Consolidated Kansas

Well so far so good I have about six blue eggs saved from last sunday or saturday when ever I talked to trish. & lots of bard rock/legbar mixes they should lay green eggs we will see...

Two days ago, DH and I had an appointment to take our calves to the vet to get castrated and get their vaccinations. It took us more than two hours to get them loaded into the trailer. The smaller one was determined to do anything EXCEPT what we wanted him to do. We FINALLY got him to go in by building an alleyway out of some woven fencing we had laying around. He had been so used to getting around us (FAST little stinker) that he tried it even after we put the temporary fence up. He BOUNCED off of it! LOL!

That was somewhat satisfying after all the work we'd been through trying to get him to load into the trailer. By the time we were ready to leave, we were running late. When we were FINALLY on our way to the vet's office, I realize that I had forgotten to lock the birds up in my hurry to leave.

Thankfully, they were all present and accounted for (and healthy) when we got back a couple hours later.

Then, yesterday, I walked out to the pasture to get the horses, just like I do pretty much every evening. I had JUST seen them at the top of the hill not too far from the house. By the time I got out there, they were nowhere in sight. I figured they had gone out to their favorite spot at the other end of the pasture, roughly half a mile from the house. I got out there and still no horses in sight! I walked around the whole pasture looking for them, carrying my son in my Moby wrap the whole way. I finally found the horses in the barn lot, hiding behind the tree line where I couldn't see them from the house. Go figure!

I guess that is better than them running around the countryside loose or something...

I've been really busy today trying to get caught up on a lot of things. I've been moving birds all afternoon. The birds went crazy and I had more eggs today than I have for months. I got my partridge brahmas all separated and moved to one pen. I had to put peepers on a couple of roosters who wanted to kill each other. I separated out a bunch of roosters and have many more birds to move tomorrow. At least I have an idea of what is out there now so I can try to sell some excess birds.
Looks like I am going to have to have a major rooster sale!!!
And the best news of all.
I got my first peafowl egg of the year today!!!

It came out of my pen of white peafowl. I'm so happy!!!
I've still got a ton of birds to move and separate but I feel pretty good about it all. I got my show sussex moved to the hoop coop where I used to keep my original partridge brahmas. I plan to shut up the birds tonight, then tomorrow I can move the other sussex girls in there.

Just let me know when you want to meet up for me to get the eggs, send me a PM.

Congrats Danz on the peafowl egg, especially a white one! I can't wait to get my two new peahens next Friday. My peacock will be so happy! He's just starting to get his pretty tail in. He won't have to hang out with just turkey hens any more.

lizzy, it sounds like you had quite an ordeal with your calves & then your horses. I'm glad you found the horses safe & sound.

I went out this afternoon & made a roost for my new pen out of a tree limb. I didn't have any more wood here to use, so I figured they would like the limb just as well. I had to fight with the darned thing to get all of the small limbs cut off, it's a piece of a hedge tree I cut off & that stuff is so hard. I finally wrestled it up to the pen & got it in there & then had to cut one end to fit in the chainlink. They were trying to get on it while I was putting it up, so I think they will like it. I have a tree limb in my turkey pen that they have always used & they really like it. Those birds should be set now, all I need now is for them to lay.

I hope my hens get busy laying again, they just have taken a real vacation the last week. It's time to get busy girls!

I am so far behind, I've been trying to limit my computer time, but I have taken some quick peeks.
Trish, congratulations on the grandson and not needing knee surgery. This colder weather will maybe help slow you down so you will take care of yourself. Very anxious for a pic of the fluffy butts.
Speaking of fluffy butts, you all talking abouts chicks and incubators got KKB all excited and he fired ours up with some turkey eggs and mutts. We candled them last night and 5 of the turkey eggs look to be good. Danz you will never believe where the little turkey girl has decided to lay her eggs, in the cab of the loader. They made their escape earlier in the week but have integrated into the flock nicely, after the RP tom established himself as head tom.
Danz, yuk on all the dental work you are having done. I have always been terrified of the dentist. Yahoo on the chicks arriving and getting settled in safely and on getting rid of some birds, moving birds, cleaning coops and building things. Congratulations on the Pea egg! So jealous.
HE Chicken, congrats on those cute little lambs. You now have hours of entertainment in your backyard.
We got our first Marans egg yesterday and one today. Yesterday's egg was bigger than the one today but they have to be from a pullet.
400

The other hens haven't really picked it up yet. Had an egg from one of the original wild chicks. Still have 4 others that should start laying. The turkeys have been strutting for quite awhile but neither Bronze hen has laid an egg. I would like to sell both of the Bronze toms and just have the RP tom.
Sure have enjoyed this weather, gonna hate to see the cold temps come back.

OQB the Marans chicks are 3 weeks old now & getting big but I still can't tell sexes yet. Maybe another week or so & they will start developing their combs. I sure don't want to keep this many & they're sucking down the food, so some of them will need to go. I also have extra Speckled Sussex chicks if anyone is interested in those, they're from a breeder like the Marans are, not hatchery. I haven't gotten a good count yet on the SS to know how many extras I will have for sale. Send me a PM if you're interested.

That's an interesting place your turkey hen decided to use for a nest. My turkeys aren't laying & of course it won't do them any good if they do because I don't have a tom now. Is anybody interested in 3 Royal Palm turkey hens? I need to sell them to make room for the peafowl in that pen.

Awesome chicken danz

how big are their eggs?

This egg wasn't so large but later in the season the eggs get huge. About the size of a goose egg if you've ever seen those.
I knew the peas were practicing but didn't expect any eggs for at least another month. My white boy is just gorgeous. He has his first really full train. He should be old enough to be fertile this year.
I doubt this egg is fertile. It seems to take them awhile to get the parts all working right. I rushed out and put a nest in there which I hadn't even thought of doing quite yet.
OQB I'm still not able to chew yet due to the swelling from the dental work. It's sure messing with my digestive system. I hate dentists too,but other than actually having the dental work done I really like this guy. It's a matter of telling myself it will be better. I sure hope cause I've had many years of dental work disappointments.
Silly turkey! I wonder when the second one will start laying again.
I still have a ton of birds to move around today. I'd like to get a bunch of that done. I need to take some pictures and get some of these roosters advertised as well.
I had a large group of chicks hatch and I am really confused as to what all I have. I know I have two white cochin chicks. Wish I'd known for a fact that is what they were when I sold the adults this week. They were in a mixed pen but obviously pure bred. I have some white orpingtons, a couple barred rocks and several from my different mixed pens. I may have one pure English splash in there which would be awesome. Time will tell I guess. I am sure there are some other mixed ones. I am just disgusted that I even did test hatches when I had mixed pens now. That means growing out a bunch of chicks just to be sure what I have. I have several more eggs to hatch in the next couple weeks that will be the same thing.

It would be different if I had room to grow them but I really don't. I've got to start hatching birds to sell and that means a bunch of food and space. No room for maybe birds.
Oh well I should know for sure in a few weeks. I may be really lucky in the long run.I have a ton of eggs I need to get set in the incubator. I just need to get them ready and get them in there.
