Consolidated Kansas

What would you do?
I have three
1 Roos buff Orpington my oldest (will sometimes go after us) he has 6 hens
1yr old Delaware he has 4 hens but is go after other roos. Has my big buff running like a girl
1 bantam Cochin he will have 3 hens soon.

No my buff is a gentleman with his girls. But not us
Delware I see more wear on his girls
Cochin a sweetheart follows us around like a puppy(I'm keeping)
Which one should go? I've been thinking about getting rid of both and starting fresh but not sure if that's a good idea.. I know I don't need a roo for eggs but I like to hatch eggs so I need a roo.:he

I'd get rid of the orpington roo. You could replace him with a nicer orp roo. I have only had one mean orpington roo and he just got replaced. I still have him but he is just a backup now.
The delaware is going to be the most aggressive toward other roosters most likely. Orps are usually docile but they can become butt heads. If it were me and you don't have a place to separate them all to breeding groups the Delaware would be the one I would rehome. If you are breeding for pure breds and can separate them I'd keep the delaware. If the orps aren't show quality I would opt to find a better bred rooster for them.
I had two buyers back out at the last minute for this reason or that, so I have a ton of birds I need to sell. I held them extra time and one of them was even a custom hatch. I am so sick of this happening. I guess I'll be putting a bunch of birds up for sale this week. Problem is, that that means I will probably have them until next weekend and I have family obligations to take care of as well.
If anyone is interested in some nice show quality birds let me know. I need to move a few hundred of them. I have a new hatch tomorrow and another one the 3rd!

SternRose, I'm with Danz, go for it.

lizzy, I'm sorry you had such a bad trip, I'm glad you all got home safe.

Danz, yeah those key fobs now are not cheap. We have them as well & I worry about one getting lost or broken.

We had quite an afternoon yesterday, we went to pick up some used livestock panels from a gal not too far away from us. She neglected to tell me that we had to dig them out of tall grass that had grown over them & some were even buried into the ground. Some were wired on & one even had trumpet vines growing through it. It ended up being way more work than we had planned on & we hadn't brought any tools with us since we didn't know what we were getting into. It took way longer than I had planned & was a lot of work. She did throw in some partial panels I can use for gates though & some rolls of 2x4 fence, so I guess overall it was a good deal. Not many of the panels that we were able to get were perfect, but I'll make them work. I need to put together another pen so the sheep can have a separate one. So now I get to pound in t-posts, fun, fun.

Yay I got my silkies today!! And the lady was nice and threw in a few bantams. One happy chicken mamma here!!

Cute!

Good morning, everyone.
I am in OKC this morning at the 2014 BBR World Finals. My DIL rode the current world champion barrel horse two years ago. Pretty exciting stuff. She qualified for the short go on three of her four horses for today. It would be super exciting to win again. But for now we will just feel blessed to be here. Don't want to put all our eggs in one basket.

How is the weather at home?

I hope she won!

Oh boy, what a day! I'm way behind on reading and will have to catch up later. For now, just an quick update... I just got home after ATTEMPTING to leave from my sister's place at 7:30 this morning, and it is only a 3 hour drive. I had everything loaded. All I had to do was put Ethan in the car and drive away. Except that I couldn't drive away because I discovered that my keys were missing. I went looking for them high and low at my sister's place, in my sister's car, at my parents' place, and everywhere I could think of that I'd been. No luck. The only thing I can think of is that I lost them at a garage sale I went to, and I have no way of contacting the people who put the garage sale on (and I can't just go back to their place without driving about 4 hours). My husband ended up having to drive 3 hours to bring me his set of car keys on his day off after a really busy day for him yesterday. Then, on the way back home, we got caught in a dust storm (winds gusting to 65 miles per hour, and it has been REALLY dry out here. All that together resulted in ZERO visibility - worse than any blizzard I've ever been in!) I couldn't even see the front end of my car from the driver's seat, and the car was being pelted with things I couldn't see (rocks, tumbleweeds, etc). I nearly ran into a semi that appeared out of nowhere (thankfully not moving very fast). I had just pulled off of I-70 just before the dust storm hit, and I am so glad I did! It would have been nerve wrecking running into that on the highway with lots of other people! So, a trip that should've only taken 3 hours has taken about 14 hours. I am exhausted and so glad to finally be home. I am still not sure how I managed to lose my keys, and they seem to be the only thing missing. Apparently, my scatter brained-ness has really gotten the best of me this time! Or, maybe that's the 'mommy brain' tightening it's grip on me....

What a rotten ending to the day.

That was some lot of dirt in the air, wasn't it? I had my windows open and was at the store, so I just managed to make my dusty house even dustier!

Lol. Sounds rough. I'm trying to figure out if I should ask this guy in my grade out. My b-days Friday, and it also happens to be a school dance, and I don't want to go alone. I realy like this guy and in 6 grade he had a group(7) guy ask me out I said no, but know I realy realy like him. But I don't now if he likes me. Urge, what to do????!!!!

