Mamau- if you can I would try to keep her in the ac for a day or two ( I'm not a huge fan of house chickens but in the laundry room in a dog crate or similar is tolerable ). I lost two young ones earlier this summer when I put them back out without giving them enough recovery time in the ac.
Lizzy- your DH gets husband points for organizing , cool beans.
Danz- are you still coming up for the sale in Gardner? And if so what kind of birds are you bringing ?

Oh, and Sharol- I have a pulet that we got from Danz that looks like Chickzilla's twin sister. She was broody raised and I can't remember what kind of cross Danz said she thought she was. I'll snap a pic tomorrow and post it . I like the one with the white trim on her chest feathers , she's pretty.

Yes, the eggs came from her.. Zilla's Mom was a Marans and dad was probably a Buff Orpington according to Danz. I got some mixed eggs from her (all marans, but unknown father). Of the ones that hatched, it looks like 3 are pure Marans. She says the one with the white on her breast (notice the optimism of the "her") may have had a Cream Legbar daddy. If "she" did and "she" lays, I may get olive eggs. Cool. It will be interesting to see how her feathering turns out as an adult. I never cease to be amazed at how the feather colors evolve during the first 6 months or so.

22qzoo. Your broody raised chicks came from a different batch. I think yours was probably from a cochin and ??. I honestly can't remember what all was in that area then.
Yes I am coming to Gardner. Wouldn't miss it. I really need a sellers market this year.I have lots to take if I ever get started building cages. And then figuring how to get all the birds loaded. I do hope the weather is just slightly cool and not rainy. If I get things done I plan to take some Lady Amhurst pheasants and some red goldens. Getting out of the pheasants other than one trio of red goldens I think. I have a couple of peacocks I need to sell just to make room. Hate to let any of them go!! I have some sabastopol geese to sell. I need to move some of my extras. I also have several pairs of Mandarin ducks I have to sell. Assuming I can catch them. I hate to do it. I am afraid of splitting up pairs but I have too many and really need the $$$. I should sell some guineas, some chickens, and some turkey. But I am trying to get my breeding groups figured out and not sure I am ready to sell many. I may sell one pair of partridge brahmas. I will probably loose money cause they cost me a fortune. But I need to reduce a few males. I am sure I have tons that could go if I really wanted to let them go. I may sell some of the barred rocks. Not sure yet. Most of what I have to sell are still too young to see their excellent quality. I imagine next spring is when I'll have more chickens. I should have some grown breeder pairs then that could make me some $$. If you want anything be sure let me know. I have chicks that I would sell but chicks are kind of a waste of time there.
I am going to try very hard to resist buying anything. Other than I want to buy some fencing to build a large pen for my Sabastopols. I bought a ton of 5 foot wire in the spring and I should have bought 4 foot. So I hope there is some 4 foot and it sells cheap. I honestly would like them to have their own big section of the yard to roam in. I have this years birds just free ranging but need to get them penned so I don't have eggs laid all over next spring. I can't afford to buy the wire at normal price.
Well we had a very brief period of wind and cool come through minutes ago. The wind is gone but it was feeling pretty good. I went out to let the birds out so they could enjoy it. I though it might rain but not yet. It is thundering. We really need rain. It would be nice to work outside with it being cooler if it weren't raining but the garden is screaming.
I couldn't get much done yesterday. The heat and humidity was killer. Even close to dark I was out putting out some feed and drenched in sweat. I moved all the young guineas to one pen yesterday. I just wanted to get them out of the brooder. If there were some grass in there I would have moved the turkey poults there. At least it is something temporary anyway to get a few of them out of there. It's so crowded and I am lacking pens and housing.

Got a very unexpected surprise this morning... My DH was helping me change the wrapping on my duck's foot (the one I've been battling bumblefoot on). Just as he was unwrapping, I heard a loud "crack". I was scared that my DH had somehow managed to break a bone in the bird's foot. Fearing the worst, I asked "what was that?". His response: "an egg". I have been getting one egg about every other day, and I was sure that the egg was coming from the OTHER khaki campbell. However, the little incident this morning proved me wrong. This bird has been on and off antibiotics for a couple of weeks now. Should we be eating the eggs?

I do not know for sure that the other khaki is not also laying, but knowing that the injured bird is laying at least ocassionally has me doubting about the usability of our eggs. I cannot tell, just from the eggs, which bird laid them, and I keep them all together at night, so there's no way to tell. Thoughts?

Congrats on the egg but DO NOT eat it. You need at least a couple weeks withdrawal from meds. And if you are allergic to any of the meds the duck has been given give it at least three weeks. Scramble it for the birds or your dog to eat to be safe.

This is Chickzilla. All boy, I think. 1/3 bigger than his hatchmates. Tried to get a picture of a feather. Not a clear success. Enlarge it for a better look (Please ignore the damaged finger (didn't use rubber gloves while canning and I'm peeling). Copper is the chick at the back. Hoping for a girl. Chickzilla at the front. I think dad was a BO for both. Comments on gender? Anyone? Anyone? Beuhler? Beuhler? Sharol and Danz - here's chickzilla's twin , any thoughts on parentage ? Any chance she would lay olive eggs ?
