him and that is why this decision is so hard lol). Any input is appreciated. You guys are my chicken lifeline...I am realizing just how much I DON'T know! :)

mrsdanamiller, I think if I were you I would return the chickens to him. It's going to cost you more to treat them & there is a chance they might not fully recover. Just make sure before you get any more that you really disinfect where you kept those chickens.

I don't think the sneezing and crusties are a function of coccidiosis. Both of those symptoms could indicate something much more serious.

I agree with the person who recommending disinfecting everything. I would also be sure to disinfect myself before moving between the new chickens and any you already have somewhere else.

There are real horror stories out there about transferred respiratory problems from new chickens that can wipe out the flock.

x2. Wear different clothes and shoes and wash hands thoroughly between the two flocks. It is best to start with the healthy flock and move over to the sick flock rather than the other way around, but then change out of those clothes before going out there again.

How is the weather for everyone this morning? It is kind of misty here - not really raining but everything looks a little damp.

In defense of the guy that sold you the chickens. The stress of moving them might have made them sick. If you buy birds, that is one major reason why you quarantine them. It certainly doesn't mean he sold you sick birds. Chickens carry around all kinds of virus and bacteria and when they get stressed it causes it to become an infection of the same. If he is willing to take them back I would do so but I certainly wouldn't point fingers of blame at him. There are just some things you can't control. I normally do not buy adult birds for that reason. But of course I just did.
I have several in quarantine right now.
I've got to go get a load of feed today. I am hoping when DH decides to get up that he will offer to go get it.
We have snow predicted all weekend. This is so ridiculous. I was hoping to have the start of a garden in by now.
I have some chicks hatching today. Also have a few goose eggs in the hatcher. I sure hope they hatch. It seems like the goose girls are slowing down on laying a little. I have one that went broody and I don't know if she has just one egg or that is all she has on top when she gets up.
I need to get my taxes done. I haven't done them yet. It's just one more thing that I haven't found time for.

That bourbon tom is stunning!!! WOW! And his color is just amazing! Double WOW!! I love the blue slate, too! Yeah, I'm loving my Frank rocks! :)

So far he seems very laid back, which I really like. All of Frank's birds are very wary of me - in that sense I think you guys made the right choice getting chicks so they won't be so afraid of people.
We're so busy right now, we're not doing a lot of handling of the chicks, but they do get played with. So hopefully they will be some what tame. I want them to come to us so we can pick them up and not chase them down when they need treatment, etc.

Oh, I forgot, my occasional layer (Welsumer) actually laid 2 eggs this week. It figures. I just treated them with ivermectin, so we can't eat them, but they are sure pretty. She hasn't laid reliably since her best friend died when they were about a year old. These are the first dark brown eggs in several months.
yay on the eggs!!

I went down to Orschelyn's tonight to get the chicks I was wanting, but the shipment didn't come, so while I was there I ran into my friend & ended up going to her place & helping her load a pile of livestock panels onto her trailer to bring to my place.

A friend of mine came over earlier this evening to get some eggs & had her little grandson with her. They were standing looking at the turkeys while I finished up feeding my birds & my tom was really showing off displaying for them. He really seems to like women a lot, he just displays & gobbles a bunch when any female is near, what a show off. I had her little grandson come over & watch me bottle feed the baby goat & picked her up & let him pet her, he seemed to enjoy that. My two GPs aren't used to small children & they weren't sure if they liked him or not, he's kind of a pistol.
I would hate to pass up a good deal on fencing just because its expensive anyway! Sounds like a fun visit with your friend and her grandson! :)

Take them back and don't feel bad. It's a GOOD thing you didn't mix the two flocks. THAT is exactly why you don't! I go even longer than usual when I quarantine-- but that's because I have the room to do so. I bought a bunch of nice silkies at Nationals-- brought back 6 adults and put them all out in the barn since my flock was in the backyard. Then I made sure to switch clothing when dealing with the two flocks. I did my flock in the mornings and then did them in the evenings. But I agree with Danz-- they do get sick from being stressed and moved. I've had 4 or 5 birds shipped to me just last year and 3 of the 5 came down sick with sniffles from being stressed. They recovered well, but I was worried! They have not been sick since. The blood in the poop IS serious. If they are sloughing off lining and blood, that is an advanced symptom of cocci. Early symptoms show NO blood in the poop and just ruffled feathers. The blood would REALLY worry me.

Same here-- cold and misty and dark. Bleah. I just hope there will be no snow!

This weather is NUTS. I just can't say it enough. I may not ever get any eggs from my silkies!! If we end up moving quickly, that could really throw them off. This is just turning into a complain fest for me. I am having some eggs shipped in, I can't stand not hatching anything at all! Hope you get your taxes done! NO FUN!

BTW-- I keep forgetting to say that even though I'm pretty sure we're moving (holding out for that 1% chance we could stay..) I'll continue to post here. I don't think I'll ever feel like an Oakie. Sigh. :( I can't really even imagine really moving, it seems like such a distant thing right now. We're so settled in and have always thought of this place as our forever home, it's tough to wrap my mind around.

Hawkeye~~~ I really makes me sad that you guys cannot find something there in Wichita!! I know things are tight, and jobs are being cut, or not replacing when people retire, but with your DH and his knowledge, that is just insane. Hey did you get the enevelope I mailed? I just cant hardly stand the thought of you moving.

Trish~~~
Now, the colds, I have been using the Tylan 200. I didn't go back and look, to see who posted, but when I hear a sneeze, I give 1/4 cc in the breast for 3 days. Seems to knock it right out. Once I give the first shot, then I mix up some Neomed 325, and put in the auto water. Just to cover everyone else. I have not had any more problems, and not have any birds showing any problems. By using this route, I have not had to use any Baytril, but I still have it on hand.

I love the exibition barred rocks, but they kinda make me dizzy looking at them for some reason, so I don't want any.

You guys are making me jealous with all the talk of rain/snow. The most recent snow that central and eastern KS got that was like 1 1/2 feet between the two storms.. we got like 6 inches from the first one and totally missed out on the 2nd one... It is SO DRY out here still... The grass is still very brown. I'm worried that we're not going to have any grass in the yard this year because the ducks, geese, and dogs have trampled everything pretty badly. If we don't get any rain, we won't have any grass in the pasture for the horses either. My DH and I are hoping to get a couple of calves this year but we won't be able to if we don't have the grass to support the extra livestock.

The forecast is calling for around a foot of snow here this weekend with blizzard-like conditions. As strange as it may sound to the rest of you, I really hope we get it. We REALLY need it. My biggest concern though is that this weekend is the end of spring break for a lot of folks and the beginning of it for others... There will likely be A LOT of people planning to be on the roads when the weather is not looking good for travel... I am not looking forward to being snowed in (my DH has to take the 4x4 pickup to work - he works midnights this weekend in THIS weather - ugh!), but I am looking forward to at least having internet this time around! The last time we got lots of snow was right in the middle of the 2 weeks my internet was down.

On a good note, we got .14" of rain last night about bedtime. I fell asleep to the sound of rain last night for the first time in what seems like a REALLY long time (about a year). Sadly, it was barely enough to even wet the dirt, but I'm not going to complain. I'll take any moisture we can get right now.

Aw I am so sorry Hawkeye! Praying it will all work out! I have always lived here and couldn't imagine moving either.

I am not complaining about the weather this year. This time last year it was very warm and my hop plants were already shooting out of the ground! I think by the first or second week of April I had 12' bines. That kind of growth shouldn't happen until about May or June. The last two years were a bit tough on the harvest with two years ago being the worst. I think that was the first time we harvested in July, which should never happen.
