Another beautiful day. I did a little cleaning on the pen I've got all the cockerels in. Hoping to take them to Yoder on Friday. Anybody need any EE, BLR Wyandottes, or BC Marans roosters? :/ My girls still aren't laying regular, didn't get a Marans egg today or a turkey egg. Here is a pic of her in her nest box

She is just so stinking cute and spoiled.
Sharol congrats on getting your dog re-homed.
HE Chicken, anymore baby lambs?

I know our TSC has birds that live up in the rafters...maybe that is what it was? I went in a few weeks ago and could hear them but thought it was way to early for chicks. I saw on facebook today, on a lady I follow that has chickens, she took her chick box with her "just in case!"

I am glad that Blue dog was able to quickly find a home, we are starting the process again of finding a new puppy. We lost Douglas, our yorkie on Valentine's day. Our 6 year old was playing in the backyard and forgot to latch the gate. He got hit by a car a block over. We only had 3 short years with him and even though we have another dog, nothing is the same without a little lap dog to hang out with you! Good luck with the training!
I'm sorry about your little dog, that's so hard. I don't know what I would do without the two little ones we have, they're really company & entertainment for me.

cleansquared, I sent you a text & just in case you don't get that I'll send you a PM as well.

OQB I will be a Yoder on Friday as well, I don't think I'll be staying for the auction though, I'm going there to meet up with the lady I'm getting my peahens from to pick them up.

Sorry if I forget anyone's comments - was reading earlier and forgot to multi them….

Ashncarson sorry for the loss of your dog. I hope you are able to find one you like.

OQB, tweety and others who asked about the lambs….no new lambs as of yet. I have one more ewe who is pregnant. She is large but not showing any imminent signs of delivery so I think it will be a few more days at least and possibly even a week or two. Since she is already larger than either of the other two were on the day they delivered, it wouldn't surprise me if she has twins.

I turned the new mothers and lambs out with the rest of the flock yesterday and it went perfectly. The ram showed no interest in mounting the ewes this time like he did immediately after the first lamb's birth, and the rest of the flock was tolerant of the lambs. They took the new little ones out to the far end of the pasture and it was fun watching them through the binoculars and seeing the lambs frolicking and playing in their new real estate. I didn't realize it until then, but I guess the rest of the flock didn't want to get too far from the ewes in the nursery so they had not been going out very far for the last week or two. They seemed to really enjoy having the "freedom" to traverse the whole pasture again, now that no one is being left behind. I bet the lambs slept well last night after traveling so far and playing so hard! Interestingly, the mothers and lambs returned to the nursery last night, while the rest of the flock stayed outside of it, even though the gate was wide open. I was gone until late but when I went to check on them close to midnight, all I had to do was close the nursery gate and know that they were safe for the night.

Trish, I have never seen any signs in my ewes or doe that they are in heat, other than the males showing lots of interest in mounting them at that time. Otherwise, I never noticed any changes in their behavior. I think they have some discharge during their heat cycle if you check their vulva.

My RP tom is feeling well enough to mate his hens again! I was so thrilled to turn around the other day and find him getting busy with one of the RP hens. About the same time I saw him, the Bourbon Red tom noticed too, and went running over to put a stop to it. So, yesterday the BR tom and his two hens were segregated into the hoop coop. This way, whenever they do finally start laying, the eggs should be pure.

I suspect my ducks are laying in a hidden nest. I haven't seen an egg from them yet, though last year I got the first eggs on Valentine's Day. But they are also spending less and less time around the coop so I bet they have a nest out by the pond where they are laying. I haven't really cared enough to go looking. I'm almost thinking if they want to lay a clutch out there and sit on them and hatch some ducklings and bring them back to meet me, that is fine by me.

Well, yesterday was beautiful and I could believe it was spring but the wind today is from the north and it is really cold out there! At least there is light at the end of the tunnel now though so I can get excited that spring is on its way.

Hi kind of random but im sick and so im quarenteened in bed where im resting watching u tube videos and saw this and thought how fantastic and cheap it would be on thoes days where its over 100 and if you do solar like this guy no power needed...can you tell im ready for spring? Lol

I went into Orshlen's (sp?) in Topeka today, and they have all the display cases ready to go for baby chicks and the signs up about breeds available. I swear they were playing cheeping noises through the PA system. There didn't appear to be a chick in sight, but you could hear cheeping. There was another lady in there walking all around the chick displays looking for the source of the sound.
I know there are wild birds, mostly sparrows that live in both of the Orschlen's I go to, Topeka and Ottawa. More than once I went searching for baby chicks out of season in there.
Marlena (the broody BO that hatched the two Marans pullets) has been what my ex-mother-in-law would call "dumpy" for a week. She hangs out in the coop on the roost most of the day. She was out for a while today, but her comb isn't dark and she just doesn't look quite right to me. She is still mothering those pullets, too. Today I w her take on another hen that was pushing one of them around. She is such a good mother. She laid a few eggs when they all joined the flock, but not much from her since. I'm afraid she might be egg bound, but I can't feel any swelling below her vent.
Doesn't sound good. Have you tried just letting her soak in a warm bath for 30 minutes or so? She could have some kind of internal infection going on as well. I know you are very attached to her. I hope she pulls through.
Our dog situation is simplified. The Blue dog was transferred to Wayside Waifs in KC, and adopted within 6 hours of being put on the list. The red dog (Red Rover) is much calmer without his brother here, and is getting along much better with the cats. We are working on STAY and COME.

