Well, I am covered in Gentian Violet right now. I went out to do animal chores and noticed one of the little lamb's ears was bleeding. It must have just happened and it was cut on the tip of it but everything she touched got blood on it, so after she got done eating, I picked her up and carried her inside to stop the bleeding and treat it. It is just a flesh wound and another time of the year I wouldn't have worried too much but as cold as it is this morning, I worried about her getting frostbite on it so I thought I should do something. She was so sweet, and just sat on my lap and reached up to sniff my face, while DH went to get the Blu-Kote. Now of course, despite taking lots of precautions to prevent getting it on myself, I am covered in the stuff. It didn't help that after spraying it on the cut and congratulating myself on my accuracy, she shook her head and sprayed it everywhere! Anyway, she was most relieved to be returned to her flock, as you can imagine - people houses are SCARY.

When I treated my rooster's comb last winter, he shook his head and the stuff went everywhere. I still have a splotch on the roost, and I didn't think I would ever get it off of my glasses. That is quite an image -- lamb on lap, blue spots everywhere.

For once, we missed out on all of the snow and yucky weather that you all got. We got a dusting last night and are getting flurries now, but it isn't supposed to amount to much. Ours highs have been in the 30s and 40s so it hasn't even been too terribly cold.

I came down with some crud yesterday and asked my husband to stay home from work to take care of Ethan. It's a good thing too 'cuz he ended up with some yuck of his own. We're both feeling better after getting some extra sleep yesterday. Ethan was fussy yesterday as well. I kinda wonder if he was feeling a little under the weather as well. He seems to be back to his happy-camper self today though.

We got so much freezing ice rain that yesterday I went out to the barn to water and feed every one and I couldn't get in the door was frozen shut I had to beat the ice off door and wall to get in but once I did everyone was warm and fine the bared rock babies have two heat lams legbars have one lots of snow on the ground today but snow is easier to walk on than ice!.

Sharol good to see you back on here. By the way since she lives out your way do you have any knowledge about chickies,duckies,etc. She hasn't posted in months. I was just wondering if something had happened to her. I know her health wasn't the best.
I had frozen latches, doors, you name it yesterday. Several places I had to pound with something to get them open. We're getting snow here again. It's been snowing for a couple hours but not real heavy. Lizzy you are lucky you have that warm of weather. We are predicted to have -2 in the morning.

Oh I can just picture that, you're lucky it was a lamb instead of a goat with the bleeding ear, that really would have been a fiasco. I'm sorry you got the blue kote all over you though, that's a mess.

How did you get so lucky, wow. We got just enough snow on top of the ice to give us some traction to walk on it with slipping so much. I did slide a little in a couple of places yesterday, but it was better than the day before when the ice was coming down & I was afraid with every step. I don't bounce so well any more. It's supposed to be 5 degrees tonight, so that's not going to be good, but warm up to 37 tomorrow. Maybe we'll get this junk melted off the next few days because it's supposed to be in the 40s for a few days.

The GPs were much quieter last night after a point, so maybe the predators finally gave up & moved on to someone else's place for awhile. I'm sure the dogs were glad to catch a break, they've been working hard lately. They sure have been enjoying playing out there in the snow, this is just their favorite time of year. I guess it's kind of a heritage thing with them since the breed originally came from mountain regions with lots of snow & they have such heavy coats.

I'm not at all envious of all the problems the precipitation has caused... It seems rare this time of year that the rest of KS gets a winter storm and we miss out. It is still cold out this way though. It is currently only 19*F, and the wind chill is in the single digits. That's wind chill, though - not actual temperatures, thank goodness.

Well that's kind of what we get when we live where we do, we most usually get the ice first & then the snow. I would much rather have snow any day than ice. I think my son thought when he moved to OKC that he wouldn't have to deal with that so much, but it seems they have had the same weather we have had or worse down there. I think Hawkeye has thought the same thing & has been surprised.

I let my chickens out today & they first thought they wanted out & then were disappointed to find out after getting out there that the ground is still covered with ice & snow, so most of them retreated back into the dry run & coop. I went out to gather eggs from in the coop & one hen thought she was going to keep the eggs she was sitting on. I was trying to collect them & she was trying to cover them up again. I have a new pullet laying tiny little white eggs, it may be one of those Exchequers HEChicken.

We are past the shortest day of the year!!! For me that is always a milestone as from here on out, Spring is just right around the corner. Right???? So I can look forward to birds who've been taking a hiatus starting to lay again and stuff like that.

Well that's one way to look at it, I wish spring was just around the corner. Unfortunately we have the hardest months of winter to get through yet. I'm hoping since we started out so early that we will have an early spring, let's hope for that anyway.

All of my white egg layers have been laying except maybe that one that just started. I just got another teeny little egg from her today. They're so small that it takes two eggs to make breakfast with them. Hopefully she'll get with the program soon & start laying bigger ones. I've really been surprised at how big the eggs are from the Leghorns because they're such small birds, but they lay what I consider large eggs.

Berrrr Humbug ! This is just too cold ! I know it could be a lot worse, temp. wise but it sure does make me appreciate the folks that really have to work out side. ( farmers ,fireman ,ect..) Hope everybody is ok by morning.
