Danz good luck with the dental work, I hope it goes well & you're not in pain.

HEChicken I hope your last ewe has another ewe lamb for you now that you got lambchop.

It's really windy here this morning, I think the last I looked the temp was 46 here. They predicted a 40% chance of rain for today, I'm not looking forward to the mud if it does. It had dried out enough that I wasn't so concerned about slipping, but if it rains it will get worse again.

I have never had any problems with my other two cats bothering chicks in the house & now my new cat Coco is showing way too much interest in them. She has been getting up on the brooders & watching the smaller chicks & I've had to get after her several times already. Night before last she knocked the top into the brooder jumping on it in the middle of the night. I sure hope she gets the message & stops this nonsense or she's going to end up outside after all. I really don't want for that to happen, but I won't tolerate her going after my chicks either. She is attracted by their loud peeping, I know that's what got her attention. When they're quiet she doesn't pay that much attention to them.

Chick TV!!! Our outside cat was always fascinated by the chicks. When he lived inside, he would sit and watch them for hours. Now that he lives in the 3-season room and that's where I brooded chicks last year, he still got to watch them. I have to have a very secure top on the brooder but as long as I feel they're safe, I get a big kick out of watching him watch them! It will be interesting to see how our new inside cat reacts to chicks - she hasn't see any yet.

Well, I just went out to do morning chores and it was down to 38 when I went outside. That is a huge drop from 55 when I went out at 6:30 to check on everyone. There was no wind then either and now it is howling.

I just checked the last ewe and she is still huge but still hasn't developed an udder. At this point I hope its twins because if not its a really huge single and then I feel sorry for her having to pass it. I've been handling the lambs while their mums eat their grain to get them to (hopefully) be calm about handling when they are older. It looks like the little ewe is a hair sheep while the ram is a wool sheep. I find that fascinating since both of their mums are full dorset (wool) and they both have the same father. I talked to the original breeder of the ram yesterday and learned that he is Sussex/Romonov X. I was familiar with Sussex but not Romanov, so I had to research that. Sussex are wool but Romanov are hair sheep from Russia known for having "litters". I.e., they frequently lamb 4-6 at a time. My little lambs are only ¼ Romanov so the odds of getting a hair sheep were low, and needless to say I'm thrilled with my little ewe lamb. Since the ram lamb won't live past a year and won't need to be sheared, I don't care that he's a wool sheep. And, hopefully when it comes to lambing, the little ewe lamb won't have a litter. I'll settle for twins but worry about any more than that being so small they will struggle if its cold when they're born and/or the ewe will need assistance delivery due to entanglements.

I'm back home after nearly 3 hours of dental work. He worked on 6 teeth and pulled two of those. I am still trying to get the bleeding stopped. I do have a temporary on that I will wear until the end of March when they do more work. There was so much to be done he wants it to heal quite a while. The dentist gave me a couple more shots before I left because the feeling was coming back in. I can tell this is going to be very sore and painful for a couple days.
My chicks all came and DH did a great job of getting them settled in the brooder house.
When I left this morning it was 57 degrees. Actually warmer than it got all day yesterday. It's now down to 32 and snowing. Sure glad I had an early appointment. They said on the weather that it was slick West of Topeka already.
I think I'm going to go lay down and see if I can get to feeling better.

Ouch that all sounds painful Danz, I hope you feel better soon.

We went to Wichita for most of the day to shop & run some errands & got back barely in time for my DH to grab his supper & take off for work. It was really windy & cold when we left & then by the time we got back the sun had come out & it was warmer again, weird. It was just grey outside this morning & not nice at all, now the sky is blue & while it's still a little windy, it's not bad out there. My breeder birds have started up laying again except for the lavender Orps & the lavender Ameraucanas, kind of weird huh that two breeds of the same color haven't started laying or started back up yet. My laying flock is a different story, it has been 4 days now since I got many eggs at all from them, it seems like they're taking another break for some reason. I don't know if they're gearing up to lay their little hearts out in the spring or what. I got 2 eggs yesterday & today from about 25 hens. Some of them laid pretty well through all of that cold weather & now that it's warmer they're taking a break.

I'm so sorry you have these problems with your teeth. Novocaine always makes me feel lousy for days. I hope you can throw it off and feel better soon.

Sharol, Novocaine makes me sick as well. The dentist used two kinds of deadener and I was glad. I wish it was still working!!!

I had also made it a point to get up and eat some hot cereal for breakfast and take some stomach medicine I usually only take at night. I'm glad I did because I wasn't feeling well at all. Here it is 7:00Pm and I am still fighting bleeding. I did spend most of the afternoon sleeping though. Not my normal for sure.
I just keep telling myself this is going to be such an improvement that it will be worth it. The tooth that broke had an infection at the end of the and he told me I would have lost it anyway, and it probably saved me a lot of pain and sickness to get it out.
I hate going to the dentist as well. It's on my list of my least favorite things I have to do. I don't like anyone messing with my mouth, nose, or eyes. Those are my off limit places.
I would much rather have been out watching my new chicks that arrived today!!!
They all arrived in good shape and they all seem to be doing well. I'm going to be like a mother hen the next couple weeks worrying about my new babies. It's like I got a whole new flock out there. Wish me luck that they all make it and do really well.

So wished ;-)

Glad he gave you some decent drugs, and I hope it eases quickly. I hate having my mouth worked on. I don't even like to have my teeth cleaned.

It is good you have the new chicks to distract you.

I think tomorrow I have several eggs due to hatch. Whoops! Are they eggs or chicks at this point? Anyway I'm not sure what all I have in there or how many there is. I've just been throwing the eggs in about once a week from the desirable birds. I have some from a mixed pen in there that will hatch at some point. So they will either be brahmas or Orpingtons or a combination of each. It would be too much to wish they wouldn't be mixed at all! I guess they'll be meat or potential layers if their mixed.
I've been so excited about all these English chicks coming that I really haven't focused much on my own birds.

Well I peaked this morning already and there's a bunch of chicks in the incubator. It looked like a lot of dark ones so I may have several mixed birds in there. I don't remember setting very many Barred rocks and they are about the only dark birds I have ...other than the orps that were in the mixed pen.
Maybe I'll have the sense to just sell some of these while they are young. I try not to raise mixed breeds other than for layers only. I still have a few more to hatch then I'll check them all out. I'm out of room to put them though with all these chicks I had shipped!!!
I haven't had any takers on these turkey poults yet. If I could get them sold I'd at least have one more bin to brood in.

Danz I'm so glad your chicks arrived healthy, I know how excited you've been to get them. I'm glad you're feeling better today too.

I need to clean out the brooder with the biggest chicks & try to see if I can tell what I have in there with these Marans yet. They may still be too young, but I did notice some of them are getting a little bit bigger combs. I was looking at my little Wheaten Ameraucanas & I'm pretty sure I have 3 pullets & two cockerels in there. I will know for sure when they start feathering out more. That's one breed & color you can tell sexes on really early since the hens & roosters have totally different coloring. That's really kind of nice to be able to sex them so early. Wouldn't it be nice if all the breeds were like that so we didn't have to guess or wait till they're mostly grown.