So much for the update.
Sharol that's great about Blue. You should feel so good that you rescued him and got him so he was adoptable. You totally saved his life and gave him a future.
Oh I so hear you on the baby chicks front. Went to Atwoids and they have everything all setupnto have baby chicks. I must not go there too often starting next week. I think they got them the last week of February last year.

So glad your blue dog was adopted out so fast. Even better news that your red dog is getting along with the cat. A little bit of dog treats go a long way during training. I know mine did very well learning the commands once I showed tgem the "motivation". LOL.

I have 2 young roosters that none of my hens like. They have no ...ummmm... bedside manners. LOL. If they don't learn to treat the hens nicely, they will end up in the crockpot soon.
Umm! Fresh chicken! I have several extra roos that will go to the cook pot. I have many more I hope to get sold soon. I had someone contact me about some roos that they buy cheap and give to a poor family. I have a group from my red stars that need to go. Perfect place for them.

It does sound like you have spoiled chickens. I have way too many birds to feed them a mixture like that, I would love to, but I would be bankrupt trying to pay for all of that for mine.
tweety I'm glad you got to stop in, we miss you since you've been so busy with work. Yes I'm trying to be very careful when I go out, in fact I'm probably way more careful than I've ever been in my life these days. My leg still isn't totally healed yet, so there are things I just can't do yet, I'm not doing all of my chicken chores yet. I'm doing a few things but not the whole gamut yet. I kind of helped out with a few things today when my DH was out there. I will need to clean coops as soon as my leg is healed as well, that is quite a chore, especially cleaning out the main coop, that is a job for a day in itself, sometimes two. If you need any chicks let me know tweety, I'm starting to hatch some of the breeds I have laying now & am still waiting on some others to start.

I did put some eggs of about 4 different breeds in the incubator today. I wish more of them would get with it, but I guess they will in time. I have to keep remembering it's still February & we'll probably still have some cold days yet. It's been really nice lately but I heard it's supposed to get colder again, ugh.

Oh HEChicken how do the goats act when they're in their heat cycle, I haven't read up on that. Today I let the goats out & Penny wouldn't stop jumping up & butting my GPs. Jasmine ran off up the hill because she got upset about it & Lily just got mad. Those horns hurt! She would growl & bite at Penny & she would just turn around & come at her again. I finally had to put them back in their pen because she wouldn't behave herself.
Trish, when my goats were in heat they would actually mount each other or mount the buck. Sounds like your girl is just maturing and trying to entertain herself. One of my goats used to butt Marshmallow and she would grab her by the horns and jerk her around. I swear I used to think one of them would for sure kill the other one. But they were inseparable. That goat went everywhere with that dog.

Aw I'm glad she is getting along well. I hope the other one warms up to you as well.

AshnCarson so sorry you lost your dog. I had one dog hit when she came running to me from across a field. It was 40 years ago and I still have nightmares about that.
I have a 17 year old cat that is probably at the end of life. I think she is going into renal failure. She has a big oozing tumor on one side that has been there a number of years and finally burst open a couple months ago. Since them it oozes fluid. Pretty gross. She has dermatitis and has most of her hair chewed out of her back end. She gets steroid shots to ease the itching but it didn't seem to help the last time. Now she has started urinating where ever she is instead of using the cat box. I can't handle that. I had one cat many years ago that never had a cat box until his last 6 months and suddenly went out of control. He died a very sad death with a brain tumor. I think the humane thing to do with my cat is to have her put to sleep at this point but my DH doesn't want to do that. I lost two other very old cats in the past year and half. I just don't like seeing her suffer and I think she is probably beyond helping at this point.
I get way too attached to my pets but after watching the other two suffer I just can't handle watching her decline like this. My cats seem to outlast their natural life cycles.
I wish my chickens did!!!
I worked so hard yesterday. Today it is so cold out and I hurt all over. I just don't feel like getting out there and working. It took me all morning to answer messages about birds I have for sale. Unfortunately no one has shown up with money in hand yet. I suppose I'd better go out and feed and water.

Hi everyone! I'm new here and looking forward to learning lots from y'all. I am hoping to finish my coop and get some layers very soon.
Welcome! Yeah it seems the largest part of our group are in the Wichita area. Good for them ...bad for me.

I could sell them more birds if they were closer!!
So are you going to start with baby chicks or are you going to start with ready to lay birds? Feel free to jump into our conversations which are not limited to just chickens. We talk about anything.
Are you wanting mixed birds, hatchery birds, or good quality stock. Every one has different preferences. I have some nothing mixed mutts and some very expensive imported birds so I am on both sides of the fence.
I've been out feeding and watering. There was a marked difference in the amount of eggs today. These girls DO NOT like cool weather.
I did however get my second white peafowl egg today!
wee.gif

And my albino midget white turkey laid an egg. Poor girl has never been bred and wouldn't be able to raise chicks but she is such a sweetheart. I saved back one midget Tom from last year and I may let him have a congugal visit just once. If he scares her though it won't happen again. I never ate any of her eggs last year but I think I probably will this year.
I've got to get busy making some chicken saddles. I just don't feel like sewing although that is a simple project.
