Olathe here, new to the game. Wondering if legal or not. I get conflicting answers, so keeping the down low here with 2 at the moment.

We had a discussion a while back about chickens in Olathe. I believe it was made a regular ordinance then. I would call City Hall to be sure, or you could send a PM to pikeman94 who posts here now and then. He lives at Olathe. I do know there are some HOAs that don't allow chickens there.

Danz, I used to have extremely bad sinus infections, the kind that made me want to end it all. I used all types of preparations and medications with no avail, god I was miserable. Finally I got tested and began a desensitizing program, it was supposed to take two years of weekly injections, but I quit after about eighteen months, long story, but the short of it is that it worked wonderfully. I haven't had a serious bout like I had before since and I highly recommend you look into it.
KingBee I'm allergic to the world. I seem to do pretty well if I remember to do the salt water cleansing and I take singulair and and over the counter medicine that usually keeps it under control so I'm not miserable. DH was really afraid that when I bought this place in the country I would be sick all the time but I've actually gotten much better. Harvest time and rainy spring time are my worst seasons now.
I had at one time gone to a hypnotist. She had a program where she would take a baggie full of whatever allergy was bothering you the most. I.E. cat damper or furr. Under hypnosis she would somehow have you breath some of that and subconsciously you would no longer be allergic to it. It sounds strange but she had many clients who used her for that. Unfortunately most insurance wouldn't pay for it and at $80 an hour it added up really fast. Note: I used her for some other issues and she was awesome.
KKB congrats on being able to do that with the turkeys, I'm not sure I'm brave enough to inject something into a bird's sinus. I have only recently started giving birds injections at all. I had always given them meds in the water up till then. I guess everyone's experiences with allergy testing & treatment are different. I had all the testing years ago & went through the shots for awhile, but could see no improvement so I stopped. I just take daily allergy meds now & use saline nose drops. I used to use a prescription nose spray, but it made my nose bleed, so I stopped using it & just started using the plain saline nose spray. It really seems to help better than the prescription did.

cherwill, what is the lemon EO you're talking about you rub on the side of your nose? That sounds interesting.
Trish here's a link to that place I told you about where I buy essential oils and stuff for lemon EO: http://www.bulkapothecary.com/search.php?search_query=lemon
One thing I'm trying to do is to use more natural cleaning products in the house. I have started making my own laundry detergent & I have made a cleaning spray that I really love. It's very simple, just white vinegar & orange peels that you steep for two weeks & then drain the liquid off of the peels & put it in a spray bottle. Boy does that stuff clean greasy dirt & all, I love it & it doesn't even smell like vinegar after it steeps with the orange peels for 2 weeks. I also found that plain baking soda made into a paste cleans my ceramic stove top a lot better than the stuff you buy to clean it with. It doesn't scratch the surface & it even cleans off cooked on stuff on the burners. I'm going to look into some other things to make as well. HEChicken I have been using that deodorant for a few months now that you told us about & really like it. It lasts for a long time too.
I have three batches of Trish's orange cleaner on the counter right now. One of them should be ready to use. I just haven't gotten it into a spray bottle yet. I used two orange peels covered with white vinegar. HEChicken you could try it with the tangerine/Mandarin orange peels. I think orange has some kind of oil that is different but it might work just as well. You could try it and report back!! I did read one recipe that said you could use clementines which are in fact Mandarin oranges. Not sure about the tangerines. You would get the citrus scent from them but not sure if you'd get the cleaning power. Just sayin. I also read if you have used some other cleaning products earlier like windex you might get some streaking because it leaves a film but that is supposed to go away with subsequent use. I'm anxious to try it in the kitchen where fine greese particles seem to get on everything.
I have been making soaps and detergents and lots of things from scratch. It is so much cheaper and doesn't break me out like commercial products do.
HEChicken I never did try the deodorant thing. What was that you used? I have always used an antiperspirant so I hadn't tried it. I might be open to trying that now that it is winter.
Speaking of winter....it definitely is. It quit snowing in the last 30 minutes but the wind is blowing so hard you wouldn't know it. Of course its one of those snows you'd never have a clue how much you actually got. Drifts here and there. The ground is white but I don't think we got all that much. I know last night that Manhattan had 3 and half inches about 10PM and it was just getting started here. The gates are open and I don't see a single chicken outside. I need to figure out where the 2013 geese are. They don't use the house provided for them and they free range around the yard so I'm not sure where they holed up.

