I understand Danz I will contact them. Thank you for your suggestion. I'm looking into standard Cochin they are beautiful. I have a bantan Cochin roo I call him Buddy he falls me around outside and we I try leave in the van he stays in front so can't leave

I agree with Danz michelleml, Hospice can be very helpful & can do a lot for you. When my late husband got to the point of being terminal they were there helping me care for him. I know it's very overwheliming to you & your children. I'm sorry your husband isn't getting better. I'll keep you & your family in my prayers.

Welcome Carla Hayes, you are in for some fun with chickens! We're all addicted here, chicken math is very hard to overcome. Tell us about your plans with the chickens, do you have a coop for them?

It's supposed to be a high of 61 today & 60s here all week, I'll take that. Yesterday wasn't as bad as they predicted thank goodness. It was chilly & windy but it could have been worse. I'm hoping we have seen the last of winter. The trees here are starting to bud out & things are coming up out of the ground, my daylilies are really starting to grow. It's so nice to see a few green things after such a long, nasty winter. I can't wait for the grass, at least what's left of the grass to get green. We lost a lot of the grass in the yard during the drought, so there are big patches of just dirt now in the yard. One of the biggest areas is on the hill where I fell & it just gets to be a slick muddy mess when it rains. The chickens are enjoying the warmer days even if there isn't much out there to eat yet. They still go dig through things to look anyway.

3.gold laced Wyandotte--yep!
4. Possibly a barred rock. Hard to tell from that angle. Could be another SLW or about any spangled bird. --Its another SLW!
5. Possibly a cochin (or if these are bantam the little guy on the basket could be a mille fleur d'uclle missing a muff)--suppose to be a mille fleur duccle
6.white crested black polish--yep!
7.Not sure...the feather color threw me and I can't see the legs or comb. Looks like it has a muff so I'll say d'uccle. --It's an Easter egger
8.Wellsummer--yep!


I also have a barred rock, a rir, a buff orpington, a black sex link and more SLW & GLW...quite the mixed flock! I will post coop pics soon.

I did pretty good I think. Basically missed one or one and a half. Easter eggers can look like anything so that is my save!!! LOL
Yeah Trish we didn't have any grass at all after the drought and out back where the chickens roam the most there still isn't any.

Danz, you did really well on naming the chick breeds. Yes Easter Eggers can look like anything, so unless you can see the muffs it's hard.

Sorry for the delay getting back to everyone, very, very, very slow internet yesterday and had to go out and try to figure out how many birds I had of certain types after DH let them out to free range!! Hahahaha!

My DH and I just finished putting an entryway bench together. I have been wanting an entryway set (bench + shelf) for quite a while now, and we finally bought the supplies on Thursday, started cutting and putting together on Friday and finished the first piece this afternoon! I am so excited!!!! The bench still needs to be sanded and painted, but I was too excited to wait to take pictures... The plans for this bench (and the shelf that goes with it) can be found here. We modified the plans to make the bench narrow (had to fit in a 3' foot wide space). Otherwise, we made no changes.







We visited Orscheln's today, during their "chick days". The little ones are SO CUTE!!! My DH won't let me have any more birds though, without getting rid of some of the ones I already have.

Lizzy, you mean they are for human and not birds?

I also thought you have new nest boxes for the birds.

I came home yesterday to a flood did any one else get crazy swamp like rain the water was wading a foot deep to get to the barn I checked all the corners as I was wooried water was so deep it would come into the dirt floor it did in too corners any one have any suggestions on preventing this in the future our the best way to dry things inside? The water sank in over night so is only standing in isolated pools in the yard but idk if I should wait to put hay back in the corners of the barn till its all dried out? So any suggestions would be helpfull.

Sorry about the flood. Best to let it dry out first to prevent mold... mold is deadly to birds... Do you have some plywood you can lay on top to then lay the hays down if you really need to put hays back in right away? Just raise it high enough with some bricks or what not then put hays on so it doesn't absorb moisture.

Hi fellow Kansans!

I'm 3 weeks into raising chickens and so far I'm loving every minute! I'm just outside of Topeka on 1 acre and hurrying to finish our coop so the chicks can move outside soon. They are growing super fast! I got my chicks from Heartland Hatchery when they came to topeka. Here are some of my chickies:











and I added a few more (they are 3 days old now): Right now I have the new babies in a separate brooder. Can I mix them in with my 3 week olds?

Beautiful chicks you got there. Chicken math is hard to get rid of. Once you got bit, you are in for it! BTW, welcome to the Kansas forum. We are a bunch of chicken lovers for sure. We also love pictures. The more the better....

Izzy I love the bench but have to admit I also thought nest box.
Dh is out of hospital with 2 -1 weeko visits I'm done seeing a hospital room. He has cellulitis in his foot that will not heal. He does sleep a lot now and is not eating very much anymore maybe 1 meal a day. He says he feels fine but I'm not so sure. All this has taking a toll on our kids my younger two are scared of sleeping alone. My oldest is showing signs of depression sleeping all the time not eating.

I wanted to know if anyone has experience with giant Cochin? Can you tell me about it?

56F as I type right now. Sure is nice outside. The wind is supposed to kick up a few notches in the next day or 2 though but having the temperature in the 60s will help. My chickens are happy out there foraging. So are the ducks. I've plenty of seeds sprouted already so I hope the weather will cooperate once they are ready to go outside.

The boys have been gone for a few days. DH lost his iphone as soon as he got out of the airport so I had to suspend his line. He will need to get another phone once he is back in town. The cheapest way to do so is to add another line and wait till his original line's contract expires (in 3 months) and cancel it. Such a pain. So this means he will have a new number. With his business, switching number is just the pits and Spring is his busy season when customers are calling to schedule landscaping work with him. Sigh...

It was kind of fun looking at the chick pictures. I do my own all the time but I haven't had several of those breeds for awhile.
I had kind of a busy day today. I had to dismantle part of a pen and drag a panel across the yard and work it into one of the chain link pens to make it into two pens. I was planning on using half of it for a breeder pen. But the two BR Tom turkeys were fighting and the young one was getting torn up and bloody. So I had to make some quick shelter and move him to the pen I was setting up. Every time I think I have an open pen or two something else has to get moved into it.
Tweety I know it would be confusing but can't you just buy a new phone with your provider and keep the same number on the current plan? They could discontinue service to the one he lost. I lost one one time and that is what I did.
I also found a hole in the netting on one of the hoop coops. Not sure what happened there but if the dogs didn't notice a predator it could get in there. I meant to put some hardware cloth along the bottom of the pen but ran out of time and energy. Hopefully I'll get it done tomorrow.
I need to find the time to build my new little breeder coop too. I haven't even started on it yet.

Danz I was noticing some places on my pens this afternoon where it looks like something was trying to get in as well, so I have some repair work to do. One of them is my growout pen & I sure don't want nasty critters getting in there.

I had 7 male guineas visit my place this evening, they were wreaking havoc at my guinea pen. They probably were from my neighbor's place down the hill, but some of those may have been mine originally too since some disappeared. At any rate they heard my females in the pen & kept coming up to the pen making a bunch of noise, it was stirring up quite a ruckus with the males in the pen, they didn't like it at all.

My laying flock evidently is liking the warmer weather, I have gotten over a dozen eggs both yesterday & today, it's about time. My ducks are averaging 2 eggs a day now too. I haven't let them out of their pen yet again or set up the pool, I may wait another week or so to do that.
