Consolidated Kansas

I have considered the misters maybe on a water timer, city charges an arm and a leg for water now days! I have several water buckets with the poultry nipples and of course their fav spot to drink is a cake pan I will go get 2 kiddie pools. One for the kiddo and one for the chickens. Thanks for the input.

Hello all. Just blowing through today like everything around here. Like everyone else we are in need of rain and all we get is wind. We had blowing dirt yesterday but nothing like it was west of here. I am located about 30 miles south of the Nebraska border in the middle of the state.

Danz you give excellent advice! Everything from a sick flock member to dating. I totally agree for SternRose to ask the boy in person. It always gets messier the more people that get involved.

My geese are doing so much better. Their eyes have really cleared up. I had on hand what you recommended and medicated them. Then the next day our vet was here working cattle so she gave them a shot of LA-300. They are on the mend now and run from me when I try to medicate them so I am thinking they are telling me to quit.

I am really getting fuzz butt fever looking at everyone's pictures of their new little ones. My first time broody hen is still sitting tight on her eggs. I tried candling them on day 10 but obviously I had no idea what I was seeing. I used a LED flashlight but it may not have been bright enough. I just put them back under her and will hope for the best.
It's kind of hard to see a lot at day 10. You would basically see veining and maybe a small dark dot. But the color and porousity of an egg shell will also change what you can see.
Thank you. I consider that a compliment. I guess a benefit of being old is learning from my past mistakes and experiences.

It's raining here and it's cold. Miserable!! I have another hatch today but not as big as some of them have been. I put an add on one of the forums for chicks and got lots of responses. I sure hope I can sell as many as people said they were interested in. I have learned not to count on sales until people are here waiting at the gate with money in hand.
Yesterday I was ready to stop hatching all together. I was so sick of people taking my time and then not bothering to show up.

Would you suggest that I just watch her? Is there anything else I could do for her except for just waiting to see what happens? I forgot to mention that the other birds look fine. No sign of injury or sickness in any of the other birds.

It feels pretty cold here as well. Today's forecast says highs are only supposed to be in the mid-40's. It feels REALLY cold compared to what we've had recently, especially when you add in the cold North wind. It has been damp here this morning, but it has been barely enough to settle the dust. Don't get me wrong, settling the dust is a really good thing with this much wind, but we could really use a lot more moisture.

I saw last night that there was a major pile up due to that dust storm out your direction. I think it was on I-70. I'm glad you weren't in that string of traffic.
I would keep an eye on her and she'll probably come out of it. Occasionally my geese get to hobbling around but they are so clumsy it never surprises me when they hurt themselves a little.

SternRose... I agree with Danz and others that just go up to the guy and casually ask him. I know it is easier said than done but you don't want to miss an opportunity if you are interested in him. At least find out if he will go out with you and then go from there.

Friendshipstar... are you building a bigger better chicken coop that's why you are selling your like-new coop?

dwink2... I think it is hard to not get attracted by fuzzy butts... that's why when I go to Atwoods, I've to make sure I'm in and out with a list and don't go looking for chicks or anything chicks related stuff. Of course I can't control when people walk by with chicks and they chirp...chirp...chrip... Argh...

Danz... I seriously think you should ask people for a deposit (x% from total sales) so they can't just back out of a deal last second. If they do back out of a deal last second, then they forgo their deposit. I'm sure some will hesitate to commit to buying chicks but that's to be expected. It also makes them think twice before calling you to hatch chicks for them until they are ready. They can't just do this at your expense and leave you with tons of chicks to find buyers for. They just plain take advantage of you that's how I see it.

Cherwill... I think this weather had a lot to do with sinus and allergy issues. I know it has affected my sinus and I've to use more nasal spray and allergy meds this year than last year ... and I thought last year was bad! Hope you get to feeling better soon and be able to tend to your veggie garden. I planted all my tomato plants out over the weekend and the wind has just about killed all of them when I went to water them late yesterday. I was sick to my stomach when I saw how their little leaves have wilted and got pounded by the strong wind. The concrete wire tomato cages (they are very sturdy because I built them with the right materials!) all fell down and some laid on top of my poor plants. I can just about cry when I saw that.

Trish... cute little fuzzy butts... I have a broody sitting on some old duck eggs I found. I was going to cook them up for the dogs but decided to let her sit because she was bound and determine to go broody.

