Consolidated Kansas

Thanks, I appreciate it. I will am happy to pay that amount if it means I will be allowed to keep our girls, I just find it a bit annoying since I have paid over $400 to get my children enrolled in public school (that did include some lunch money, gym uniform, yearbook, parking pass) but still public school is expensive, LOL! There is no guarantee we will be allowed to keep them and that is what upsets me. I am sorry maidenwolfx80, Any disease sucks, and with autoimmune diseases they are just sneaky. I live in Olathe, Kansas and I have always loved it but recently the city has done some things I haven't been thrilled about. I was thinking today, how can it be illegal for me to have hens but my neighbors can be allowed to gather with his friends on the back porch and smoke cigars? Second hand smoke is proven to kill, I always have to come in because having MS or NMO, whichever one I have it is not something something you should be around it can cause me to have other problems. Now, don't get me wrong I have nothing against smokers, My neighbors directly across the road know me well and when I come over they put their cigarettes out because they actually know what is going on in my life, and they love me. The two neighbors I have behind me have lived beside one another for 8 years and no one ever says a word. I have tried but it hasn't worked.

Okay, my computer just sent that LOL. You will be amazed how smart and sweet chickens are. They really do become part of your family quickly. As far as autoimmune diseases go they are very painful, but the quote "you never know how strong you are, until strong is the only choice you have." that is the truth. I have to laugh because two year ago I was praying I didn't have MS, and now I am praying I do ;) Thanks again for your kind words.

Oh, I also wanted to tell you, good luck with your meds. I tried several before trying Tysabri. I don't know if you have ever heard of it, but it can cause PML a rare brain disease that basically kills you. I was so scared the first time I had my infusion now I call it my spa day because I know I am going to feel a little bit better from it. So don't get discouraged if you have to switch meds around you will eventually find one that works best for you.

PIKEMAN94 , welcome back good to see you!

Zigzag , I'm no chicken professor but, I think most chickens really fly like that while they are young and before they get heavy ( unless their one of those breeds that really do fly well ) You would probably only have to clip their wings once . If they are safe in your yard and locked up at night, clipping their wings would keep them from flying into an unsafe yard.

CHERWILL, I'm with you I wish it could be October and November all year. Cooking and yard work and the kids in school,
celebrate.gif
and bonfires with hot drinks and no bugs ahhhhhh ........

MAIDENWOLF, I wish I knew more about bumble foot too ,or staph for that matter. My son is a child with special needs and has had a lot of health issues and he gets it every so often. SO frustrating!
I feel like its always a struggle to get his immune system going so I can keep him from having to take antibiotics, and then something happens where I don't have any choice and haveto do antibiotics anyway and then I have to deal with yeast and start all over with the probiotics and all the other supplements that he takes and it just never ends .
I have a hen out there that has a small one on each foot I don't know how long she's had it cuz I haven't had her that long . She isn't lame and is laying well so, I'm not sure what to do. I wish there was a way to just inject the bumble with something that would zap it and take care of it.
It is frustrating and I understand the immune system thing. I have lupus and I am so worried about my kids bringing something home this school year. With the immune suppressers I am on it would be devastating. I wonder if there is something I can take to prepare myself for it. I used to take immune system builders every flu season but I cant do that anymore.
Kimberlydm, First you need to get a copy of the ordinance and read exactly what it says. Then let us know if letters or emails (if you can provide an email address for the city manager, city council, or person who would be in charge of this.) can help your cause.
Chickens are wonderful therapy. The whole point is to not to give up. See if a friend or someone who lives outside the city limits could possibly take them for a short while while you settle the problem or get a permit. Did you happen to get the name of whom you talked to when you called the first time?
So many of us have physical issues that cause ongoing pain. I know it seems hopeless and I can't imagine loosing my eyesight. My Dad has fought a myelitis for several years which is very similar but is a brain infection. He has to be on steroids all the time. They do SED rate tests on him to raise or lower the amount of steroids. He went from totally invalid to doing well after he got on the right medication. Unfortunately now he has other health issues which are far worse. The point is that with the right medications you will be amazed at how much better you do.
Pikeman good to see you back on here. I thought maybe you had forgotten us. Glad to hear the Marans is laying well. I don't have any at all any more.
Maidenwolf do you have stickers of some kind in your yard? They can contribute to bubble foot. I worry about my chickens getting a foot rot or something in all this water. You can't escape it.
It rained here all day yesterday. It was supposed to clear out by noon. It wasn't necessarily a rain after noon or so but it sprinkled and was cloudy all day.
I spent the entire day cleaning and cooking. I was still mopping at 10PM last night. Of course now I have new messes to clean up this morning before my company gets here. It will be an atrocious mess before the day is over cause there is no dry spots to walk outside.
My brother and his wife are coming from N. Carolina to visit my Dad before he passes away. They will be here for several days which means after my children's families visit today I need to get it cleaned up again for my brother.
I honestly can't imagine having to clean every day. I would so much rather be out taking care of the birds.
I got DH to go get feed for me, but I still had to go to town to take eggs in, pick up some scripts and make a short visit with my Dad.
I honestly haven't noticed mosquitoes for about 3 years. First the drought had them under control. I have noticed wigglers in any sitting water but I try to dump it all. I always dump and renew all the water for the birds every day so that helps as well. I think the birds do a good job of keeping the population down. However with all the rain there is water sitting all around us and I'm afraid it won't last.
I do have lots of thistle and other pokies that grow out here. I cant eliminate it I have tried. It is just very rampant in this area.
Bumblefoot and other foot issues:

