Consolidated Kansas

Congrats on the hatching eggs! This heat is insane!! It's killing us with our ac out...

You're telling me, it's too early for this heat. My compressor went out on my ac as well. So luckily I saved some old window units a few years ago for emergency. Very thankful. Hope you get yours fixed soon. Or can get some window units. Check Craigslist

Might be able to get a few window units.... We'll see

Might be able to get some window units...hubby will look at it in the morning...

Good to see you again. mrsdanamiller.
Welcome disneygal25, tell us more about yourself. I have ducks as one of the people here. Love my ducks. They actually free range except at night. I used to let them free range at night as well but we had an owl that developed taste for fresh duck last summer and nearly wiped me out.
Life is crazy here right now. I am trying to sell a bunch of chicks and the messages are insane. It will be worth it if I actually sell them this time. Too many people say they are coming and then don't show at the last minute. I wish they'd realize I put a lot of time into this stuff.
I have someone who'll be here in about an hour. At least I know she is on the road on her way.

Good Luck selling the chicks!!

I live in the middle of the city....we have two indoor cats and a dog...two kiddos a girl and boy... Adding ducklings because hubby loves ducks! We want them as pets that lay eggs and take care of our garden pests... They will be indoors till they are old enough to safely live outside... They'll be free range at day and in a pen at night for protection... Any tips anyone has would be fantastic!

Thanks!

Hello All! I don't post often, but do read often. I have learned a lot about chickens from all of you.

I had something kind of funny happen yesterday. I have this cat who has stayed in and around the chicken coop and run since she was just a little kitten. She is always with the chickens. Well, yesterday my DH and I went out to feed the chickens and found one of our 9 broody (I have mostly cochins) chickens sitting on a pile of fur. It cant be chicks because she isn't actually sitting on any eggs so I looked closer and she was sitting on four brand new kittens. The cat decided that was the best place to have her kittens, I guess. She had a good babysitter while she went off to eat anyway because my Cochin was sitting right there with her kittens like she was their mother. When we moved the momma cat and her kittens to another part of the barn, the cochin was up pacing back and forth like we stole her babies from her. Poor girl! I went out there today to check on the kittens and chickens and the kittens are back in the coop. I guess thats where momma thinks they should be.

Hopefully they will be ok in there with all the other chickens?!?!

there are 4 kittens...one is underneath the chicken in this picture.

That is adorable! My cats like to hang around in my coop as well, but I've never found baby kittens in there, yet anyway.
Hey fellow citizens of OZ!

Is a newbie city duck owner allowed in to the Kansas club?

We are getting our ducks a week from tomorrow!
Welcome, what kind of ducks are you getting? I have ducks as well.

Ducks are fun to have, messy but fun. Mine free range part of the day & are in a safe pen at night. I have 3 babies right now too that were left from my first hatch.

We are getting Cayugas! I wanted Kakis but our feed store was on back order... Hubby isn't a fan of white ducks because we hear they can be louder...

I'm so excited! #Quackersin7days

Cayugas are pretty, I have never had that breed, but have had a lot of other ones over the years. Now I have Anconas & they're on the endangered list. They really aren't loud, they're pretty quiet actually. I think your DH may be thinking of Pekins, the big white ducks.

I don't live in the city, but maybe someone else who does could chime in.

These aren't the best pics, but you can get an idea. Mine are lavenders & blue, I got them from Danz. I have 3 ducks & a drake in there. I also have eggs in the incubator that I got from a gal in Colorado that are due later in the month. I'm trying to get some chocolates. I candled the eggs & they all look to be developing so far, keep your fingers crossed.

They are lovely!! Any tips for someone who's never had ducks before? My only experience is when I volunteered at our local zoo in farms...
