Cleansquared that would be an excellent idea for chicken coops. The problem of course would be buying the equipment for the solar panel.

danz they sell little solar panels at rv / camping supply type stores that run thoes little fans for less than 20 $ my friends who do outside fairs buy them to use for summer events to keep their tents cooler so im sure you could use the same thing to run your ice fan
Five gallon bucket =free ( who doesnt have one laying around?)
Small fan =10$ @ wallmart or 2$ at a garage sale
galon jug=free
styrofoam insert..????
Pvc $3
Solar set up=20$

I like that bucket cooler idea, do you think the chickens would resist their natural instinct to go lay out in the shade and go into the coop instead if one of those cooler buckets where in the coop ? I could see it being great for a broody hen in the hottest part of the summer.
Cleansquared~we're sick too head,throat,sinus & chest YUCK !

I'm ready for spring too,the cold forecast for this week is disappointing

Sharrol~ sorry about your "dumpy" hen. Have you ever tried Castor oil ? Some old timer on BYC recommended it ,not a lot if info out there about it .I use it once in a while as a" good for what ales ya" treatment when I don't really know why they are down in the dumps.I usually see a big improvement in 24 hrs. Glad the blue dog found a good home.

Danz congrats on the peafowl egg, it seems like they sure are laying early this year. I hope some turn out to be fertile soon.

Jerilyn welcome! Do you know what kind of chicks you're looking for breed-wise? I'm not too far from you in Winfield & I hatch quite a few different breeds. If you're interested in knowing what I have send me a PM. I just started getting a few eggs from some of the breeders, but not all of them are laying yet.

We just got back from OKC, we were down visiting my son & seeing the new grandson again. It was so good to see him again, he is just an adorable little guy. We took the girls down to meet him for the first time & big sister was enthralled with him I think. We also got to go with them to look at a house they're thinking of buying, it's really nice. The grandma that is going to babysit when mom goes back to work only lives a couple of miles from there. Anyway, it was a good day with the grandkids.

Lizzy, you guys sure put in some hard labor to get the cattles in the trailer. Glad it went well. Missing horses would give me a heart attack. I always scare myself unnecessarily. Glad they are safe and sound. How's the little one?
I was really getting worried about the horses, but I walked most of the fence on my trek through the pasture and didn't see anywhere they could've gotten out.

This weekend was crazy busy. I found out Friday morning that my aunt from Iowa would be visiting my parents this weekend. My sister told me that she was going to go visit my parents so she could see my aunt. She invited me to ride with her from her house to my parents house. So, Friday afternoon, I was running around like a crazy person, trying desperately to get my weekend chores done in an afternoon, in addition to packing for the trip. After going to bed kinda late, I set my alarm for 5:30AM so I could get up, finish packing (diaper laundry wasn't finished drying by the time I went to bed), and get out of the house by 7:30AM. Of course, Ethan decided he had to get me up half an hour before the alarm went off. He isn't used to a lot of noise (I work from home and we are the only ones here most of the time during the day) so he didn't sleep very well while we were visiting with my family. By the end of the day, he was pretty cranky. Add to that the fact that he's got a bit of a cold and has a stuffy nose, and he was a rather upset Wee One. After almost a week of him not sleeping well, and therefore me not sleeping well, I am feeling pretty worn out. Hopefully, I can convince him to let me take a nap today. I could really use one.

Liz you can safly dilute some lavender essential oil use one drop in a 1-2 tablespoons of your normal lotion (not baby oil) make sure its well mixed and dont use more than a drop. Smooth this mix on legs and torso not face ! of said baby this should help him and you get a good night sleep mabe after a bath.. aura cacia is the best brand for therapy essential oils usually avaliable at health food stores.

On the bucket cooler I was wondering if you couldnt use an old water cooler jug which should already have insulation in it..... I was just going to plug it in in the barn when. I try it I figure one spot if tbey need it to stay cool would be helpfull or mabye by nesting boxes ...just a thought also I wonder if you. Couldnt use a computer fan im not sure how that would. Compare. Guess we will have to see if I live through the winter plauge that I cought lol then worry about building buckets..

LOL Lizzy, your life is starting to sound like mine!!! Thank goodness I don't have a baby on top of every thing else.
I was in the middle of doing laundry this AM and drying a load of clothes. Suddenly I could no longer hear the clothes dryer. Yep it quit. So that was one more project to deal with. Luckily it was repairable but still took my DH several hours messing with it. I guess I am just going to have to watch sales so I can buy one to match my washer when they are on sale. The dryer is old.
I had put the wet clothes in a clothes basket where we usually throw the dirty clothes. I had washed it out so the clothes would stay clean. A few moments ago I remembered them and thought I had better get them in the dryer. And guess what. DH had dirtied up some rags and towels and thrown them on top of the damp clean clothes. He never puts anything where it belongs. Why in the H&*^ did he choose this time to put the dirty things in the basket!!!!

