Consolidated Kansas

ChickenDanz so sorry about your peahen, hopefully your other one can take her place.
Sharol those are beautiful EEs, I agree that Jake is quite stunning, I bet he really shines in the sun.
We (DH mainly) worked on our new chicken house addition today, the weather was nice, not too hot and just a little windy. We ended up only getting about 4/10 inch of rain, could use more. Still have honey we need to get pulled, but we have to make room for the new birds also.
Took some pictures today just know you all are excited to see them. :)

That third one from the bottom is an Easter Egger, not an Ameraucana & if it was sold to you as such they lied. Ameraucanas only come in certain approved colors & that isn't one of them. It looks a lot like the hen I have only mine has more lacing. Your Blue Laced Red Wyandottes look just like the little pullet I have too. Are yours cream with red lacing? It seems like some of the hens come out like that instead of having any blue on them. I ordered eggs & this is the only one I have left that made it from them. She is a really nice little pullet, she is the only one I can go up to & just pick up & carry around.

These are Elwood and Jake, my 11 week old EE boys from Butch:

Jake has lovely coloring so far. I can hardly wait to see how he matures. His tail is already iridescent.

They are sure getting big Sharol. That is hard to believe. It doesn't seem that long ago you were hatching them.

I guess I will have to hope I throw another pretty purple next year. I hate waiting a year at a time and then a couple more years for chicks.

This is our swimming pool brooder That's a good idea to use a second one as a top. I've never seen that done before.

This is my Ameracana sold as a cockerel -opinions? Of course I don't know what age it is but I would guess hen by the body shape.

My Gardner purchase, BO's and Blue Laced Red Wyandottes. Those buffs are outstanding. Same lines as some of mine. Good thing I wasn't paying attention. I might have bid on them. Not that I really needed more. I just love the monster birds.

I noticed that Eileens blue laced reds are some of both. I think with a little selective breeding you could probably keep the blue more prominant. I understand approved colors for showing Trish but what if someone mixed two of the approved colors and ended up with a mix. Wouldn't it still be an Ameraucana? Just asking. I.E. I have several colors of brahmas but if i let them cross over colors they are still brahmas..... just not a recognized color that you could show. I'm just curious.
I'm just curious.
Speaking of blue egg laying species I finally switched out roosters yesterday for the Araucana girls. I had two months of non- fertile eggs. I decided to try the youngest legbar cockerel to see if he would breed the girls. Last night he just acted freaked out cause he wanted to go sleep in his normal night time pen.
I got some more chicks moved to the brooder house and got what was in there divided into a couple of groups...not that they will stay devided ..the older ones like to fly to the other side. I have another large group that hatched during the night.
I have had a sussex in a quarantine cage for some time because it had a cold. I decided to try to put it back in the pen with the other birds it had been with previously. Well it has gotten so used to the one on one care that it has become a lap chicken. It runs to the gate when it sees me and lets me pet it. I will have to watch it carefully to make sure it stays well. Moving it might stress it. I was pretty sure it was a cockerel but now I am thinking it may be a hen. These iffy birds drive me nuts. Some show their sexes so early and some just kind of stay on the fence.
I had one of my English splash girls acting very sick. I brought her in and she won't eat and drink. I did get her to drink when I gave her water with a dropper. While ago she went to the bathroom .....I think. I am confused. It looked a lot like egg but didn't smell like egg or poo either one. I think she is probably close to point of lay but no one in that group has started laying yet. She doesn't appear to have a cold but was gasping a little this morning. I am so afraid of loosing her. She is a gorgeous bird. I gave her some penicillin even though she has no muscle left to give it in. She is so skinny. I have no idea how long it has been since she ate. I think she may have egg peratinitis which isn't good at all.
I only have one other splash who is my "house chicken" cause she sneezes all the time and none of the meds have phased it. Otherwise she acts healthy and eats well. She had gotten stuck down in the mud a couple months ago during a big rain storm and started sneezing afterward. I told DH she just does that to stay in the house. I hate it when something is wrong and I'm not sure why. And then how on earth to treat it. I just hope the shot works. I may switch to baytril if she doesn't improve quickly.
I had a couple more ducks hatch yesterday. Lots of the eggs weren't any good. Probably too much heat when they were laid. I have a few more to hatch later on. I pulled all the non-developing eggs out of the incubator so most of the others should hatch.
I also had the last two peachick eggs hatch. I had one normal India blue chick and another pure white one. The last pure white one I had from them gets more and more color all the time and isn't white now at all. It looks like it got splattered with white paint. I should keep a photo record on this one since I didn't on the last one. So that is the end of peafowl eggs for the year. I can relax until next spring....other than keeping these guys alive.
I can't believe it is Wednesday already. This week is going way to fast. I've got tons to do and it's supposed to be really hot today.

