That's good to know! I put one of what I believe to be a girl back with the hurt rooster to see if she would bother him and he actually started pecking her on her neck and she would crouch down on the ground after "screaming"..was he trying to show her that he is in charge still? They're actually pretty self-sufficient. I am home most of the time, but I don't worry much when I'm not. Being in town, I don't even worry much about predators, though my niece had a duck taken by a fox earlier this year. They can also take quite a bit of picking on, so the chicken would probably be alive even if you were gone for the day. You're not being silly, but there are sometimes losses we can't prevent and you shouldn't beat yourself up over that if it happens.
Scary stuff. I hadn't heard about the higher incidence of rabies this year. I am rather concerned about the safety of my horses... Hopefully, a couple more days won't hurt anything....
Lizzy I have to agree with you. I had heard earlier there were more reported cases of rabies in Kansas this year than previous years. And one lone animal with rabies just doesn't happen. It's not like it is something they just catch. They either have to be bitten by a rabid animal or in a skunk's case can be born with rabies from a rabid mother.
I typed up all the replies and then poof... it went to the black hole. Argh.....![]()
I know what you mean...this happens to me ALL the time!!!![]()
My 2 broody hens are no good. They break eggs left and right. I found yucky mess in their nest boxes! Don't know if the rest of the eggs are contaminated or not. If it is not because the storage room is hot, I would have moved them to it. They take up 2 of my nest boxes!! I will let them sit for now unless the eggs start smelling. In that case, I'll just toss them. If not, they can sit on them for another week and some days. If they don't hatch, I'll toss them then.
Don't be too quick to toss those other eggs. We lost several eggs that got smashed (we think the other hens sat on top of the 2 broodies that were sharing one nesting box instead of using the other 3 boxes). I just cleaned the smashed egg mess when the broodies got up to eat/drink. They hatched out 2 of the 8. The chicks are almost 2 months old and the "main" momma is still teaching them. They even sleep in the nest box still even though the babies will jump up to the highest roosts to play.
oh yeah it was yucky out today..whats the best way to keep chicks cool (almost 6 weeks) or just chickens in general?Ugh it was hot today, the hens were suffering & it was just miserable out, I wish it would cool off again. We don't need a bunch of rain again, but I sure enjoyed the cooler weather. I can't wait for it to cool off again so I don't have to be soaking wet when I come in from doing chores, I just hate that. I was going to put the old fan in the coop again for the hens, but it evidently got too much chicken dust in the motor & it quit on me. Let's all think COOL thoughts!
