Consolidated Kansas

I've got to get in the shower and then get birds ready to go to town. I just finished washing and packaging the eggs that go. I may see if there are any yet this morning. I have to be sure and save some for myself to cook with too.
I'm going to spend a little time with my sister too. I'm always in a rush. So I think I'll pick her up and she can go with me to deliver eggs and birds.
I sent DH to go pick up my feed. I paid for it so all he has to do is bring it home. It's not going to be fun shoveling it. We have another cold front moving in and tomorrow it is supposed to be super cold. The temp is supposed to start dropping again about 2PM today. It's supposed to get down to 12 degrees in the morning!!! Oh burr!!!
I am ready for spring already!!!

I hear you on the Danz, me too, it it were up to me we would skip winter altogether.

Do you all remember about my cat in the house that has been sick? Well she got some better but never did totally get her nose cleared out so she can really breathe through it. She is eating & drinking & otherwise acting fairly normal but she just can't seem to clear this stuff, so yesterday I called the Vet's office & had her call me & asked her what her next suggestion was. She indicated the steroids were necessary to get her airway cleared but it has slowed her recovery from the infection. So we had to get a stronger yet antibiotic for her yesterday, sigh. I sure hope this cat gets over this stuff, she is costing a mint.

I've got two that really need to go get steroid shots. Finding the time is just impossible these days.
I got the roosters, a turkey and eggs taken to town and got $50 for the bird lot and a few dozen eggs. Made me happy. Then I went and spent an hour and a half or so with my sister. I got my Mom's computer and brought it home as a gift for my DH. He's been using my old computer and cusses it all the time. It's just older and doesn't have enough memory and drive space left to do a lot. I could empty it out and reprogram it if I wanted to take the time but I really don't have the hours it takes to do so. Maybe I can get my oldest son to do that on Christmas.
I ran by the grocery store and picked up a couple things. I was surprised it wasn't busier than it was. Good timing I guess.
Then of course once I got home it was time to feed and water. I made sure all the birds had plenty of both because tomorrow is supposed to be miserable. I may not want to spend much time out there.

One of my original girls (hatched 2010) is dying this evening. She has had some laying problems since her first hard molt and a perpetually messy bottom. Her eggs have been a bit misshapen for a long time, so I suspect a laying issue. I found her collapsed in the nest box in the coop, so I brought her in and put her in a dog carrier in the heated part of the garage. Her neck is hanging and she doesn't seem to have control of her legs.

I wish I had the intestinal fortitude to euthanize her, but I just can't. She was an awesome layer (6 eggs a week) for just over a year, and she is a pet that jumps in my lap for petting, so it is especially hard.

Poor Lucy. It is a tough world when you are a chicken. She was about 3rd or 4th in the pecking order right up to the end though, so she had some good times, too. This picture was at about the time she started to lay.

sharol, I'm sorry about your hen, it's always hard to lose any of them, but especially a special one.

I have been layering leaves in my growout pen where my young chicks are hoping that it would help insualte the ground a little more. I have straw in there too, but I'm totally out of it now until I get more delivered. I figured anything would help & I have a heat lamp in there for them too. Tomorrow is going to be a cold day so I hope it helps them to stay warmer. Some of the bigger ones probably will be OK, but I worry about the smaller ones out there.

I let the ducks out for the first time in a few days & they just went over in front of my hoop coop & stood there like they were visiting the Lemon Cuckoo Orps. They've been kind of lost since the other older ducks aren't here now. They have no older leaders to follow around. Hopefully as they get older they will get more comfortable with their own little group & one of them will take over as leader. They're still young yet.

Yes!

I'm sorry she's still having a bit of a hard time. Sounds like she's a hardy cat, though, determined to hang in there.

My hubby got the nest box built today :) We still need to attach the lid with hinges and add some shingles! Does it need any vents?

It looks great! It's really nice to be able to get to the eggs from the outside, too.

Lucy's a pretty girl. I'm so sorry she's dying.

I got the house cleaned yesterday and today, and cleaned out the fridge. I guess I'm ready to start cooking tomorrow. I don't seem to be as stressed out as I usually am this time of year. Should I be worried about that?