I was on the road today delivering chickens and just made arrangements to deliver some more tomorrow. I am such a gluten for punishment. But at least I am selling some of my excess ...at a loss I am sure, but the more I sell the less I feed.

Wow, where is everybody lately? It's been kind of dead here. Today the weather just kind of went south. It was pretty decent in the morning & then this afternoon it got really cloudy & cooler. I guess the front came in earlier than I thought it was going to. I hope all of my hatching eggs get here before Friday because they're predicting freezing rain. Ugh, I hate to see that junk coming again, I'm so done with this winter! I sure hope my young RIR chicks out there in the small pen in the run make it through this cold snap. They're 7 weeks old this week & fully feathered so I think they should be OK. I can always take a heat lamp out there if I feel like they need it.

Trish you'd better watch your porch for eggs. It's miserable out there. It's only 22 here right now and they are predicting snow today. I'm dreading getting out but need to go count and catch a number of chickens then deliver them south of here about 35 miles. I'm trying to coffee up before I venture out. Not looking forward to chicken wrangling in the cold at all.
I was on the road yesterday with birds as well. I had a buyer from Ohio meet me in KC. She is so impressed she wrote this morning wanting more. Yay!
Slowly I am getting some numbers down. I'm afraid the cold weather will put a stop to it for a while now though.
Have I said I hate cold weather?

I wish I could afford to move to a milder climate but that won't happen. I guess I'll just keep complaining.
I still have pens to get separated and birds to separate by breed, but I'm not wanting to do it in this weather. DH was working on a little house he had an idea for but because he had to stop and work on my clothes dryer yesterday it didn't get done. That is postponing separating another group I needed to get done. If the darned roosters would be nice to each other I would have plenty of room. Dumb birds. I still have to sell some more of them but I am slowly getting there.
He goes into long hours and straight night shift next week for a couple months so my help will be gone. I really hate that it is falling during my busiest season. And of course too many projects are on hold. I have a plan in my mind to build a couple of coops myself so I guess if the weather warms and I go get some lumber maybe it will get done eventually. Patience has never been one of my virtues.

It is interesting that you mention that... I mixed 3-4 drops of lavender oil in with about 2 teaspoons of olive oil and then rubbed the mixture on the bottoms of his feet. It didn't really seem to help (noticeably) though. I might try it again tonight and make sure that he naps well today. My lavender oil isn't aura cacia brand. It is the NOW brand, but I am looking into getting a better quality brand as soon as I decide what all EOs I want to order.

Lol! It is ironic that you had problems with your dryer. I had problems with my washer late last week. I went to start a load of laundry and the washer wouldn't start running water when I turned it on... I called my husband and he was able to troubleshoot it over the phone for me. It turns out that we have one of those outlets that has a breaker built in (what are those called again???) Anyway, the breaker in the outlet flipped, and fixing the washer was as easy as pulling things out from the wall so I could get to the outlet and press the "reset" button on the outlet... Ironically enough, the light for the room was on the same circuit and wasn't working at the same time. THerefore, I had to go get a flashlight so I could see what I was doing while I was crawling around behind the washer. :)

My DH saw a coyote yesterday not far from the house (not in the yard this time, though). Ironically, I wasn't real far from the coyote and never saw him. He was down wind from me and was uphill in a direction I rarely look. I was on my way back to the house after walking out to the pasture to bring the horses down. I had one horse haltered and was leading him back while the other horse was following behind. The dog was running around with us as well, and as far as I can tell, no one saw the coyote but my DH. If the dog had seen him, I'm sure the dog would've taken chase. My DH thinks the coyote is the same one that I saw last week (the super skinny, mangy coyote I posted a pic of). Anyway, after having seen him twice now during the day, I've decided to keep my birds locked up for a while until we can be relatively sure that the coyote isn't around anymore. I also think I need to start keeping a gun close at hand when I'm out with my son. I want to be able to protect myself if that coyote decides he's hungry enough to attack a person. My DH was on his way home and had driven past the house to go get the mail before stopping at the house. When he say the coyote, he whipped the car around and ran into the house to get a gun. Sadly, the coyote was long gone by the time my DH got back outside. I really don't like the idea of having a starving, mangy coyote around the house. It makes me nervous wondering what he might do if he gets desperate/sick enough. My DH said that my picture was deceptive in that the coyote was actually bigger than he looked in the picture. Oh, great, just what I needed, right? My DH said that he thought the coyote was about as big as our 100+ pound lab, but was WAY skinnier and probably a bit taller. That's definitely enough to make me nervous!
