Consolidated Kansas

I get excited about a garden every year but always manage to get half of what I want planted and always get it in late. Wish DH took an interest in these kind of things. But he just doesn't care. He is kind of the convenience foods meat and potatoes kind of guy. Fresh veggies and stuff just don't appeal to him. I on the other hand could live on them. So I eat unhealthy just to keep things simple around here. I had plans to eat really good food during the outage but thanks to the dental work that isn't happening either. Maybe in my next life.......
I got chicks sorted... I hope. I still need to hatch another 5 black orpingtons to fill an order this weekend. Those aren't due to hatch until Sunday so I am hoping they'll pip a little early for me and get hatched before the weekend is over. I really don't want to feed all of these chicks another week.I wish the chickens would lay how many I need at a given time.

Speaking of gardening, I planted seed potatoes in the ground right before it rained the other day. Sure hope they come up ok. This is the first time I've planted seed potatoes. :D

Sharol, can't wait for some chick pics.

Danz, take it easy. This weather will make people sick. My sinus is having problem. I'm sure it's allergy. My husband is having the same issue.

Take care.

Potatoes are usually pretty easy to grow, I used to grow them when I had a bigger garden space. I just can't take care of a big garden any more. I need some small raised beds that are fenced off to keep my goats out, but it probably won't get done this year. I'll be happy if I can just find a way to have a couple of tomato plants without them eating them.

I know it's really going into allergy season & it's kicking my butt already, not a good sign.

yesterday I was looking at all the plants and stuff turning green I was walking around with my three year old showing him different things and we found some strawberry plants we planted last year. He gave them kisses and said prayers for them to grow big and healthy :).

Can anyone share the best way to plant onions and potatoes?

I have been giving the little chick with wry neck poly vi Sol, bit e and crushed selenium and we've seen improvement today she trying to eat now so will keep trying

Michelleml that's great you've kept it alive. It really does surprise me. I always try my hardest to do that but often without success. Of course if I didn't have hundreds of chicks at a time it would help me take care of the ones I have.
Last year I ordered seed potatoes on line and go them really late. I think they almost waited until they had a new crop to send them. They didn't produce a thing, So I think it is pretty important to get them in early while it's still cool. Technically they should be planted on St. Paddys day but rarely have I gotten them in that early. I think it's better to let it get just a little warmer out.
I'm going to try to rig up some auto waterers for my incubators using a single bucket for two units. Dh has to go pick up some stuff so I asked him to look for a list of fittings for me.I hope it works. Seems I spend lots of time just adding water to the bators.

My grandfather was a believer in sign of the moon planting (especially for potatoes and corn), and he always had bumper crops even when his neighbors came up short.

I get my seed potatoes from Bluestem because I have better luck with their seed in general. BTW, it is chick day at Bluestem today. doing the happy dance that I don't have to buy babies for my broody Copper.

  • How to Read the "Planting by the Moon" Gardening Calendar
  • The "Moon Favorable" column gives the best planting dates based on the year's Moon's phases (Eastern Time). See our Moon Phase Calendar for the exact days of the new and full Moons.)
  • Plant vegetables that bear crops above ground during the light, or waxing, of the Moon: from the day the Moon is new to the day it is full. Plant vegetables that bear crops below ground during the dark, or waning, of the Moon: from the day after it is full to the day before it is new again.
  • The "Planting Dates" column gives the safe periods for planting in areas that receive frost. See our Frost Dates Calculator for first/last frost dates and the average length of the growing season in your area (U.S. only).

Cleansquared this is the current planting chart.
My in laws used to always use the Farmers almanac to plant by. I used to try it myself, but after a couple years of having the worst crops ever I quit using it. I do believe the phase of the moon has a lot to do with life in general. Hatching chicks is one of those things. Gardening though didn't work out very well for me. But weather and other conditions always play into it as well. So I can't definitively say it was wrong. The worst problem I have planting this way is spending that many days in the garden. Usually I get out and plant early crops, then get out later and plant late crops. Trying to plant a day here and a day there just doesn't work with my schedule. I guess I either have to be serious about the birds or serious about the garden. I can't manage it all.

Sharol, I've bought garden seed the last couple years at bluestem but haven't bought potatoes from them. Are their potatoes sold bulk by the pound or are they prepackaged. I like picking my own.
I need to get my sweet potatoes started. I have better luck starting my own than buying others. Last summer was a wash for them because it wasn't hot enough. This year I may cover the ground around them with black plastic to keep them warmer.
Tweety, do you know if I cut the top of radish if they will grow new tops? I would like to keep a crop of tops going for the peafowl.

Oh and you can click to get the exact moon phases but since this is based on Eastern Daylight time it only affects the chart by one hour so it shouldn't be off.

I used to have a big garden every year & when I was a lot younger I canned a lot of stuff from it. I just don't have the energy or ability any more with my arthritis such as it is to do that by myself. My DH would till up the soil & then say there you go & that was the extent of his "gardening", he just has no interest in it at all. He likes good food, but he just doesn't care where it comes from.

I have another hatch of chicks due tomorrow, but I'm not holding out a lot of hope for this one. I candled yesterday & didn't see much movement, but I have them in the hatcher just to see. I think a lot of the eggs I have been hatching of my own were collected when it was too cold. I should be getting past those soon.

sharol, I didn't see did the third egg hatch?
