Consolidated Kansas

It's cold and windy this morning and misty out. The wind is blowing enough it is moving the electric gate. I had to run out to get some feed for the house critters. It's only supposed to get to 30 degrees here today. I thought it was actually supposed to warm up a bit. Of course if the forecast is favorable it will change. Tomorrow is looking better if it doesn't change. I need a shot of energy from some where so I can get some things done. I do feel slightly better this morning. I hope it lasts.

My duck made it back! I looked out the window a few minutes ago and she was waiting outside the gate to be let back in so I ran down and did just that. I tried to tell myself all day yesterday and last night (when I couldn’t sleep for worrying about her), that I didn’t care and there was no point worrying because there was nothing I could do about her (she landed in the middle of a huge pond when I tried to herd her back home), but I wasn’t fooling myself. I worried anyway.

Danz, you’re right – it is cold this morning. We got more rain yesterday and it stayed warm enough it didn’t freeze. It was still 38 when I went to bed last night but had dropped well below freezing by the time I woke this morning. Back to carrying out water to the birds. Ho hum.

So glad your duck made it home. Thank goodness that fox can't swim!
I thought I was feeling better today but now I'm back to sneezing and stuff. I can't believe how close it is to Christmas and how far behind I am. I need to get some home made soaps made today for gifts. Not my idea...they were requested.
I gave my peachick some sulfa drugs this morning. (S)he isn't eating or drinking at all. I wish I had some Steroid I could give as an injection. That might stimulate it's appetite. I should have married a bird vet for sure. Anyone know any single ones a few years from retirement?

Not a good day. I was working on the Christmas tree and trying to make some soap. DH decided to water for me and found another dead peachick. I am baffled. I have no idea what is wrong with these birds. The white one I brought in yesterday isn't standing. She also is not eating or drinking. I gave it some sulpha drugs with a dropper but it hasn't eaten or drank anything on it's own. Makes me feel hopeless and sick. I have no idea what is wrong. I am loosing money but worse yet I am loosing some really beautiful birds.
Other than that I was decorating the tree. When I get done with my lighting I'll take a picture of it and post it here.

I was ready to go to bed but realized I am still doing laundry and washed bedding today!

Omigosh, I have done that more than once. The last thing you want to have to do at that point is make the bed before you fall into it. Sorry you caught my cold!

My duck made it back!

Woohoo!

I'm so sorry about the peachick. I don't know anything about raising them.

DH put up the outdoor lights this afternoon, so we finally look a little festive.

Danz, so sorry about your peachicks also. No help here - I've had very little to do with them. I am just now getting over my cold. It certainly wasn't the worst one I've ever had but I never like being sick.

Well I did another necropsy and this time I checked the crop which I try not to do unless I can't find much else. I think I found the reason I am loosing peachicks. I also talked to Brad from Leggs peafowl and he came up with the same conclusion I did. Capillary worms. Not ever been a problem that I know of but I spent a bunch of time reading today and that is all I could come up with. I did find some tiny worms in this peachick's crop. Also the invermectin won't kill these. Unfortunately I can't get any Safe-guard wormer for goats tonight which is what I need! I am afraid the white peachick will be gone before tomorrow. But I'll make a drive to Topeka tomorrow and get some at TSC. I wish there was something I could do for this bird so I won't loose it. Makes me so sad! My DH is in Emporia and I called him to see if he could get some at Bluestem but he told me they closed at 5:30. It was 5:57 when I called him.
My guess is if the peachicks have these then the other birds would too. Particularly the turkeys so I'd better get a couple bottles and treat all the birds. So much for staying on top of worming.
I hope I can get these birds wormed before I loose any more.
I got one batch of lavender bud soap made today. I plan to make some camomile and some oatmeal soap too. I just don't have molds to go ahead and make more today. I'll have to work on those later this week.

Capillary worms, is that common with Peafowl? I always wormed the peafowl & turkeys with Safeguard before until recently when I used that Rooster Booster stuff. I looked & the Rooster Booster does say it gets rid of capillary worms as well, I couldn't remember what it treats for. It says it treats for round worms, cecal worms and capillary worms. I have one more dose left, maybe I should go ahead & treat all the birds again then do it in the spring again as well.

It's been really busy around here the last few days, I have had to run here & there the last couple days & then today my son & future daughter-in-law & granddaughter were here. They'll be back tomorrow to pick up the rest of the things they couldn't get in the car this evening that I'm sending home with them. We got them a 3 in 1 high chair that will be good for a long time, it eventually converts to a booster chair. I also found a box of baby boy clothes for her to take & a few other things. Dana is looking so cute with her pregnant belly, she's all baby. So far the Dr. is telling her the baby is 3 weeks ahead in size & development. They keep moving up her due date sooner. She really doesn't think she will go past the end of January, we'll see. She goes again for another sonogram on Monday.

What I've read Trish, is that any diseases that effect turkeys will also effect peafowl. You wouldn't necessarily link those two together but I guess they are susceptible to the same things. Capillary worms were listed on their list of common diseases. I guess since I have to go get wormer for them I'll treat the turkeys and the chickens too. I swear it is one thing after another. I try so hard to care for the birds but it seems some times it's a loosing battle. I'm guessing if these peachicks have them then all the other birds probably do to.
Sure glad I didn't have to worm my kids like I have to worm the birds!

I'm glad you have time with your son and the granddaughters, Trish.
I can't believe it's only 10 days till Christmas and I have so much to do to get done. Some how I've really got to get focused.
I had some more chicks hatch yesterday and I need to figure out where to put them. I just don't have a space for them right now.

Danz- sorry your Pea birds are having trouble . It does get really frustrating when the hard work doesn't seem to pay off.
DD and I went to Lawrence today for some shopping and on the way we saw 4 big white swans in a field . I guess they were just stopping for a break in their migration from somewhere to somewhere ? Goodness those are huge birds ! (I tried to up-load a bad picture but either the website or my phone was not working) Come to think of it I don't believe I've ever heard anyone on this thread mention swans. Does anybody ever try to raise them ? They looked like they would need a pretty big pond .
