Consolidated Kansas

Quote: Keeping. I am enjoying the success. The quail color on a lot of them is really pretty, and now we're moving into barring, so there will be some lovely crele. I really want them to be camoflaged well, so that's perfect.

Is it raining anywhere else in KS? I'm miserable in here... it's been thunder-storming for ages!
It will be soon....where are you? Wondering how long we have and whether it will be dry tonight. If not, I have work to do.

I am so behind on posts!! We've been busy over here as always. I moved my five week olds out to the newly built coop last night! I was rather nervous but I think they did fine. I am worried about the weather coming up over the weekend. Do you all think that it will be too cold for them to stay out there? Should I move them back inside for those few days or see how they do? The coop is not insulated, but there is a thick layer of bedding on the bottom. I also made a window on one side that I'm thinking will need covered up before then? What should I do to prepare?
I would staple plastic over the window (even an old feedbag) to cut drafts and moisture blowing in, and I'd set up a heat source of some kind. Please be sure to run a screw through the clamp if you use a clamp lamp to protect against a fire should it fall...it's a common failure and has been devastating to many. Even using an electric oil-filled radiator is safer than that, and they work very well.

I have a 1/2 Silkie in gorgeous multiple-laced silver partridge that just needs to be bred back to my Black roo, and I think that would be stunning. It is still typey, but would need work, obviously. I can't decide if I want to keep the Silkies or not...

I'm parting with a pair of Royal Palms, a year old.

*sigh*

My guess is top one pullet & the bottom one rooster. I have had a really hard time with the two blue barred ones I got from Eileen, but now I'm leaning towards both being roosters, ack! So they may have to get processed with my meat chickens because I sure don't need roosters. I hate to do that, but I have no use for them if they for sure end up being what I think they are. I picked out two of the ones she had with the smallest combs & this is how they're developing, you just can't tell till they're bigger.
I have to agree. Top one of Hawkeye is pullet the second one a cockerel.
Trish don't give up on those chicks yet. Rocks have really big combs when they are young. Hawkeye your bird with the red leakage really has a lot of red. The one I got only has red around the face. You know if that was crossed with a Hamp it would be a laying machine. I obviously got a crossed Hamp in my group of chicks and it looks just like any normal red star. I'm just goign to let it be a layer when it grows up.

If you want to leave them run a heat source out to them and cover the window and they should be fine with that.
Good to see you post. I certainly understand too many projects. I wanted to get everything down to just a few pens together and it keeps getting worse and worse. I need to make some choices although I am down to just the breeds I want to keep.

Well it was another very busy day here. The fence is up. It's all done but I have to put in a gate to the pasture soon. And I have to purchase and hang my driveway gate. The fence already did it's job today. The ducks were going to go play in the ditch and couldn't figure out how to get there so they turned around and went elsewhere. I'm sure they'll realize the driveway is open though. I wish I had the back of the property done with hot wire and I might be able to rest a little easier.
I got the guineas moved to their new pen although they don't have a house. And I got the pen they were in moved to a grassy area. Then got all the baby ducks moved outside into that pen. I sure hope they stay warm enough the nest few days. I hung a heat lamp for them. I was going to hang a sweeter heater but figured the heat lamp would probably radiate more heat inside the little coop even if they weren't underneath it.
I had my last goose egg hatch today and the goose is in with baby chicks. I had moved all the rest of them out to the green house yesterday. The broody goose got off the nest yesterday and she was still off today. So I checked the nest. She had one of the duck eggs I put in there and no goose eggs. Surprisingly it was alive and looks close to hatching so I stuck it in the incubator. I figured she gave up on it cause it had died but I guess she just got tired of sitting.
I was surprised to find another peafowl egg in the white hens pen and then even more surprised to find 2 eggs in the pen with the pied peafowl. She isn't even 2 years old yet so I sure didn't expect her to lay yet. Makes me wish I had already moved her in with the white boy. I've been trying to sell the pied boy so I could move her.
I still ran out of time to start the next hoop coop. I really really need to get it done. There just aren't enough hours in the day.

I'm in the Flint Hills. The rain is pouring down! There is some thunder and lightning too. Except I love that!

I've noticed a few posting about allergies. I suffer from allergies as well. A few years ago I started using natural honey from someone local to me. A couple of teaspoons a day really helps!

would anyone here who hopefully does't live to far be interested in a turken chick and a silver laced wyandotte chick? both were picked from pullet bins. i sadly have to decrease the number of ckicks i have and so these are the two that need a new good home.

the chicks...

Well Danz, I wouldn't think as much about the big red combs on those blue barred rocks, but I think I'm starting to see rooster tails & hackle feathers, just the beginning. It's hard to tell for sure yet, but it's sure pointing to them both being roosters. I sure was looking forward to seeing what color egg they would lay because of what they're crossed with, but if I'm right I won't be seeing that.

I've got to get out tomorrow rain or shine & do a little work to get ready for the weather coming. Today was just me chasing my tail all day, it seemed like the faster I went the more behind I got. I finally got the 3 brooders in the garage cleaned out & the chicks in the smallest brooder moved over to the next bigger one. I have one more brooder, the one in the sunroom to clean tomorrow & then I'm good for awhile again. I didn't end up getting any work done today on the hoop coop, it just wasn't happening. So I guess I'll have to wait till this cold front is over & get back to it then. I sure wanted to get more done on it this week. You can only do so much by yourself though. Karen you don't know how lucky you are to have so many little helpers, wow I would love to borrow them sometimes.

It's midnight and still 67 degrees here. No rain. I sat out on the deck this afternoon watching dogs and chickens and reading and enjoying myself in the sun. Then we spent about 20 minutes at the garden hoeing a few weeds and watering. Now my neck, shoulders, and the fronts of my legs are sunburned.

DH has been mowing for a month now. People's grass is growing so fast he's having to bag it, so he's giving me a break here at the beginning of the season. We're both hoping it will give my back a fighting chance to survive summer and still make progress. Last year I spent a lot of money on medical care and the only "progress" was that I didn't get any worse.

I am 266 posts behind, long week! Miss Amelia surprised us by coming a bit early last weekend!!! She was born at 1:14 AM on Sunday, April 21 weighing 6 lbs 13 oz and 20 inches long. Forty eight hours of labor but she was well worth the wait!

I am new here, but what an absolutely precious baby! Congrats on such a wonderful milestone in your life!

I've heard before that LOCAL honey can help with environmental allergies. I'll have to pass that on to my daughter.
