Danz so sorry about your pullet, always seems to be the better ones. The tough part is the not knowing why so that you can put a stop to it. Your peafowl are beautiful, really hope we can get some (when we get the new pen done).
Since I can't spell Ameraucana it must be an EE, right? from what I have read (after I bought it), I figured it was an EE. I don't care as long as she lays a pretty egg. But, from what Trisha and Danz are saying two Ameraucanas could produce a non accepted color and it would have to be an EE?
Trish, the two blue laced red wyandottes are reddish brown/tan with a hint of blue lacing. Not as beautiful as what I thought they should be, but the price was right for laying hens. I'm willing to sell the rooster if you are interested.
Tweety we got our pools for $5.00 at the Dollar store in Emporia on our way home from Gardner. Now is definitely the time to get them.
Danz, I read your posts and they just wear me out, I can't get anything done. I used to work like that, I've gotten soft, maybe you will inspire me to get the things done I want to do. Like I said before, there's ALOT of hard working people on here, but that is how it is when you have animals.
We just finished the hatch on the FBCM eggs, sure wasn't as good as we had hoped. (What's that about counting your chickens before the hatch?). We had 4 that pipped but we had to help them out and 6 others that were fully developed but didn't pip. I guess it was my fault because I opened the windows one night and the house got chilly. DH said the Hovabator couldn't keep the temp regulated. But, we've got 20 little fuzz butts.

I have always loved the little town of Council Grove, there are a lot of historic sites there & they have a good restaurant downtown too. It's pretty in the Flint Hills anyway.

Congrats on the chicks! I have a new baby chick at my house too, only one that made it to hatch from some eggs I bought & had shipped. It's a Cream Legbar & a boy, I really was hoping for a girl, but this one does seem awfully pretty. We'll see how he feathers out. I'll be getting some more eggs later on to replace the batch that went bad. It was an awfully expensive little boy.

I just had a near miss on our first hawk attack.

All the chickens (9 adults, 2 12 week old cockerels, and 6 7-8 week olds) were in the yard. I had just kicked back for a little nap when I heard Marlena (my broody) go ballistic in the yard. By the time I got to the window, she was in a (beak to beak) standoff with an immature redtail about 10 feet from my front door. At first I thought it was my brown chicken (about the same size as Marlena or a tad smaller), and then I realized that THAT was no chicken. I yelled and by the time I got out the door, it had flown off. There were lots of tiny gray feathers around where they had been, so I suspect it had targeted one of Marlena's BCM chicks. I'll have to inspect them tonight when they go in. They are flighty, and they really don't like to be handled. There wasn't any blood on any of the feathers, so I'm hopeful that she/he (the victim) wasn't hurt. Way to go Marlena.

I've had hawks divebomb the yard before, but I've never seen one on the ground before.

I'm glad your birds are OK, that is a brave hen!

Sharol, I am so glad everyone is fine. Marlena sure is one brave mama. I had a near hawk attack over a week ago as well. That was one of the reasons I decided to have LGDs to protect the flock.

Danz, I'm sorry about your pullet.

Sorry about your pullet Danz. If you are anything like me, it doesn't matter how many birds we have, it is still upsetting to lose one especially when we don't know the cause.

Next time you are down in the Wichita area you might try the Habitat for Humanity ReStore. You never know what you'll find there but they have a lot of old building materials at reasonable prices.

Thanks guys. She was a beautiful bird. Wish I had some more like her. HeChicken do you have the street address of that place? I guess I can look it up. There is one in Topeka but it seems to keep weird hours and I never hit it at the right time.

I always thought just looking at old buildings like the old courthouse is fascinating.

You've got to give that credit to Trish. I know nothing about Ameraucanas or EEs. I am learning about araucanas but that is the extent.

It wore me out as well. My legs and arms felt like jelly last night!

OH crap! It is fall again isn't it. I suppose the owls and hawks will be back at it. I'm so glad the babies are okay.

Well I left this morning with the intent to go to Council Grove to get some lab work done at the hospital. ..then over to my son's house to see my granddaughter. Meanwhile another son had his vehicle break down. He lives in Manhattan. He is supposed to be doing a bar-b-Q cook off with yet another son this weekend. So DH drove to Manhattan to give him his truck. I left Council Grove and headed to Manhattan to pick up DH. We came back through Topeka, had an early dinner and came back home. Then I had to feed and water every one. It was 7:30 before I got in the house and it finally started to rain here. We had been in rain for two hours prior to getting home but it was bone dry here.
I was supposed to have a person come this afternoon to get some roosters and eggs but I couldn't make it back in time. So that means I am making a trip to town tomorrow with them. No profit when I have to buy gas. I need to go spend some time with my Dad any way.
I had a bunch of chicks in the incubator this AM but never took the time to look at them to see what they were. I just stuck their beaks in the waterer and put them in with the other chicks in the bin. They're so crowded there's barely room to move.
Now my son and wife will be coming probably Sunday to return the truck so that means I have to clean this house some. It's been three weeks since I've had time to do much of anything. I'd just die if anyone saw the mess.
I'm trying to figure out when on earth I can find time to do it.

Danz, it is probably lucky that the hawk picked on Marlena's chick rather than one of the brooder chicks. They wouldn't have had anyone to rescue them.

I checked them out after they went in the coop when it started raining. I didn't find any bleeding or torn skin, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

The cockerel is developing some copper patches on his chest and sides, and one of the presumed girls has some copper in her hackle feather area. Tell me that doesn't mean she is a he.
