Consolidated Kansas

Frizzle - So sorry... I hope he will turn up soon.

Lizzy - Glad to hear from you! I thought of you just yesterday and was wondering if you had your baby yet!

Trish - I hope you got some of your chores done yesterday because it feels colder today than yesterday... probably because of the cloudy sky.

Danz - Hope you got some chores done as well and caught up on laundry! I'm the odd one... I love to do laundry. I love hanging them outside to dry and folding them afterwards.

I'm working all day today so all my chores at home will have to wait. My car is in the shop (for the 3rd time in a month) because the low tire pressure alert keeps coming on. They couldn't find any leak last time so they told us they may have to take the rim off to check. Also they want to know if there is no leak found if I want to use the nitrogen to air up the tire instead since it is not as sensitive to the temperature change. Of course they have to charge us for that... Such a pain. Does anyone have nitrogen in their car or truck tires?

I really need to go get the pen for the peafowl done before the cold sets in. I'm like others, although I like the cold weather, I don't like working in the cold. I should have gotten it done a while back but I kept dragging my feet.

Back to work... Have a great day everyone.

Well Lizzy I am glad that all is well. I was MIA for a few days due to my Dad passing and I was afraid I had missed a post. I am glad that you are carrying the baby this long. I imagine at this point you are ready to have it over. I remember that last month or so always seemed to take so long. Luckily my children all arrived early. Enjoy your last few days of life without a child. For the next 50 years or so life will never be the same!
I love the eggs by themselves. If I had a jar I could use I might make some too. Right now I am trying to find something to make ACV in. I have the peelings and cores all ready. I just need to find the right container for fermenting.
I am so hating this cool weather. I have a feeling this is going to be a really hard winter for me. I already hurt all over. Cold and arthritis do not get along at all.
Tweety I honestly have never understood people who like the cold. My daughter lives in Evergreen, Colorado in the mountains and it is always snowy and cold. The country is beautiful but I could never stand that climate. I've always been an outside sunshine loving person. Winter just depresses me.
I got my laundry done other than getting the last load in the dryer. I wanted a clothes line but never got one. There was one here when I bought the place but it was in the wrong place and the poles were rotting out. I particularly love putting bedding on the line. When I was a kid all the clothes were hung on the line. I remember my fingers freezing while I hung them and how often in the winter they would freeze rather than dry. I don't miss that part at all.

All of this talk of hanging clothes outside reminds me of my childhood too, my mom had a side yard at our house that was very narrow & ran the length of the house & that is where the clothesline was. I remember her hanging clothes out there for years until finally she did get a dryer & stopped doing it. I used to have one at my house in Derby at one time, but we took the old metal poles down because it really was in the way to mow & all. Then I got one of the umbrella type of lines that I used for some things until I stopped using that too. I have lines in my laundry room now where I just hang things on hangers to dry if I don't want them in the dryer.

I'm with you Danz, I hate the cold any more, it makes me hurt so bad. Before I had arthritis it wasn't so bad, but really I've never been a cold weather person. I think being a Leo we tend to like the sunshine more. I go out there to care for the birds, but I make it as fast as I can when it's really cold, I just don't tolerate extremes of weather any more at all.

I'm intrigued by those salted eggs, I may have to try that or pickled ones too when I have some to use. Let us know Danz how that ACV turns out, I use quite a bit of it for chickens. I did make some orange cleaner recently that seems like it's going to work out pretty good. I love the citrus cleaners & saw the recipe on FB for making it with orange peels. You just tear off the skin of two oranges & put them in a jar with a lid & then cover it with white vinegar & leave it for a couple weeks to steep. After it's done it smells like orange, not vinegar at all. You just strain off the liquid then & put it in a spray bottle to clean with. It's really good at cutting greasy dirt. I made a couple of bottles of it & want to make some more too to have around.

It's supposed to be warmer Monday & Tuesday but it's also supposed to possibly rain. I'm hoping it doesn't at least one of those days so I can get some things I need to do done outside. I still have a few tarps to get on yet & I need to pick up all of my hoses outside & drain them & get them put away in the garage. That will mean hauling buckets of water from now on through the winter to all of the pens, not an easy task. I will have heated dog bowls in some of the pens & I have two heated bases I use in a couple too, but these are only the ones I can reach with extension cords. There will be quite a few pens I will just have to use rubber bowls in this year & dump the ice out of when it freezes. That's what I get for building so many pens, chicken math you know.