Lizzy... saw your pics about the dust and what not... the sky has been quite hazy over here due to the strong wind as well... Glad you were home safe and sound... dust storm sounds scary. You now have the mother's scatter brain... LOL I used to lose things around right after I had kids... I think my attention was on my kids so I don't have enough attention on other stuff so I tend to lose them. But I'm getting a little bit better now. I'm sure I'll be back to scatter brain once my kids hit teenage years...

Sorry about your goose... wonder if the coyote tried to snatch her?!?

I have lived here over 20 years and I seriously don't remember the last time it was this windy and lasted this long (weeks). For 1 thing... I don't remember they ever cancelled flights due to the strong wind here @ the airport but they did yesterday. I was driving to working this morning and saw a tree down... I'm pretty sure it was the wind because it was a tree on the other side of the side walk and I certainly don't see any damage by a car driving up there. The duck pool is constantly dirty not because of my ducks but it was from the sand, dust, leaves, etc. that got blown into it while I was filling it.

A little funny story from this weekend... Apparently the wind was so strong over Saturday night that the main gate was blown open. So my chickens and ducks were all happy to find their new "freedom". The birds were out and about, grazing happily and I have not a clue of this happening until I looked outside the window. Our pond is just outside the bedroom window and I saw a few ducks swimming (no glasses but I could made out some white moving objects in the pond so I knew they were ducks). So I holler at my husband to tell him to see the "wild" ducks swimming in our pond. He came over while I went to fetch my glasses. He then calmly said "Ummm... I think that's our ducks". I turned around and told him to quit joking because those peking ducks can't fly over the fence to reach the pond. By then I was already standing next to him in front of the window. Lo and behold... I counted and recognized all of them to be OUR ducks! So I quickly ran to the other window where I could see the coop and realized that the chickens were out and the gate was wide open! I was afraid the snapping turtles would grab and drown my ducks so DH went to shoosh them back into the pen from the pond. I could tell they were having a blast in the pond though.

With this wind, the tomato plants I planted over the weekend are not doing well. Their leaves wilted and I'm afraid they may not make it. I'm very sad to see them die in the wind because I put in a lot of effort to get them started from seeds and then hardened off. I can seriously say I have not had any issues with planting until this year due to the temperature and wind. Worst case scenario is to get some tomato plants from the store and get some that way. I still have the eggplants in the house which I'll start hardening off later this week after the wind has calm down some. But I'm just afraid they will die due to the wind. My hot chili pepper plants have been outside since the weekend and they don't look too "hot" either. This wind really has ruined my garden dream for this year. I hope I can salvage some of the plants later.

Hold on to your hat! It is going to be another windy day.

I am selling this coop because I already have the coop that my chickens are currently in, which I will be using for a brooder house very soon. It is a stationary coop. We have a huge shed that we are going to turn into a coop to winter our birds all together. This will also be a stationary coop.
I acquired this coop from some trading, knowing that I could sell it to get the money to buy materials to make portable coops. So that is my plan. I want to sell this coop and buy the materials to make at least two strong hoop coops. We already have a lot of the lumber and hardware, and of course the tools necessary.
Here are pictures of the coop that I have for sale. The bottom of the coop is not yet painted because it was on a trailer when the majority was painted and we didn't want to get paint on the trailer. But it will be painted before it is picked up.
I am going to post this coop on craigslist as well.
Two broody hens NOT included in sale of coop.

I hadn't heard about the pile up. I'm not surprised though. If it doesn't show up on foxnews.com or if it isn't announced on the local radio station during the morning hours when I'm working, then I probably don't know about it. I'm glad I wasn't in that string of traffic either. It was scary enough being in the dust storm when I wasn't on the interstate and there was a little area beside the road that I could pull into to get off the road.

Thank you for the opinions on my goose! I really appreciate it! I'll definitely keep an eye on her.

That's a very nice little coop, I'm sure you will be able to sell it, there are usually people looking for them.

Mother's scatter brain, huh? Definitely sounds like what I'm suffering from! Ugh! The thing is that I lost my keys without even using them! I never pulled them out of my purse (at least not on purpose), and I never touched them all day! How do you lose something that you haven't touched?

I dunno Lizzy but I use 90% of my time trying to find things that have disappeared. I swear sometimes I think an invisible force takes things or moves them around just to keep me stressed out!!!
I went out to feed and water in the brooder. My oil heater on the thermostat got unplugged and I lost two valuable imported chicks and one of my others. I hope it warms up in there soon. It felt like a cold winter day out there. The wind and the sprinkles just go right through you. I am going to have to bundle up before I go back out. I thought I had my winter coat washed and stored for the summer. Maybe not!!!