I am spraying everyone's feet with Vetericyn at bedtime. I don't know if it will help, but I am convinced that it cured bumblefoot on a couple of chickens 2 years ago.

Speaking of Vetericyn, I have a kitten with a problem with her foot. When we found her on a straw bale in the chicken run, she was walking on the side of her leg. After a week with a splint, she started walking on the pad. Then a few days later, she started walking on the side of the foot again. I examined it and it was hot and swollen, so back to the vet for antibiotics. Better for a while, then started favoring the foot again. On Wednesday it was swollen again, so I sprayed it with Vetericyn (the gel stuff for wounds). The next morning it was waay different. It had lost the swelling but looked red and sore. I hit it with some triple antibiotic cream (she flinched, so it hurt), and the Vetericyn a couple of times through the day. Apparently there was some sort of abscess that drained. It appears to be healing, but there is a sizable concave spot on the pad of her foot. I'm really hoping we can get this under control. It has been one problem after another with that foot. She is a very personable kitten and has ingratiated herself with all 4 of our dogs and our grouchy older cat, so of course she is part of the family.

The stuff isn't cheap, but it seems to work with lots of problems.

I love that stuff it is worth the money

I have autoimmune problems as well. I have had a lot of testing over the years & besides Osteoarthritis which is bad in my knees & hands my Rheumatologist thinks I have another condition he can't pinpoint. It's been elusive, but he says often they can't diagnose something unfortunately until you have something serious come up. I have a lot of inflammation in my body, it shows up on the tests, but the rest is inconclusive as of yet. At first it was thought I have Lupus, but after the first time that has been negative, so why it was first positive who knows. I was put on the same drugs you have listed above & didn't see any improvement & in fact had side effects from the Methotrexate & had to stop taking it. Make sure you get your eyes checked often on the Hyroxychloroquine if your Dr. didn't tell you that. They have to dilate your eyes to check them.
Yes, the doctor did tell me about the eye exams and said once a year? My grandma tried Metho. and had so many mouth sores she had to stop it and just takes the Hydro. now. I work with preschool kids ages 3,4 and 5, just started back on Thursday and I worry about getting sick on this medicine.

The Vetericyn has contributed to healing the bumblefoot on a couple of my birds' feet as well. I ended up having to wrap their feet with vet wrap after spraying them, though. They wiped the Vetericyn off too quickly without the wrap. I have ducks and geese, though, rather than chickens, so that might make a difference.

I like the Vetericyn enough that Iplan on keeping it on hand now. It works great for my birds and says it's safe for other animals as well. :)

Some of you may remember that I've posted questions about a duck with a bumblefoot infection before. I am now pretty sure that we have not completely gotten rid of the infection, and that it has spread to more than just her foot. A while back, Danz had recommended an antibiotic that I could give her, but I don't remember what it was. Danz - can you tell me again, please? Does anyone else have any recommendations for an antibiotic? I don't have any way to take this bird's temperature (above the temperature range for normal thermometers), but she is the only bird panting out of my whole flock, and she spends more time sitting beside the pool than anywhere else.

What antibiotic would you suggest for a bumblefoot infection that has spread and that we've been fighting for a month or more?

Well remember what isaid about spending a quiet weekend at home? Well that was a joke 3hr road trip to romana oklahoma to introduce my brother to the aunts and grandma! On the up side i got some wheat and a promice of milo when its ready ya! and i should be able to check on the newhouse in moline on the way home to wichita monday.. ahh well mabye next weekend i will relax.....

Lizzy, You can use Baytril for the goose, about 1ml for a full sized goose. You will probably have to get this from a vet but you might be able to order it on line. I use the injection kind but I understand there is a pill form available as well. Give it to her for about three consecutive days. I just called a vet and talked to them and told them what I wanted it for and they sold me a partial bottle. It is pretty pricy.
My company just left and I am just totally exhausted. I only got about 6 hours sleep last night. It's been a busy week and next week will be busy as well.
I had made two fruit cobblers from fruit from my now dead fruit trees. ( They died in the drought.) One peach cobbler and one cherry cobbler. They went over beautifully and I made the cake type dumplings from scratch with a recipe I invented as I went along. It turned out perfectly. I love it when things come together. They took lots of it with them. But I know what I've having for desert tonight!
I still need to go feed the birds but I have to rest a little bit. I swear it wears me out worse to sit around and entertain by far than it does to physically work all day outside.
