Lizzy she needs to be put on antibiotics. The infection is in her blood stream if she is running a fever. For chickens you would use penicillin G and inject it in the breast but I'm not sure if geese can be given penicillin. You'd need to check that. Baytril is safe but it is pretty pricey unless you have some on hand. You can get it from the vet.I gave my goose Baytril shots. About 1 ml for a full sized goose...so less than that for a duck.
ashncarson, that is awesome. I love anything nature related like that. Have you ever been to the Butterfly Palace in Branson, MO?

Call me Ashley or Ash! I have been to the butterfly Palace but not for about 5 years! I wanted to go last night while we where in Branson but its so $$. We go to Branson at least once a year. I have grown up going there my whole life! My grandparents even lived near till until last fall after my Grandpa's death! But its like a home away from home!

Here he is opened up and dried.

I have mine housed with my peafowl in a hoop coop. If they don't come in at night you tend to lose them. I started out this year with about 16 I think & I'm down to 10 adults left. I try to get them all in every night, but they're not the smartest birds around. It takes me awhile every night to get them to go in. I have 4 more young ones in the growout pen I haven't put in there yet for some replacements. I just wanted them to get a little size before I put them in there so they don't get picked on so much. Guineas are pretty mean birds when there is something smaller to pick on. Anyway, they seem to like being in with the peafowl rather than chickens & roost on the same roost with them. I think the peafowl are kind of happy though when they go out during the day since they're so noisy, they get some quiet time without them for a few hours.

I have two big sunflowers that were volunteers that I have just left grow where they are. I figured eventually they would flower & produce some seed for my birds. I should try to grow some more next year too, my chickens love them.

I spent about an hour out working in the mud trying to get my turkey pen emptied of water again & cinch up the top of the pen & put the support pole back up. We had quite a bit of rain again last night & it's just a mess out there. I think I got it fixed for now, but I plan to see about making some arched supports for it this weekend out of plastic pipe. I have to figure out something to keep the water from pooling up on top of that. The span is too much for the things I have on the other pens. I'm thinking of moving my turkeys anyway when I get this other hoop coop built into that & use their pen after I get it fixed for my growout pen. I need the other hoop coop for my Orps I'm growing out.

We have a flood watch out for today here, we have had a lot of rain in the last week. The Cowley Country fair is this weekend, so I hope the river doesn't come out of the banks or it will flood the fairgrounds. We often have flooding here in Sept. & Oct. but it's strange to have it in July.
Thank you. I don't have any peafowl so they will have to be happy with the chickens. I am planning out my sunflower patch for next year, I just love how easy they are and how much the birds love them.
Danz, we had some pullets like that. It was the group of three young white Langshans. They are younger than the others and would stay together and away from the others. I went out every night for a week and put them in the coop by hand. They finally got the point and started doing it themselves. Glad you got some of this rain. We need to mow (didn't say that much last year) but the ground is too wet. The gauge said we got 1/2" but I think it's leaking. The whole area around us got 1"-2 1/2" and our ground is still wet this afternoon.

Maidenwolf, I love the sunflower idea. We have an area that would be perfect next to the coop. Now we just have to wait almost a whole year!!!

Trish, will you have any birds at the fair? We'll be there with 9 of them. Our club is putting on a costume contest for all 4-Hers and their livestock on Sunday at 3 in the arena. It should be a hoot. We're hoping we'll have at least one entry of all the animals represented. So far we have about 30 who said they're doing it. River stay away!!! When those fairgrounds flood, it is usually underwater for days if not weeks!!
Yes a year to plan though. I cant wait to make my bigger patch for next year.
Hey Trish. I found this picture. You mentioned you couldn't imagine what a cuckoo lavender orpington would look like. This is a beautiful example. I am hoping to produce some just as good.
Beautiful bird

Hi All, I'm a transplanted Okie living on the edge of the Flint Hills. DH and I got into the chicken thing when we bought out a beekeeper that had chickens she needed to get rid of as she was moving out of state. Besides the bees we brought home 3 older hens, 7 chicks ( couldn't catch their mom ), 1 duck and 2 geese. Now, 5 weeks later, we have added 2 BO pullets, 2 Ameracana roos, 4 turkeys, and 18 plus 21 guineas. On top of that we have 36 guinea eggs and 7 black copper Maran eggs in the incubator. We didn't have a coop at first so used a stock trailer but we now have a decent coop and we're trying to get the yard finished, this rain is making things a little difficult. All of our fowl are housed together and everyone seems to get along. I do plan to build the duck and geese a separate pen when the rain lets up. My goal is to get a breeder trio of Pilgrim geese, had them back in the 80's, loved them and want to do it all over again.
Welcome

Nice array of birds

I don't know that she is still running a fever... Her feathers have grown back in, and she seems to be doing better, but I'm not convinced that she's feeling back to 100%. Can you tell me how I tell if she's still got a fever? The incident with her in the pool was about a month ago. Is it possible to still be running a fever?

One reason that I'm not convinced that she's feeling better is that I think she's stopped laying eggs. I have two khaki campbells, of which she is one. They had been the only birds laying eggs. I had been getting 2 eggs per day from them until just recently, when I started getting only one egg per day. I'm assuming it's her that's stopped laying, though I really have no way to tell for sure.

