Consolidated Kansas

That is a lovely looking garden. Is the cut out so you can access all of it to weed without walking into it?
yes that was the plan...I was not sure how everything would grow so the squash is still hard to get to and I must walk in to get it to.
next year the spaghetti squash will grow up like the cucumbers do in the back left corner. I will be doing more okra next year as well ( I only did 2 for the first time this year) and then hopefully I can figure out how to space the squash better...the barrels in the back where for potatoes...

I like imapweather.com for watching the weather online, since we don't have cable, we only get the weather on channel 12.2! It does say 40% for Hutch area! but right now it says 10% and after 5 pm it goes to 20% ..still not much of a chance!

I do love my worms, but did not get many in our garden this year. We built a raised bed this year, 2 cinder bricks tall, and filled it with aged horse manure, so not many worms yet. My son (6) wanted a worm farm but never got around to doing it!

Here is the garden back on June 17th . It sure has grown alot since then but I also lost 3 squash plants due to squash bettle. The sweet peas and green beans died (the soil might be to rich) I added 5 more tomato plants but am still waiting for them to green up. I have also not gotten any pepper either..

What a pretty garden. Most of ours is in a community garden area. I grow herbs, some leafy greens, and asparagus at home.

Do you have problems with squash bugs every year? We have, at the community garden. I just try to get as much as possible before they take the plants out. They take them out one by one, which I guess is better than losing them all at once. My MIL has never had a squash bug in her life, and she's always grown squash.

HEchicken, I think you mentioned earlier about learning your lesson with tomatoes and chicken poop? I think we might not have learned it yet. Back at the very beginning of the season when we transplanted my tiny little seedlings, we put down a very light layer of shavings from the coop. Now my tomatoes are huge, and I mean HUGE. There are tomatoes growing, but I'm not sure how they're going to get enough sunlight in there to ripen. There aren't a ton of tomatoes, either. I haven't been out to look in the last couple of days. Those tomatoes may have eaten the rest of the garden by now!

This is the first time in about 3 years that i have tried squash, because the last time I lost them both and was so frustrated. I read that DE will help against them, so I will try that next year. Another thing I noticed and read is that if you plant one early, and the rest later, then they will all go to the one plant and leave the others, or atleast not that bad.
I had one plant that got eaten on by wild birds and lost all the leaves. It slowly grew back and there is hardly any stem damage on it compared to the others that are all ready gone....

My broody hen and chick are practically living in a mansion X3 my mom got a free elevated baby play pen for them to stay in. It works great because its plenty big and they cant kick the wood shavings out, it's also very easy to clean. The chicky seems go enjoy the room and mama bird has plenty of room.to get up abed move if she feels like it. I think this is a preety good way to reuse a old play pen :) I will try and upload some pictures later. On another topic we put our 3 guinea keets outside in the pen with the egg birds. They seem to enjoy it, but we had to clip there wings which they did not seem to enjoy. So that's what I did to day and to anyone going to the Johnson county fair I'm going to be there almost the whole time so I hope to see you there :)

Josie, it's too bad you're fairly far away or we'd get some birds from you.

Trish, we will definitely get some pure Ameraucanas from you next spring. That would be the perfect time to get them. I don't care about the egg color. My son LOVES the breed. We got a male as a bonus chick last year, and Trent stole him first thing. We let the kids pick what breed they want to raise. We've also got White and Black Langshans (other son) and LF Cochins (daughter--she's wanting to specialize in blue but our son in buff barred). Gma has Turkens, and the kids want to make a Turken/EE hybrid: bearded with a naked neck

. Those Turkens are UGLY, but they seem to be a tame bird--even Gma's roo!

Oh, chicken math...my curse!!!! But, boy, do I love my ladies!!!

ChickieWickies, I should have lots of chicks available next spring, I just bought a new matching hatcher to my cabinet incubator this summer so it will be getting lots of use then. I only got a short time to use it after it came this year, but I will enjoy it next year. I just didn't have enough room in the small incubator I was using for a hatcher so I decided to go for it & get the bigger one since I will be adding even more breeds next year than I had this year. I have had a few setbacks with my breeding stock, but hopefully by then I will have it all ironed out.

Boy it's hot out there today, I just came back in after my buyer left who picked up the last two Ameraucana chicks I had along with her Swedish Flower Chicks she came for & the pair of Cream Legbars. I had thought she was coming next weekend for those, but she managed to get here today instead, so that was great. Then I had to water some birds & rabbits while I was out there & spray the rabbits down. They don't take the heat too well & even though they're in the deep shade they get really hot. They're not crazy about their shower, but it has to make them feel better for awhile. My turkey hens wanted back into their pen so they could get in the duck water & stand to cool off their feet, they get really hot too. I started building my duck pen last night, so I guess I'm going to have to leave the sled for the turkeys to get into & give the ducks the wading pool when I move them. It's been too darned hot out there today to work any more on the pen, it looks like it's supposed to be a few degrees cooler tomorrow so maybe then I can get out there again.

When you see the beetles on your plant and laying eggs you can wrap duct tape inside out on your hand and it will take all the eggs off your plant and save your squash harvest, otherwise its almost impossible to pick off the bug eggs otherwise.

Sorry! We live in Towanda now! Just north of Andover. Let me know if you are interested and I can put pics up her or msg them to you before I list them for sale.

Who knew that making plans to build a coop and run could be so hard and frustrating! We are trying to save money first off and make it as cheaply with recycled parts as possible. Pallets and a old playground my mom has so far. I am wanting the coop 8x5 and after my husband built the frame he told me that most plywood runs 8x4 and it would be easier to make it 8x4...

The run will be 13' x 10' that includes under the coop. I want to be able to roof in the whole area but money wise, its not going to be possible right now. I found some trusses that would be perfect for the whole 13x10 area but they are 1 1/2 hours away on the other side of Wichita. It looks like we will try to just cover the coop and the run part right next to it for a total of 8x10.

The chicks I am hoping to get are already 9 days old and she said she can keep them until they are feathered out! I sure hope we can get it done by then otherwise I will be waiting until spring

Is this part always hard or are we just thinking to hard?
