Consolidated Kansas

My DH and I just finished putting an entryway bench together. I have been wanting an entryway set (bench + shelf) for quite a while now, and we finally bought the supplies on Thursday, started cutting and putting together on Friday and finished the first piece this afternoon! I am so excited!!!! The bench still needs to be sanded and painted, but I was too excited to wait to take pictures... The plans for this bench (and the shelf that goes with it) can be found here. We modified the plans to make the bench narrow (had to fit in a 3' foot wide space). Otherwise, we made no changes.

We visited Orscheln's today, during their "chick days". The little ones are SO CUTE!!! My DH won't let me have any more birds though, without getting rid of some of the ones I already have. :(
That's what we need by our front door, except if we leave shoes on the floor, our big puppy will chew them up. Maybe when he gets a little older.

Had to mention chick days a orscheln's, right?

It seems like the first swap of the year isn't always the best one to attend for the ones that meet regularly. They seem to get going more after that. It's still early for people with hatching after that hard winter we had. I'm just getting started hatching for my chick orders, the first ones have been hatching today. Were you looking for anything in particular Ralph?

I wonder how the Gardner auction is going, has anyone heard from anybody there?

I was out doing my daily chicken chores when a small thunderstorm came in pretty fast. I ended up getting a little wet trying to get finished. It went on through fairly fast but rained again a bit later but only briefly. Thank goodness it was warm out, I'm not looking forward to tomorrow at all.
I didn't have much luck at Gardner this year :-( i think we all endured a harder than most winter and i think that really played a part in it. I do think i saw more pheasants there this year than last and lots of pea's. At least it was a beautiful day weather wise! I did spend 15 bucks on a pretty unique 3 tier wooden bird cage that is just decor. I did not see anyone from this thread but there were other cochin chicken people that i got to catch up with for a bit so that was nice to do.

I wasn't buying. I went to sell . I think all the poultry venders did well. Last fall you couldn't give Muscovy ducks away. Today all mine sold as I was unloading. Today it was a sellers market at Afton.

Back from Gardner and got the new birds settled in. Only had a couple of mishaps, a broken egg in a nest box and a loose brooder chick in the house. FrizzledPink can't believe that we didn't get to meet. I bought the big parrot cage and Danz was sitting there with me so we must have been in the same place at the same time. Had a good visit with Danz as usual and we did meet ZigZag and DW.
We drove thru a brief shower on the way home and the wind is blowing out there. They were predicting snow tomorrow in Gardner but just wind and cooler here.
LizzyGSR, I love that bench it will be very handy. With a shelf above it maybe you won't pile stuff on it so that you can't use it to sit on. :D
JosieChick I am interested in some of your chickens and things. I will PM you about the details.
Ralph congrats on getting things sold. It's always good to lighten the load.
I had to watch the Hendricks vs Lawler MMA fight tonight. My son wrestled Johny Hendricks in YMCA wrestling so I had to cheer for him. And yes he won!
I really need to go to bed. Been away from the birds for 2 days, need to make sure everyone is okay.

I have to sell my chickens for personal reasons and thought I would put it out here first in case anyone is looking for birds. I will make great deals to fellow consolidated Kansas thread friends. :D

I have a bunch of different layers, some blue egg layers, an olive egg layer, black and lavender orps, bantam cochins, buff laced brahma pair, call ducks. I have a small flock of older layers that I will pair with some younger girls and a very sweet bantam roo that will need an excellent, loving home and I am willing to send them for free if you promise to take good care of them and not eat anyone! Send me a PM if you are interested!

I am so saddened to hear you have to sell hour flock. You will be in my prayers. I did send you a message, but I am not sure it went through, as it doesn't show in my inbox. Please let me k ow if yoh did not get it. I have a small flock, but I do have room for a few more, and you could even have visitation rights! Hugs to you, sweetie!!

When I first saw this, my chicken addled brain thought: Ooh, such pretty nest boxes!!

I thought that, too!

Isn't that funny, people who don't have chickens would look at that & see a bench & shelves but we look at it & see nest boxes. I'm always looking at things & thinking now what could I use that for with my chickens. I just found a covered cat litter box someone moving had disgarded in the trash at the curb & picked it up for a nest box. Hey it was free & it can be washed & sanitized.

