I gave my rooster amoxycillin liquid orally using a small syringe (no needle) that the vet gave me. I tucked him under my left arm (I'm right handed) and put the tip of the syringe at the corner of his mouth. He cooperated for the most part and after a couple of treatments, he didn't give me a hard time with it. The trick is to aim the syringe so that the liquid is headed down his throat not onto his tongue (do they have tongues?) I don't know if that would work with a goose or not. I don't think the injectable is the same stuff is it? This was that awful pink stuff they give little kids for strep.

Good luck with the meds. Poultry is even worse than kids when it comes to giving meds.

Sharol I know what you are talking about and that would have been a better option but Lizzy got pills. I've been giving some pills to chickens and it's just a matter of pushing them back into the throat area. I'd much rather give shots myself. I really like things that go into the water but with geese and ducks it's really hard to get water into them without them swimming in it or spilling it.
Lizzy I can tell you feel guilty about leaving, but your husband will do fine. Do you use front line on your dog? I've found that helps reduce the number of flies that get on them but of course won't keep them all off. I'd spray the wounds on your dog with the blue kote to keep the flies off the sores. Not sure it will help but it might be a start. I also ran into a guy recently that bought a bunch of Avon Skin so Soft and was putting it on his horses to keep flies off of them. I figure if it would work for horses it should work for dogs. You would have a stinky dog but it might work. I know you are short on time so maybe just a spray of some bug repellent spray would help. Just an idea.
If you are getting rid of the fish why don't you advertise the tank for sale and give the fish free with it? It's hard to let go of aquariums I know because I have several around here myself but if you aren't going to use it that's an option. Just tell them they can do what they want with the fish.

I may have to try force-feeding the pill to my gander.  That might work better than trying to force-feed the medicated water.  I made a bit of a mess with it this evening.  Either way, I've GOT to find something that my DH is willing to do.  He dislikes this particular bird anyway (NOISY bird, and he doesn't like the noise), and so that doesn't help my case much.  All I can say is that it's a good thing he loves me because otherwise I'd never talk him into doing half the stuff I do.  :)

Giving shots sounds like a good idea to me...  However, that is still VERY difficult to do without help.  My trip sure has managed to be at a bad time.  I'm looking forward to it, but I really hate to leave when I feel like things are falling apart around here.  This heat sure hasn't helped much.  In addition to the two birds with bumblefoot, I've got a dog with sores caused by flies so I'm trying to find a way to get rid of the flies that won't affect the birds (he goes for swims in their pool, which they also drink out of), and a horse with what originally looked like a bit of an eye infection, though he is looking better.  plus, I've got 3 fish that I really need to try to give away/sell because they are the only fish in a 55 gallon tank, and I am trying really hard to cut down on my responsibilities before Baby comes...  So far, no local interest on the fish.  I've never shipped fish before and really don't want to try...  GRRR!

Ok well what i was trying to say is take 5 drops of lavender essential oil and rub well all over your dog other oils that work to keep tic flies and fleas off and away from your dogs are
Lavender (true)essential oil - around 10 a 1/2 oz bottle retail
Basil essential oil -well under 10 mabye 5-7 retail
Geranium essential oil -14-20 retail
So it really depends my dogs hate the florals (lav &geranium) so ive been using basil with the same sucess

Also we keep 2 fly traps going and dump them every 2 weeks and i just got some fly spray at mitchells ( i was having trouble keeping flies commi g in my back door) you spray it on your wood surfaces away from animals and when the flies touch it they die its helped considerably although all the way from my back porch to the chicken pen looks like a fly grave yard he said to reapply spray every two weeks
Its called quick bayte not for use on animals or in the pen i put it just outside and high enough the dogs wont touch it and it helps alot with cutting down total flY population

Oops. Missed that part.

Sharol I know what you are talking about and that would have been a better option but Lizzy got pills.

These are the 3 chicks that Marlena hatched. They will be 6 weeks old on Monday.

I can't seem to get a good picture of them, but I think the one furtherest away from me is a cockerel. He is beginning to had reddish wattles and comb while the other two are still small and have little color. The full sized picture is a little better (but not much). My daughter is going to help me catch them and take individual pics later today I hope. I can't catch them by myself to look at feathers yet, but I'm getting closer with egg yolk treats.

I should have added essential oils are avaliable at any local health food store or online a good trusted brand is aura cacia dont be fooled by inferrior brands (now) you get what you pay for....and at 5 dropps per application a half oz bottle of aura cacia will last along time... By comparison if you bought the now brand which they cut and use other e-oils than what they say it would take 2-3 times as much to be effective

About essential oils,, not all essential oils from NOW are cut. The ones that are cut will say on the bottle. NOW is a decent brand, mountain rose herbs has great products.

Again for general smell and scenting things now and mountian rose would be fine if you want theraputic quality that you dont have to use 3 times as much to begin to compare auria cacia is the better choice after 18 years of doing aromatherapy i have yet to find a brand with as high a quality i keep looking though im alway tring new brands to compare....

OK, better pictures of the 6 chicks that are almost 6 weeks old:

Marlena's babies:
Chick 1 -- pretty sure he is a roo. Redding up in the wattles and comb at 6 weeks.

this is chick 3 actually. She has a dark comb, but looks pretty girly to me. The other pictures of her were out of focus, so this is the best I can do for now.

This is chick 2. I'm hoping pullet. No comb development yet.

These are the chicks in the hoop that were incubator raised:
The first is Raven. She is black with white on her breast. Pretty sure she is a girl. The second picture shows her color better. I'm not sure what the white lacing indicates? Danz?

This is Chickzilla. All boy, I think. 1/3 bigger than his hatchmates.

Tried to get a picture of a feather. Not a clear success. Enlarge it for a better look (Please ignore the damaged finger (didn't use rubber gloves while canning and I'm peeling).

Copper is the chick at the back. Hoping for a girl. Chickzilla at the front. I think dad was a BO for both.

Comments on gender? Anyone? Anyone? Beuhler? Beuhler?

I was trying to see feathers on each of the birds. Not sure I can make them out but will try to give opinions.

Can't see his feathers good enough to tell.

This is chick 2. I'm hoping pullet. No comb development yet. I agree. Looks like nice square ends on the neck feathers

I'm not sure but she sure is pretty. It almost looks partridge. I am guessing at this point looking at her comb her daddy was a cream legbar. The other option would be a light brahma but I think she would have more of a walnut comb if that was the case. If this is a female she should be a dark olive egg layer. How is she on size. Is she slightly smaller than some of the others? Or larger?

I agree that chickzilla is a boy! I gotta say I love those colors. Not sure about copper. I did have a blue gold laced brahma out there that could be Copper's father as well if she is showing a lot more foot feathering than the others. If not I'd say her daddy is also the orpington boy.
Very nice birds Sharol. I think you got a decent share of females in there.