Danz, according to the Ameraucana standards if a bird isn't one of the recognized colors it's an EE, no ifs ands or buts about it. If you ask anybody in the Ameraucana Breeder's Club they will tell you the same thing & they are all very touchy about it. All of the project colors that people are working on are also that unless & until they're finally recognized by the APA. They just leave no room for any variations. There are beautiful birds that are classified EEs, there is no doubt about that. I have two of them myself, one of which is a special bird because I have had her so long. She is a variation of the Silver. I also have a blue that is gorgeous that I got this spring & she now is close to laying age. She is blue with red lacing. The silver one lays pretty green eggs that my egg customers really like.

I'm really sorry about your sick chickens, I hate it when they get sick, you feel so helpless sometimes because no matter what you do you can't always save them. I think some of the bacteria is getting resistant to the meds we have & I also think some things are viruses & the antibiotics won't touch them.

Congrats on the peachicks, that's strange about the white one being spotted like that. I'd be interested to know if the last one stays white. I really think the white ones are beautiful, I just don't have pen room for all the colors I would like to have.

I don't think this is a bacteria issue with this pullet. I think she just had a malfunction with her egg making machine and became septic. I am pretty sure I am going to loose her. She won't eat or drink and is having trouble standing. I just caught her too late I guess. Makes me sad...not to mention she was a very expensive bird. I tried to give her some chick saver and some treats but that hasn't helped any. It's particularly upsetting to know I have raised her this long and she is just at point of lay now.
I tried to take a picture of this little white peachick but my Adobe is messed up and I can't get it straightened out. I have a heat lamp on so the lighting was all wrong. I might try again later. The adobe help site is down so I can't get my question answered about how to fix it.
Dang it.
Well that is a shame about the Ameraucanas. I don't understand why people close their minds to diversity. That is how we end up with all the terrific new and different colors of birds. I know for showing there needs to be standards but for breeds I don't get it.
I love the white peafowl and especially after the price my 18 month old peacock just brought last weekend. My daughter sent me this picture quite some time ago after I hatched my first white. To me this is the ultimate of total beauty.

I just think they are so regal. The first time I saw a totally pure white peacock was in Puerto Rico at the hotel we stayed at the night before we left for a cruise. They had all colors of peafowl running around loose on the grounds of the hotel & we just walked among them. They were so beautiful & that's when I decided I wanted some.

Ahhh... I didn't think to have 2 swimming pools to make a complete brooder with top. Now that Fall is almost here, the kiddie pools are on sale so I may need to think about grabbing a couple of them.

Wow... this is stunningly beautiful! Don't think I will ever get tired of looking at it.

Josie - It is definitely hard without anyone around to help out. I have no family around here either. They are over 10,000+ miles away. We raised the kids here alone but some how made it work. Definitely not easy by any means.

Danz - So sorry you are having more bird problem. It is just heart breaking to know that after raising them to the point of laying then they start having issues.

It is getting warm outside. I was out and about around 11ish and with the light breeze, it was OK. But by the time I got back into the office around 12:30pm, it was starting to get warm. We bought some discounted tropical plants from John Deere Landscaping over the weekend and they were all blown down by the strong wind over night. I really need to spray them down with some Dawn detergent soap then bring them inside the plant room. Supposedly after today's warm spell, it will get cooler over the next several days.

I'm busy at work getting a project wrapped up but as September turning into October, my busy tax season starts and won't be done until April. It didn't seem too long ago that I was yelling "tax season is over!!!" but now I'm going back into the season again.

Have a great day!
