Consolidated Kansas

Hi I'm back from florida its too cold here lol well its good to have internet anyways does any one know what age barred rocks start lYing eggs I tried looking it up and found conflicti g from 16 weeks to 24 weeks ? Thanks also as an update mama bird is still haging in there.

We had HughesNet for two years & couldn't wait to get off of it, I won't have satellite internet here again either, it's the pits. They & Wild Blue both have download limits that they just "forget" to tell you about that is in the fine print & then you find out later when they cut your internet down to dial-up speed as a punishment for going over. Heck Windows updates can go over the download limit they set, it's ridiculous & we had one of the highest speeds & paid a goodly amount for service but still went over just with software updates. We never downloaded music or let anyone else do it & that's what they were terrified someone would do. I have friends down the hill from us that lived in town before they moved out here & they had Cox cable, she says that they had more outages with it than they have with the wireless service we both have now for internet. So I guess it's just a matter of where your service is & who runs it.
We have HughesNet now. It's the only internet service provider we can get, save for WildBlue. We are down in a big valley, so we can't even get internet through our cell phones (we don't have cell service here). HughesNet is sufficient for what I need, but I get really frustrated when I need to download something. I've got all the automatic updates turned off so I don't go over my limit. I try to run the updates in the middle of the night when it doesn't affect my limit. The biggest problem I have is that it goes out when we get any type of big storm through here and, other than the weather radio, we don't have access to TV or anything else to figure out what the weather is doing. Our house is surrounded by trees and we are in a valley so we wouldn't see anything coming at us until it was right on top of us. That's why I go to the basement at the slightest indication of severe weather.... at least until the phone rings wanting a weather report (my DH works for the National Weather Service and they call here regularly for storm reports).

It's been glorious outside. We actually have some sunshine. I got my chores done without feeling like I'd been beaten to death. I've been burning a ton of trash. I need to get some more out there. I took my orp hen out to play and lost her for awhile. I was starting to panic. I finally found her on the back side of the goose pen. I went in and thawed out some frozen peas to treat the chickens and she was hiding between trash barrels. Poor girl! So I brought her back in and she is sitting in her official corner taking a nap now. I'm wondering how I'm ever going to get her acclimated to being outside again when she gets so scared of other chickens.
Cleansquared, I think barred rocks are supposed to lay between about 20 -23 weeks of age. A lot depends on the breeding. If they are heritage breed they might take a little longer.
HEChicken we made it to 39 as well. Awesome!
I guess I'd better get back out there and blow out hoses so I don't have a bad day tomorrow. I almost feel alive again.

I guess it did finally get to 39 today, it was supposed to be 42 but it didn't make it to that. I actually was able to go out with just my coat, hat, & gloves today instead of having to suit up in my coveralls. I was really thankful for that sun today & the chickens were really enjoying it this afternoon, however it didn't quite get to the pens I needed it to in order to thaw out my water pans. I still had to dump the ice out & carry buckets of water. I guess tomorrow is supposed to be colder & then warmer the next day, it has to tease us. I looked at the extended forecast & maybe we're going to get lucky & have it above freezing for awhile. I could go for that!

My GPs have just been going beserk barking at night, I don't know what they're after out there, but there is definitely something. They never just stand out there & bark for nothing. I did see wild turkey tracks over by my hoop coops today, so evidently they visited during the night, maybe looking for food or water. That may be part of what the dogs were barking so much at last night. They consider them intruders even though they're just birds, they know they don't belong here.

Danz, do you remember when we went up to Frank's farm & got the eggs for the BRs from him? I can't remember about when that was so I can get a reference on how old these two are that I have running around here. BTW, HEChicken those two little pullets I got from you are doing great. The rooster hasn't been bothering me lately, so maybe he is starting to settle down, I hope so anyway. I would hate to have to send him to freezer camp, he's just too good looking for that.

I just looked back on my PMs & found it, they should have hatched about the 3rd of May give or take a day or two, so they're getting close to the age the pullet should start laying before too long.

Thanks for the update! I was just thinking about your cockerel yesterday and was going to ask you how he is doing.

None of my Reese BR's is laying now, even the pullets that hatched March/April this year. Hopefully in spring they'll all take off.

So I took a chance yesterday and put the recovered sick chicken back out with the other girls.....Lots of fighting happened, she went after the newer birds that she had not had lots of time to get to know before she had to come inside...Her sister took off after her and grabbed a feather and yanked at it! After that she was quite upset but seemed to stop chasing the others around...she had to sleep by herself on one end of the roost!

Today she looks really good, her comb is back to nice and pink and I can hardly tell which one she is compared to her sister! They will be 22 weeks old tomorrow....I wish I could get eggs soon to show my husband that it is all paying off, but I know with it being winter, that I might not get any of a while still!

HEchicken, the NH pullet you gave me is a beautiful girl, her name is Honey...she is a noisy one! I can tell her "voice" from all the others even if I can't see her~

They basically have everything! I have never searched for a DVD that Netflix did NOT have it, including some that you wouldn't expect them to have. For example, I searched for a kids' TV show that was on in Australia 35+ years ago. I.e., something that is pretty obscure here - Netflix had it. Most recently, we were able to watch the whole first season of Game of Thrones, even though DH didn't think they'd have it because it is an HBO exclusive.
Thank you for the good review! I was able to talk my husband into trying the 2-disk free trail! Movies are on there way already should be here today! They are quick!
