Consolidated Kansas

Hello everyone.
I have 75 eggs scheduled to hatch tomorrow and am starting to hear some chirps. So exciting! This just never gets old.
I've been swamped all week. But hope everyone feels as blessed as I do.
How true that is. My broody (still a pullet) Graycie's eggs are hatching. The 3 brown eggs have hatched (she has only let me see two of the chicks, though -- a black one with a white spot on his/her chest and a brown chipmunky one that came from a Welsumer egg (EE dad)). The third baby is out -- found the empty shell, but she bit me when I tried to look under her this morning

. The 2 green EE eggs haven't hatched, and I suspect they might not. When I candled them, they didn't look quite right. It is only day 21, though, so I'm giving them a little longer until she gives up on them. The first baby is 36 hours old, but the other two a day younger.

A little miracle happening in the chicken house.

OK so my chicks and ducks are now four weeks old. We finally finished the coop. Still working on the run however. Since its getting hot is it too soon to put them in the coop? I'm worried they will over heat at this age. Or if the run was done would it be OK to put them in as long as they can have access to the run?

If you can hang a heat lamp in the coop and give them access to go in and out they will do fine. In fact if it is warm you could probably shut it off but be sure to put it on at night. It will also help them find their "sleeping area" and get accustomed to going in.

It's cool here today. Only about 58 right now. I had to put a jacket on to go to the post office this morning. It has been pretty miserable hot here though since we haven't gotten acclimated.
We had rain all around us but I think we might have gotten two tiny drops total. The skies looked awful but that was as far as it went. It is super dry and I'm really afraid we are going back into a drought again. It's rained all around us but not here.
I have to go get a load of feed here shortly. I can't believe I've been so busy I haven't had time to sit down and post. It's been crazy here for sure. I'm ready for a break!!! Tomorrow I am making a long drive to deliver chicks. I probably shouldn't cause it will take all of my profit but I figure I need to move chicks so it's going to happen.
My DH finally went back on day shift today and it feels wonderful. He doesn't have his days and nights turned around and he is going to be a grouch for awhile, but it's nice to be alone in the house and know I can make noise. Lord willing I may even find some time to finally clean again.

Congrats on the chicks! I do know since I have several breeds that lay blue & green eggs that they're harder to hatch, they're more porous so that must make a difference.

Wow, that's quite a bunch of eggs to hatch at once. I try to break mine up into smaller groups so I'm not so overwhelmed at one time. I'm still finishing up a hatch that really was due today but most of the chicks have hatched already. I'm hoping for a couple more yet, hopefully they'll get with it some time today.

I've been really busy myself as well, I haven't had as much computer time. Between building a goat pen & working on my hoop coop besides having to go places it's been a little crazy. I have quite a lot on my plate today too. I hope to get started on the fence for the goat & sheep paddock this weekend.

My black copper Marans are hatching like crazy today. The cream Legbars have a few pip wholes and I've heard a few chirps. But no hatches. I am wondering if they are moving slower because I didn't let the shipped eggs settle before starting them.
I really really am hoping these cream Legbars take off.

My experience has been that the Cream Legbars are a lot slower to hatch than the other breeds, I don't know why but they always seem to be. Good luck with them.

These are my 3 6-week old chicks. The pictures are large if you are interested in full sized images. Any idea on gender? Two of them are Marans/EE crosses, and one is a Marans/Orpington by EE cross. These broody raised chicks aren't too happy about being handled, so I caught them on the roost last night. Any input is welcome. I know what I think, but...

Thanks Trish44!
Six of my cream Legbars have now hatched. And hopefully I will get a few more.

Looks like that one on the right as you view the pictures is cockerel for sure.
Yup, that's what I thought.

The one on the left has a comb that is partially black, but it is still small. Fingers crossed for 2 pullets.

Graycie's hatch is done. She hatched 3 -- one brown one that looks like a little Welsumer (mom is a (nasty tempered) Welsumer) and 2 littler black ones that look like the pure Marans chicks I hatched last summer from your eggs. They won't stand still for pictures yet. They are just stinkin' cute.

Think pullet!!

Sharol that one on the right for sure is a cockerel but if they're EE crosses they could fool you later on the others. Here's hoping for girls.

We went out & started surveying for our fence & there has to be quite a bit of tree trimming on one side at least to get to it. It's going to be a process for sure. We did get the straw I got put up in the horse shed so it will stay dry.It looks like rain right now.