I'm with Danz. I'd never have had the courage to ask, but I think you should. He's probably feeling exactly the same way -- wondering if you like him and trying to have the courage to ask you. If you don't ask, you'll always wonder if you missed out.

We got some nice rain the other night. I was so glad, because I did NOT feel like running across town to water at the garden. I feel much better today. Last night, I wasn't sure I was ever going to feel better.

Lizzy I was thinking about you last night. I saw on the weather they were predicting snow out that direction. We just get a general Kansas wide high lights for weather so we don't really see much for your area. I have had days just like that. My DH lost the keys to our truck when we were in Branson, MO. I actually think he laid them on top of our friends truck while he hooked up the boat. We had already left our condo and we were 7 hours from home on a weekend. Nothing was open to get keys. Luckily I have a phobia about getting locked out of a vehicle and found I had a spare to the truck hidden in my bag. I didn't even realize I had it there. I hate smart keys though. I only have one key to my car and a replacement is $350. I finally bought a key with no buttons on it to keep at home for emergencies and it alone was over $200. If you try to use a key that isn't programed to the car it shuts down the computer so it won't run at all.
We have cold weather moving in this week and it's insane. Down in the 30s at night and highs in the 50's. This is May...or will be in two days. I don't ever remember weather like this. Are we heading back into the ice age again??
We did not get any snow last night. We got 0.12" of much needed moisture, but I think it was all in the form of rain. It was just enough to settle the dust a little, which is a good thing because we are having another crazy windy day. Gusts got to 64 mph in Goodland yesterday, and we are forecast to have another day of strong winds gusting up to 70 mph. After yesterday's experience with the dust, I am quite happy to not be going anywhere today! It is quite a bit cooler out here too. The forecast says that our high should be in the 40's and 50's this week, with lows around freezing.I don't mind the cooler weather too much though. It will be easier on the pasture since it is so dry still. Plus, my DH saw his a rattlesnake this weekend for the first time this spring. 40's and 50's is too cool for them, so they won't be out and about as much. And, even if we do see them, they won't be as spry and feisty as they would if it were warmer.

I made an appt with the local dodge dealership for Friday to get a new key made for the car. It will cost us ~$150 for the key itself (it is the kind of key that has a chip in it. THe buttons come separately). The clicker will cost us roughly another $100. It is turning out that losing my keys was an expensive mistake! Not just because of the price of replacement keys... it cost us about $100 to have my husband drive out to pick me up. He had to borrow a vehicle because we've having issues with the alternator on our second vehicle, and the replacement we got for it was refurbished and had the same problem as the original. Thankfully, one of our friends had an extra vehicle he was willing to loan us for the day.

Overall, the trip itself was pretty good. Trying to get home just turned out to be a lot harder than I thought and took way longer than it should have. The dust storm gave me a taste of what living in the dirty 30's must've been like. IT was really scary, and I'm glad that storms like that don't happen very often!

Hi All,
I know I don't post much but I usually read pretty faithfully. Last month I've been traveling alot and am way, way behind. One of my trips took me on 36 over from Witchita into OK and I figured I was probably traversing some of your neighborhoods. It was fun to see all the little towns, complete with Caseys and speed traps.

@chicken danz - I need to get pics up here so you and others can help with gender on my "danz birds." They are growing up fast and look beautiful. I'm suspecting that two are leaning towards the roo side. Oh well, hoping to get to keep at least one of them. Now to figure out how to butcher before they start crowing (assuming they are roos).

@KsKingBee -- I emailed on the auto door going through batteries and got a good email back, 4 different bullet points on what I needed to look at and dry lube. Kinda annoying to have to spend that much time on it, but I appreciated his responsiveness. Now to get time to actually go do it. :)

Not much otherwise, birds are good, getting six eggs a day from nine birds. My cream legbar doesn't lay that aggressively so she pulls the numbers down, but they're good all in all.

Just wanted to say hi.

Cherwill seems you've been sick a lot lately. I hope you get it worked out and start feeling better.

Good to see you back again. You need to just jump on and say "Hi" every once in a while. Hope you end up with lots of girls in the chicks. If not I am sure I'll have some leftover I can send your way later.

I'm back from another trip to the dentist. Not too bad this time. I need to get back out and care for the birds but I feel exhausted. It never fails that the novacaine or whatever it is makes me feel sickly. And it feels like winter almost out there again. That wind is darned chilly. This weather is just the worst.

SternRose it is hard for boys to ask also, it really hurts when the answer is not what you wanted. Lizzy I have a dodge van that when it is hot outside it decides to lock the doors. I had a chip key made at tru value hardware for $65,you have to unlock doors the old fashioned way but we unlocked doors with a key the first 40 years of my life. I have 7 large hens and 7 bantys, this weekend I had 5 hens go broody. What is in the air?