I'm sorry to hear about your dad. I am actually not as uncomfortable as many women at 39 weeks are. So far, just mild discomfort that's causing me to not sleep as well as I'd like. Other than that, I can't really complain too much. I also don't really want a Halloween baby - or a baby born just before Halloween... So, I'm perfectly happy to wait 'till early November.

I spent some more time today working on the nursery set, so I thought I'd share pictures. I wanted to extend a special THANK YOU! to all who suggested a diaper stacker. I started/finished it today and was able to clear out half a drawer full of diapers (all the one-size and fitted diapers fit but there wasn't enough room for the prefolds/covers). Storage is majorly lacking in the room, so I'm thrilled to do anything possible to increase the amount of storage in the room! Thank you for the suggestion!

Here's another picture of the crib. The crib blanket and the diaper stacker are my most recently finished items.

A better picture of the diaper stacker. I used thick, fusible interfacing on it, which made it a bit of a pain to sew, but I really like it now that it is done and think it will serve us well!

Another picture of the crib/window.

Hi All! Not to rub it in or anything but I am enjoying some 80 degree weather down here in Houston. :) Having a nice visit with my son and daughter in law, eating way too much food. Trish, you, Danz and me, being Leo's need the warmth of the sun. I am a cold weather hater, my toes and fingers freeze and I don't like putting on all the layers of clothes just to have to take them back off. I do like seeing a pretty snow and having a fire in the fireplace.
I guess I need to read up on making ACV, still have a lot of apples and I use it in my FF. Do any of you put it in the chickens' drinking water?
Trish sounds like you had a wonderful vacation. Being sick is not a good thing but at least it waited until you were on your way home.
LizzyGSR the nursery is looking great, I do believe you will have it ready. Give yourself some last minute "me" time, life is about to get interesting. :)
Here are some pictures that I didn't get posted before I left.

Yeah rub it in, we actually had a lot of days pretty close to 80 when we were on vacation in Greece, so it was kind of hard to come back to this 50s stuff. Yeah we got the sickest coming back & we have been sick all week still, my hubby didn't even go back to work which is really unusual for him but he's been feeling pretty bad too. It looks like you got quite a few Marans there, I would love to do a trade with you for a couple of pullets. The only one I have left is about 3 years old & she doesn't lay that much any more, she has about outlived her usefulness here. That's some nasty visitor you had to the pond, I used to like raccoons until I got chickens & they started killing them, now I hate the critters along with possums. I'm glad you're having a good time there, enjoy it.

Lizzy, I'm glad you're hanging in there, it's better for the baby if you can carry to term. I love the nursery stuff you have done, it's really cute. You will like that diaper stacker, I had one way back when & really used mine. I'm glad you're doing so well, that's great, enjoy it while you have peace & quiet. Your life is about to change & it will never be the same again.

Wow! Lizzy the quilt and the diaper stacker really drew the room together. It looks awesome. Makes me want to start working on the stuff for my daughter in law. I guess maybe I should wait until they are at least trying to get pregnant.
Okie QB looks like the incubator did an excellent job. You are going to have a ton of chickens. A woman after my own heart.
I just got back in the house. I spent a couple hours just treating birds' water with ivermectin. Hopefully everyone will go into winter healthy and bug free.
I'm like you in that I love looking at a nice new blanket of snow and having a fire going. But the fun ends as soon as I have to get out in it. I'd still rather have snow than ice any day.a
I finally finished the netting on the turkey pen with lots of piecing and lacing. It is ready for the turkeys now but I decided to move them tomorrow when I have more time. I had to finish feeding all the birds after I got done. I wish I had planted some grass in that pen. I have stuff coming up now but it's just weeds of course. Anyway the turkeys will surely enjoy it cause they will have lots of shade in the summer. I'll try to get some pictures tomorrow or something.
DH painted the Breda hut today. I wish he had painted all these others that desperately need it. But at least that one will be protected from the weather a little. I do wish I had some colored paint and could paint everything some nice colors instead of just white barn paint.

Every time Queen Bee takes off I have a medical problem with a bird

This time I found one of the first year peachicks has a swollen shut eye. Looks like an injury as it is very puffed up and matted shut with a really hard crust. I was wondering if a coating of Vaseline would soften it enough to get it open. Also should I give it a shot of antibiotics?

All,
I am sorry this isn't necessarily chicken related (even though he has helped us with building and moving coops multiple times )but at this point we are desperate. This is a family friend and our hearts are breaking and the only thing i can do at this point is get this flyer out in front of as many people as we can and pray that someone/anyone that knows anything will come forward.

I am sorry to be a downer but please i HAVE to try everything at this point. Thank you for understanding.
I shared onto my facebook. Good luck