It's windy here & only 35, ugh I'm not looking forward to going out to do chores today, it's been so darned nice the last few days it's going to be the pits today. The good thing is it's supposed to warm up tomorrow & stay in the 60s I think all week, I'll take that.

So those of you that went to Gardner, how was it? Were there lots of great things there?

Very cute. I've thought multiple times about making something similar. The problem is it would be like the shelf and coat rack I put up a few months ago. DH's coats still end up piled on the floor beneath it!!! Same reason I guess that trash ends up on the counter instead of being dropped in the trash can right below it!!!

Frizzled I looked for you but didn't see you. In fact Honey Bee and I were talking about who was there and wasn't. Gardner was a total bust this spring IMO. If that was typical I probably wouldn't go all the time. It was a much smaller sale than normal, probably a third of last springs. And normally there is some really nice quality birds there. I saw cage after cage of hatchery quality or worse birds. If a person were looking for old English though there were probably 200 cages of them.
The biggest upset came when mid afternoon it looked like the bleachers emptied out. You could kind of feel the rain in the air and the wind changing some. I have a dear friend from Oklahoma that drives 5 hours each direction and spends a fortune coming up to sell his best birds at Gardner. The crowd left about the time his birds came up. He was bringing me a red golden Pheasant cock. Birds identical to ones I sold in the fall for $150 a pair were going as low as $20 a pair. I finally ended up bidding on buying 4 pairs of them just to get the price up a little although it didn't help him much...maybe $5 to $10 more a pair. So I didn't take the pheasant he brought me since now I have 4 males and only need one or two at the very most. He is even considering not coming back because of that. That would be a huge let down. He makes his living on his birds. ...unlike most of us.
I ended up spending 3 times more than I figured on wire to build my goose pen. I only had one bidder bidding against me but he seemed to want it pretty bad. As much as I was buying I still saved about $120 over store price but that wasn't much over all since I bought 600 feet of it. Now I have to come up with some more money to buy posts with. I think wire was the only thing that brought a good price.
I was real tempted to buy a pair of yearling opal peafowl which I really want. Probably the only thing that made me quit bidding was the fact I spent so much on wire!
Even though the auction was a let down I had a good time and got to see and visit many of my friends. I do think the weather was a huge factor. The long brutal winter and what started out as a nice day, then the impending cold front moving in was just too much. I've always thought if they scheduled the sale in April rather than March they would do so much better. Weather seems to always affect it regardless, when they have it the times of year they do.
ZigZag had his little cherubs there for awhile. There were lots of other people that used to post on BYC that no longer do that were there.
For those of you that have been on this forum for quite a while I wanted to tell a story. Do you remember the dark cornish I hatched from the champion Cornish breeder Al Semenario in Oklahoma? Then later I donated him to Hawkeye95 and she named him Mr. Meat? She posted several pictures of him. Then when she was getting ready to move to OKC a guy from South of Tulsa bought him from Hawkeye. He bred him for a while for some show birds and yesterday he brought him back to Kansas with some girls for a previous BYCer, Fat Daddy to breed with. This one big bulky rooster has probably made more home switches between states than any bird I know. Mr. Meat has become quite the celebrity.
We got rain before I got home then the wind came up and we were getting sleet hard enough it woke me up around 4am. Then we got snow on that. Needless to say it's nasty out there today and the wind is blowing like crazy. I just cut open the cages the pheasant were in when I got home cause it was dark out and filled a water pan in the pen. I need to go out I guess and hook up a tank heater for it. I do hope they moved out of the cages before it got cold.
My birds didn't get attention all day so the first thing I did was check on my brooder. I fed the starving babies and gave them some more water. But the hook had somehow gotten knocked off of one of my heaters and fallen in the raised brooder and killed 3 of my imported splash orpington chicks. I lost one a few days ago and only had seven so that leaves me with 3 living birds. Pretty expensive little birds at this point, so I hope the other three make it and at least two of them are hens!!! I need to get out and give some attention to everyone else soon . I'm afraid any eggs I had laid yesterday are toast since it's still freezing out. I hoped my DH would have fed them or something while I was gone but it didn't happen. Since I left before it was light outside it wasn't practical to do it before I left.
