Consolidated Kansas

Wouldn't you know it. I unsubscribed to the broody thread on Wednesday. Now one of my pullets is in a nest box where she has been since Thursday morning. Sigh. I don't need babies. I think I'll give her a few eggs, though, and see if she sticks. In a few days I'll be able to tell if they are developing.

I suppose if they don't, I can get her a couple of pullets from Bluestem or Orshlen's when they get chicks in a couple/three weeks. I REALLY wasn't going to do this this summer.

Now I have to get serious about finding my lost black flashlight that I used to candle eggs.

Sharol you can always sell the chicks. ....unless you get too attached!!!
I've been on the phone a bunch this morning. Must be the warmer forecast. People are starting to want to buy birds.

I am sitting here getting caught up on posts and KKB says, "do I have 4 egg turners or just 3"? "I don't know", I answered, "I never had one". "Well, I think I have another one somewhere, I'll go look." "For why?", I ask, "when are you going to stop hatching chicks?" His answer, "when the hens quit laying". :th

LOL! He thinks like I think!!!
Wow! what a busy day it was here. I spent all day just working on pens and stuff and moving some chicks around. I sent DH after some straw which he got right away! Yay! But he is a city boy. He brought back two bales of straw and two bales of hay. I got some more straw in the goose shelters and the peafowl pens. Then I took the hay and put it in nest boxes. They'll have it all kicked out soon anyway. Then I went around and put some flakes here and there in the different chicken pens. They were all enjoying scratching through it. I put the rest of a bale of hay in the duck houses and they spent the entire rest of the afternoon in a state of excitement. You'd have thought it was duck Christmas. Maybe they'll lay where they're supposed to now.
I got my bands in the mail and got all the English orp babies marked and got the ones that have already had mereks vaccine marked as well. Then I moved the chicks I had inside to a raised brooder in the brooder house. I marked the BBS brahma chicks I had in that bunch with another color band.
Then I emptied the incubator. I marked the Araucana chicks with another color. I need to make a master list so I can remember what means what on which leg. They aren't permanent but it will help me when I sell chicks or separate them.
I had lots of phone calls from people interested in buying birds. I got a couple sales lined up for tomorrow.
I had a really good hatch today and have just a few more that need to finish. I hope they all live. I had one that had a bit of unabsorbed yolk but it's still in the incubator so I hope it does okay.
I am a bit disgusted with one person. I make sure I put serious inquiries only please in any thing I advertise. I had a guy send me an email yesterday and ask me to call him. I did. He was interested in an English Orpington roo I had for sale. I told him exactly what I would take as a bottom dollar on him. Then he texted and asked if I would take pictures and send them to his phone. I never use my phone to take pictures. So I go out and spend a bit of time trying to get a couple of decent shots of the bird, then more time trying to figure out how to send them. I use a phone for a phone, not for media. I never heard from him. So today I texted and asked if he got the pictures. He wrote back and said yes but the price was over his budget. He knew all along what the price was. It's about 1/4th of the going price for a young mature English rooster. Why the *#$% did the guy ask me to take the pictures if he thought the bird was over budget? Do people really think I have nothing to do but to go out and take pictures for their entertainment??
That is why I very rarely ever advertise birds for sale. I prefer people to contact me when they need something. I don't have time to sit on the phone or computer all day if they are just wasting time.
Okay I'll get off my high horse. I just can't keep up with myself sometimes and these people waste time I could use better.
On the other hand I love discussing birds and love dealing with people who are serious about them.

Wow Danz- what did you put in your coffee ? and can I have some. Sounds like you got a lot done. I have three days next week that I can try to get something done, after that its spring break .
The chickens sure are enjoying the warmer temps , they're nibbling off every little shoot of grass they can find.

Well it was kind of a long evening for me, I made a trip to pick up a rabbit I needed for my breeding stock & it was a long tedious trip. I've gone on 3 such trips in the last week, one for peahens, one for SL Wyandotte hens, & this one for the rabbit. I'm done traveling to pick up things for awhile. Anyone who asks me to deliver something to them may get their head bitten off. I go where I have to go to get what I'm looking for & I expect other people to do the same. If I happen to be coming their way I don't mind bringing something, but I'm not going to make a trip for one bird. I'm done with my soapbox now.

I can't wait for this nasty day to be over tomorrow so we can have some nicer weather, I'm so ready.

Danz, I empathize with your frustration, believe me.

I've a huge list of veggies I want to plant this year since I haven't had a garden for the last 2 yrs due to the move and what not. So lets hope that Spring is upon us VERY SOON! I also have a few house projects that need done as well since the house is old and the previous owners didn't really do a good job on maintaining it. I will also be visiting family for a couple of weeks in the Summer so this will put some of my projects on hold until I get back. Lets see how many projects I can cross off the list this year.

I got all excited about temperatures in the 50s today! So nice.

We got an extra garden plot this year in the community garden, so we'll have three 25x25 plots that we share with my aunt, plus I plant the leafy greens at home, and have some asparagus here. We decided to get the extra plot so we'd be able to plant a lot more peas, green beans, wax beans, and beets. We like to can those, but didn't have nearly enough last year. Now I'm so exhausted (haven't been sleeping well for the last two weeks) that I'm wondering if I'll be sorry.

I hope tomorrow's a better day!

Danz, I feel your frustration. When I was in business and times were slim I used to work by myself during the days and had employees come in for the evening shift so I could have some family time. I needed to do the store ordering, pay bills, payroll, everything in the office as well as wait on customers. At times I really didn't want customers coming in so I could get the office things done.

Then I would have guys come in and after greeting them ask them what I could do for them. Their reply, 'Oh nothing, just wasting some time', what they didn't realize is that it was MY time they were wasting when I could have been getting things done.

Looking for a chicken sitter in my area. Is there anyone in the kansas city metro (I'm in Merriam) who might be willing to watch my chickens if I left town?

Need someone to feed, water, let out in am, lock up in pm and take any eggs.

samjo06 welcome to our group. I'm not close enough but there are a couple that live up that direction....not sure how close they are to you though.
I think a lot of these people that have a half dozen chickens don't realize how much time it takes when you have lots of birds and lots of pens. But I have had people that call under the pretense of wanting stuff then proceed to call back over and over and talk about everything but birds. Those are the ones that really drive me nuts.
The other thing that drives me insane is time. If you set an appointment time be there!! I can understand mishaps and as much as a 30 minute window if you don't know your way. But I don't have time to sit around and wait on someone for hours who shows up 5-6 hours late or doesn't call until the next day or two or not at all. I have adopted a policy of appointment only. And if you miss it forget it. I am trying to maintain a closed farm but when I have lots to get sold I do allow people to show up.... I just don't let them in pens or houses.
I'm waiting right now to hear from a guy who planned to come down this morning. I didn't pin point a time and if he takes a while it's okay cause I don't do mornings well anyway.
