Consolidated Kansas

Here are 2 photos. They where being stubborn and would not come out from under the coop where they where resting:

2 of them look just like this!

Here on the left you can see the other one that I believe is a girl. She looks alot different the other 2!

Yeah, I'd have to agree with you Ashncarson. Darn. Almost every hatch I've had has been 75% female so wouldn't you know this is the one that isn't? There started with 6 in this hatch but I had a hawk visit and two of them ran into a roll of wire to hide and then couldn't figure out how to get out, and I didn't know they were there and didn't find them until 10 days later. I'd be willing to bet they were female and that would mean this hatch was 50% female but still. If I am going to be up your way any time soon, I'll let you know and I can trade out some other girls for them, or if you are going to be down this way, let me know and we can meet somewhere. The funny thing is, I have a batch of them that are younger than yours and it is really obvious which are the cockerels in the younger batch so I don't know why it was so hard to tell on these guys as old as they were when you got them from me.

How old are the other ones that you have? Will there be any trouble trying to mix ages, since I really don't have a good way to seperate them? I don't see us coming that way, any time soon, except for the end of October. I have to take hubby to the airport, but am not comfortable driving there more than I have to!

Those do look just like my little guy. It looks like you got two cockerels.

I had a busy day yesterday but sure didn't have much to show for it. I spent a few hours in my garden....or what the squash bugs have left of it. I'm hoping the weather holds out for a while because the tomato plants are loaded with nice green tomatoes. I think maybe I have my soil a little too fertile and have produced more vines than tomatoes so far this year. The vines have grown together all over the place so the garden is a total mess. Maybe next year I'll plant my rows further apart and plant the vining plants elsewhere. Not sure where.
Some of the beans are blooming again and I figured they were finished for the year so I guess I'll leave them for a while and see what they do. I should have planted a fall crop. I picked a bunch of shell out beans from the green beans and the limas. They'll be good to throw in soup or whatever later.
I had a bucket full of goodies I fed to the birds. Peppers with bad spots, lots of tomatoes with spots or that were split, some cucumbers, some tomatillos that were too old etc. Anyway at least some of the birds got some goodies.
I have a ton of stuff to work up in the kitchen yet.
I've got more chicks hatching today. Arg! I'm ready for a break.
DH has been working on my turkey pen and I'm hoping he gets it done enough today I can start the netting this week. I think we are going to haul a little more dirt in there to raise it up some to keep it drier during the wet season.
I feel like I need a vacation.

I had a yucky day yesterday, a headache that wouldn't go away, but at least I didn't have to spend the day in bed. I helped to hold boards while DH works on the new chicken house. We are just waiting on the tin to come in now. We pulled some more honey in the evening, after changing a flat (ruined) tire. Then I was off to bed. Today is much better.
Thanks everyone for the hoop coop ideas and pictures, we are getting the boards today to get one built. Off to Wichita now.

I took a pic of my new pen yesterday after we got it done. If you can't see in the pic there is tin on the top of it instead of a tarp this time. We had tin left over after building the goat shelter so I decided to put some of it to use. At least the water won't stand on it & bend it in like some of the tarped pens have done. We have had to reinforce them to try to fix the problem & I still have one that needs to be repaired. We used some pieces of 2x4 that I had left from building the side panel to raise the front up a bit for better drainage. It all slants back that way anyway since all our land slopes down that way from the hill behind our house. I have moved three Silver Laced Wyandottes & the little New Hamp cockerel in this pen.

I walked up yesterday to see my GP Jasmine laying at the back of this pen with two of her cat friends & one was giving her a massage. I just had to take a pic of it. When it's chilly out the cats often can be seen laying on top of the dog to keep warm.

OkieQueenBee, I hope you feel better today. Good luck on building your hoop coop. Be sure & take pics & post them when you get it done.

I had a rather scary weekend. I spent most of it in the hospital. I was out enjoying the local fall festival on Saturday when I started bleeding. I went to the ER, and they took me to the OB ward, where I stayed until Sunday afternoon. They kept me for observation and waited on the ultrasound tech to get back from her out-of-town trip. I had a follow-up appointment with my doctor this morning and ended up spending most of the day in town. Isn't it amazing how a short doctor's visit turns into an all day endeavor?!? Anyway, Baby and I are both fine. The doctor thinks it was a partial placental abruption, which probably fixed itself before I ever got to the hospital. The doctors at the hospital were just being extremely cautious because it could've (apparently) been a lot worse. However, I am now under orders to "take it easy" and to reduce my level of activity (not easy when you live on a farm and have animals to take care of). My poor DH gets to take the slack... The doctor thought that the chances of the placental abruption happening again were pretty low but wanted to make sure we were doing everything we could to avoid it (even though they don't know what causes them). He also mentioned that, if it were to happen again, they would probably just go ahead and deliver Baby. That was kind of a shock, in and of itself, because I keep telling myself I've got 5 weeks to get ready. The doctor said that Baby could be here as early as next week. Kinda scary! I'd better finish getting things ready for Baby and get my bags packed for the hospital! I was really missing my laptop this weekend when I was in the hospital... I feel rather kind of lost without being able to hop on the internet. :)
