Consolidated Kansas

They're actually pretty self-sufficient. I am home most of the time, but I don't worry much when I'm not. Being in town, I don't even worry much about predators, though my niece had a duck taken by a fox earlier this year. They can also take quite a bit of picking on, so the chicken would probably be alive even if you were gone for the day. You're not being silly, but there are sometimes losses we can't prevent and you shouldn't beat yourself up over that if it happens.
That's good to know! I put one of what I believe to be a girl back with the hurt rooster to see if she would bother him and he actually started pecking her on her neck and she would crouch down on the ground after "screaming"..was he trying to show her that he is in charge still?

Well I lost all my multi's so I guess I'll just wing it.
I know that Valley Vet sells rabies vaccine but they only ship it out of state. Even though they are based in Kansas they can sell it to other states but not to Kansans. I had called them about it some time ago.
Lizzy I have to agree with you. I had heard earlier there were more reported cases of rabies in Kansas this year than previous years. And one lone animal with rabies just doesn't happen. It's not like it is something they just catch. They either have to be bitten by a rabid animal or in a skunk's case can be born with rabies from a rabid mother.
AshnCarson be very careful buying from the Yoder auction. I have heard some terrible stories about some of the birds sold there. I can't say if the tales are true or not, but if you do buy something be sure to quarantine it for at least 2-3 weeks before letting it in your flock. Of course that is standard good sense when you bring any bird in.
I have been out building and taking down and putting up fence panels etc. I put up a new roost for some peafowl and some pheasants. Their old roost had fallen down. I have the pen ready for the new dog as well. I sure hope she take to us again quickly.
I want to get done with dividing the pen so I can move the white Orpingtons before morning. I have to get the wire hung on the divider I built as well as on the gate. Then hang the gate.
I got the duckling pen taken loose, a new panel installed and got them all moved to fresh grass. I put the new babies out there. Sure hope they don't get trampled by the older ducklings. I still need to get a metal panel put on the new fencing panel so they can't get out.
I hung some fabric over the top of the peacock pens and got it screwed down. It is upholstery fabric and works pretty good for shade. DH hung a bedspread over the pen for the dog so she would have shade as well. I like using fabric better than tarps. It lasts longer and lets the air go through some what. I had this on hand so I didn't spend anything on it. It doesn't stop the rain but it sure gives shade.
Well I'm cooled down now so I'd better get back out and work on the projects some more.
I also got some more chicks moved to the brooder house and have some more in the hatcher that need moved since I did that.
Busy busy day!

Scary stuff. I hadn't heard about the higher incidence of rabies this year. I am rather concerned about the safety of my horses... Hopefully, a couple more days won't hurt anything...

So, I had another unpleasant surprise this evening. We had gone quite a while (a month or so??) without seeing anything long and slithery. Then, just in the last week, I've seen two bull snakes, and my husband has seen 2-3 rattle snakes on the road. One of the bull snakes was in the yard today, not far from my duck pen. My husband chased him away, and I'll keep a close eye out for him. He won't last much longer if he gets close to my bird pen again... I was rather enjoying my time of not seeing snakes....

I typed up all the replies and then poof... it went to the black hole. Argh.....

I know what you mean...this happens to me ALL the time!!!

My 2 broody hens are no good. They break eggs left and right. I found yucky mess in their nest boxes! Don't know if the rest of the eggs are contaminated or not. If it is not because the storage room is hot, I would have moved them to it. They take up 2 of my nest boxes!! I will let them sit for now unless the eggs start smelling. In that case, I'll just toss them. If not, they can sit on them for another week and some days. If they don't hatch, I'll toss them then.

Don't be too quick to toss those other eggs. We lost several eggs that got smashed (we think the other hens sat on top of the 2 broodies that were sharing one nesting box instead of using the other 3 boxes). I just cleaned the smashed egg mess when the broodies got up to eat/drink. They hatched out 2 of the 8. The chicks are almost 2 months old and the "main" momma is still teaching them. They even sleep in the nest box still even though the babies will jump up to the highest roosts to play.

Ugh it was hot today, the hens were suffering & it was just miserable out, I wish it would cool off again. We don't need a bunch of rain again, but I sure enjoyed the cooler weather. I can't wait for it to cool off again so I don't have to be soaking wet when I come in from doing chores, I just hate that. I was going to put the old fan in the coop again for the hens, but it evidently got too much chicken dust in the motor & it quit on me. Let's all think COOL thoughts!

oh yeah it was yucky out today..whats the best way to keep chicks cool (almost 6 weeks) or just chickens in general?

My teenage cockerels are sleeping on the top roost tonight (after a certain amount of pecking and muttering from the girls). Last night they tried to sleep on top of the hanging feeder -- I relocated them to the low roost after the light went out. The night before they chose the lower roost. They are hanging together and not mingling with the girls much, but they are quite a bit smaller than the hens at this point. They are only 8 weeks old, but they seem to be holding their own and keeping out of reach of the girls.

My head hen has been really nice to them, and the first night she came out of the coop and herded them in before the door closed. I was amazed. She hasn't picked on them at all.

misters and shade

edited to add:
I just realized how abrupt that sounded. I used shade cloth over a corner of the run and I have a mister set up so that it sprays some of the water on the shade cloth. It acts like one of the old swamp coolers and the whole corner of the pen is 10 degrees cooler' I'll post a picture when it gets light out.