I am open for suggestions so if you have any thoughts/ideas on what the best route to take with this particular duck is, please share!

I have found a sure-fire method of breaking broodies though. Really think this is the one. Install a snake in your coop!

Question, is anybody else not get many eggs from they're layers or is it just me? I just switched to FF , then there was the heat, got a couple of new birds, is it time for molting the new Sebbie and the Chinese goose are in a molt . We've gone thru the usual hiding spots and can't find any thing. Any ideas?....

I'm barely getting any eggs lately; 0-2 a day from 10 layers. I think they're molting because they're starting to look pretty ragged and I'm seeing a lot of feathers around.

Geranium essential oil works wonders for tic prevention my dog (xlarge wolf-malamute) used to get ticks every time we went to the park then i started putting straight about 5 drops total geranium essentil oil and rubbed it all over his fur legs ears every where throughly now we never get tics! I work in aromatherapy so for sure you want to get a good quality essential oil most low cost ones are readily adultarated with other things the best theraputic brand is by far auria cacia avaliable at most health food stores a good second choice is camdengrey its online at camdengreyessentialoils.com they are reasonable for the excellent quality they also cary neem oil that is a cold preesed so it is also supposed to work as an organic bug repellent.. also if you were going to make the mix stated it would go bad rather quickly with out the addition of vitamin e oil to lengthen the shelf life of the almond oil..

I'll tell my SIL about the geranium EO for ticks; she has two dogs and plenty of ticks at her place. If I keep the bug repellent mixture in the fridge, will that keep it from going bad so quickly?

So sorry about my long hiatus. Been spending so much time trying to help an old ex in rehab (his choice to go, I am just there to support him though the hard withdrawls and finding new hobbies to fill his time) that my BYC time had been cut short.

I hope your being back means your ex is doing well with rehab. That's a nice thing for you to do.

Welcome!

So I know its not chickens or birds, butI have 6 black swallowtail chrysalis in my house and just had a butterfly emerge about a hour ago! What rainy weather for that to happen in!

One of the caterpillars escaped the tank and attached himself to the side of our couch! oops!

That's cool, especially how you ended up with one on the couch. At least it's temporary!

I can't believe the weather here. It rained all night and all day. Not that I'm complaining, but wow!

Well had an inteesting weekend in oklahoma are you saying danz put the lye on dry on the dirt in the barn then soak with water ? I have lots of lye as i buy it by the 50#bag for soap what exactly is oxine? And ive been studying blue egg genetics and i also woild like to create a high production blue layer mabye we could work on that together i have some thoughts on that.. Wewont close on the house till sep so if your ok keeping them a while longer that would be helpfull (roos) i can bring you some wheat after the 5 im out of town next weekend too im supposed to meet with my brother when i get back and get wheat at least it would help feed my little roos once we get moved i will take some guennys from you and mabye a pea chic trio as the ticks are pretty bad and every thing ive read says they are great for that. Between the two of them they lay an egg every other day (legbars)

CHERWIL , thanks glad to hear its not just me. I do think they are starting to molt too. I've only had those girls for a little more than a year and being a newbie to all this I really don't know what normal is . Truth is every little sniffle and dog fart I hear and I have to go check the Internet to see if its "normal". ; )
LIZZY or DANZ,could that ducks foot be soaked in oxine ? I saw that a lot of horseshoers use it for white line disease and thrush. I don't know , it is bothersome to have to order it if you need something right away. I got mine in two days.

Lizzy, I have a hen with bumblefoot. Hawkeye came over several months ago now and we did the surgery on her. Hawkeye is pretty confident she got every bit of the infection out of the foot but the swelling remains even now (never really went down post surgery), and the hen still limps. She seems happy enough and is still laying (or at least she was until she went broody and the snake last week scared her off brooding but I don't think she's back to laying since then). In fact, when I take out treats, she's out there in front of the everyone, making sure she gets her fair share. So, despite the pretty pronounced limp, I decided I'm not going to put her through another surgery and if she starts to decline I will cull her.

This is my second experience with bumblefoot surgery. The first was last summer and I operated on the same hen several times but it never really got better, even though I always got out everything I could find. That is why I wanted Hawkeye to help with this bird, in case there was something I was missing.

I think perhaps bumblefoot is one of those things that is exceptionally hard to completely eradicate once they have it. I have several other birds that if I look at the bottom of their foot they have a bumble but there is no swelling or limping, they eat well and lay regularly, so I decided I'm not going to mess with those if they're not having issues.

No you want to keep essential oils away from extreem heat or cold you can keep it in a dark place what is going to go bad in the mix is the almond oil essential oils are not going to go bad as long as you keep them out of extreem temps and light what you can do is reduce the whole recipeand use exactly 25% of every thing listed that should make it where you use it faster than it goes bad i have a tea sppon to drop converter if you need the equevelents .. Essential oils are super extreemly concentrated some times hundreds of pounds of plant material to make a small bottle of oil that is why they are pricy thats also why you can use just a few drops for it to be effective