Welcome, new people! glad to have you. CHIKENROOKIE~ we're out in Gardner but my Sister lives in the older part of Olathe, she says she hears chickens all the time, and I've seen a few in some yards.
Probably not a big deal if you don't have a roo and keep your numbers down, good to keep checking tho.
Thanks guys! all this talk of sinuses and I wake up today with a nasty sinus headache...(jk) No surprise really, after some sugary holiday excess,a closed up DRY house and all these weather fronts rolling thru every couple days. My go-to is the saline rinse with some coconut oil added, soothing if nothing else.
We have a black hen that we got last summer who got that swollen eye/ sinus thing,we treated her with antibiotics and also extracted some chunky yellow gunk from her eye, she got much better but never seemed to pull all the way thru, then I read on another thread on BYC about Castor oil being a" good for what ales ya" treatment so I gave her about a mil.with a syringe down the throat . Next day she was up and perky and her comb was brighter and she's been working her way up the pecking order ever since. It was pretty cheep too, couple bucks at Price Chopper for a small bottle.
The geese and the chickens seem to be pretty content to stay together in the one coop and not go out ,so that's what we'll do probably till Tues. when this cold air starts to move out.
ASHNCARSON- Your hens are looking really nice !
Stay warm everyone.

HEChicken you could try the mandarins, but I agree with Danz that it's the oil in the peel that does the cleaning so well. I know you can use lemons too, but they're more pricey & that's why I did the orange. Besides I like the commercial orange cleaners & this works just as well as the ones of those I tried. I have some more steeping for myself as well so I keep enough around. I have a range hood that gets greasy dirt just from cooking & dust in the air & this stuff just cuts right through that.

I opened up one of the toppers so the dogs could get in there if they want, but I just looked in the backyard & there is Lily laying out there in the snow with cats all around her. The weather just really doesn't seem to bother these dogs much unless it rains for a long time & they get tired of being wet. I looked at the weather forecast & it says Monday morning will be the lowest temp & windchill. It's 17 degrees here right now, brrrr. I'm sure not looking forward to going outside for sure today. I don't know how much snow we got yet, I'll have to look it up after while. I don't think we got that much really, just enough to make it white out there & make a mess of the driveway.

Welcome CHICKENROOKIE!

I've been adding a little cod liver oil to my FF to give some extra vitamin A & D right now during the winter when the chickens don't get as much sun & green stuff. I probably won't give it to them in warm weather.

The wild turkey we injected two days ago is really improving, the swelling has almost completely gone away. It looks like one injection is all she is going to get, she is really skittish today, she may not recognize us we were so bundled up.

The desensitizing program turned into a living hell by the time I quit, the aching shoulders and buttocks/hips just got to be too much to finish the two years but like I said it was well worth it for me in the end. (No pun intended)

I don't have to use any kind of sinus product anymore. I was just about allergic to everything before the program. Oh, one thing that made it worse was nasal sprays, according to the doctor the applicator was growing bacteria from being inserted into the nose. I suggest that if you use one that you not insert it into the nose, just spray from close to the nostril.

HEchicken, perhaps if you were to straddle and set on the turkey you may be able to hold it down still enough to inject it using both hands. We were told to use a large gauge needle and it is tough to get through the skin, so get a good grip on it wrapping all four fingers around the syringe and use your thumb to push the plunger. I think it may also help to hold the bird for a few minutes letting it relax before you begin.

The turkey may be skittish now because you handled it. I have a lavender Ameraucana rooster that after giving him one injection because he was sick now goes beserk every time I come into his pen. If I get too close to him he flies all over & otherwise he just paces until I'm out of there. That's all from only one injection & he wasn't like that before I gave it to him. I'm hoping he eventually will get over it & settle down again, he is one I raised from an egg from my hens & I plan to use him for breeding.

How did they do the desensitizing, Kind Bee. I've never heard of that.
I ventured out and was glad to see that most of the birds were in good shape. They all had water and most was okay other than a couple heated water bowls were partially frozen over. Everyone had feed except those who's feed sits partially outside and it was all covered with snow.
My peacock barn had lots of snow that blew in. I'm not sure how it came in but there are some openings here and there on the North side with enough wind I suppose it could come in. I've never seen it do that before. Other than knocking the snow off feed all looked okay. I'll need to run out later and put some more water in the brooder house but that's about it.
The geese are laying in the snow by the trailer. Not sure why they picked that spot when they have a shelter 20 feet from there they could use. I thought I might open the door on the green house so they could get in, but DH has some equipment in there he probably doesn't want them messing with. I might do that tonight anyway. That's where I raised them as babies so they are used to it. I bundled up well but I am sure I wouldn't want to spend a bunch of time out there.

HAPPY DAY! I joked with my husband this morning before church and said it would be funny if we got our first egg on one of the coldest days! I just went out to give fresh water since they refuse to leave the coop today and look what we found :) our first egg! I never knew it would be so exciting!

I ended up having sinus surgery to help fight sinus infections, I believe it was 4 or 5 years ago....so young for that, but I was so sick all the time. Since then other health issues have came up, but it did help cut down the number of infections I have had.

Funny thing bout HOA, my next door neighbor is the pres, and I am the vice pres...... if others approached me? I would not have a problem with it!!
