I'm sorry to hear about everyone's losses. Danz, I'm sorry to hear that people have been so rotten to you lately!

I just looked out my window to discover that my flock (2 embden geese, 1 white chinese gander, 1 mixed drake, 3 ducks) had a visitor!


Sorry for the bad lighting in the above picture. Our visitor was a wild turkey! It walked right past my flock...


...and then started picking at a spot in the grass.


Suddenly, the "spot in the grass" decided to bite back! Apparently, the turkey thought it was going to get snake for lunch! I just missed capturing on camera the turkey jumping upwards when the snake struck at it.


The snake then tried to make a getaway and went towards the tree. The turkey chased it. I'm not sure which one was the victor (the snake or the turkey). I couldn't see through the grass/trees. However, the turkey came out several minutes later. It makes me wonder what kind of snake it was that the turkey was after. We've had a big bull snake hanging around recently, and we've seen plenty of rattlesnakes and blue racers in the yard in recent years... Either way, I learned something today! I did not know that turkeys would eat snakes! I was intrigued by what I saw so I went and looked it up online. Apparently, turkey and chicken hens will both go after snakes, assuming they are small enough. Very interesting!!!

My youngest daughter is here from Minot, ND. She and her husband moved up there from here nearly two years ago when he took an engineering job with the railroad. They currently own a house south of augusta that they've had rented until now. Her renter has just abandoned ship, and left her with a terrible mess to clean up before she can get the house listed to sell. She called me when she left there this morning to let me know that the renter abandoned three crested ducks. He just left them there penned up. Who does that to any living being?
But I don't do ducks. So who wants them? Lol

You could try pinless peepers? So she can't see them to beat them up? She probably doesn't like that they are getting bigger and potentially threatening to her.

I hadn't thought of that. I even have some that I got last year when I thought I had a similar problem. Pinless peepers it is tonight.

Oddly enough, one night in the hoop run may have done the trick. Last night she let the kids (actually 10 weeks old this week) in without accosting them. I love the pinless peeper idea.

josie good luck on your packing, it has to be hard after just moving not that long ago & now doing it again. We're going to miss you, I hope you will stop back in after you get settled & visit once in awhile even though you won't be in KS any more.

BUMMER! I just shipped him off with another couple roos to probably be dinner.....The hopeful news is that when the lady saw him she thought maybe he was too beautiful to sell to eat to the lady who buys extra roos off her and she was thinking she might let him run with her hens instead. She is a really sweet lady and has a pair of geese from me too so I don't think she would have said that without being fairly serious.

Word came down the pike that you may need to rehome a Big Black Orp dude. If so, I will still be doing birds for some time and I have some Chocolate Orp hens who would love a new fellow.

On the move part of it, I have sworn I would never do it again, but after 15 years in one house, I am starting to feel like I may manage it after the kids are gone without much issue.

I have a lady that is taking my ducks, she may be interested in more? If you want to send me a PM with some more contact info I can let her know about them and get you guys connected. That is pretty sad to abandon them but people do stuff like that all the time....

Awesome! I finally bought some and haven't even needed to use them yet! I brought a pair out for two of my cochin boys who wouldn't stop duking it out and just chasing them around trying to catch them to put them on apparently straightened them out and they don't want to fight with each other anymore!

I was on the go again today. Back for another dentist appointment. Then home to care for birds again.
JosieChick I hate to see you go. The goosies are doing great though and seem very happy to be with my others. They are getting so big. It won't be long they'll be going to the big pen....if I ever get it done.
One of my geese decided to lay a late egg and is sitting on it. I'm just going to let her do it. All the others are done and even starting to get a few feathers back in.
I hatched two more peachicks today. A white and a purple. The white had splayed it's legs already before I got it out of the incubator and it wasn't dry yet so I hope my fix-it corrects them.
I had chicken eggs due to hatch yesterday and none have hatched yet. Makes me wonder if I got the date wrong on them. They all looked full sized when I candled though.
Lizzy I've never seen my turkeys do anything but yell if they see a snake. I guess if you have to eat in the wild you eat a lot more stuff.
I have been over run with snakes here lately. There was a HUGE big black snake in the shop yesterday. He got to stay for a while to eat mice.
friendshipstar, that happens way too often. I hate to see what people do to animals. They don't even attempt to rehome them often. It's so sad.

Not only did the lousy renter leave the three ducks, he left them in a raised wire cage. It's about four feet off the ground. Maybe 3 x 3 feet and no food or water. My daughter and husband just went over to get them and bring them home.

That's sad about the ducks, I'm glad your daughter found them though. People unfortunately do that more than anybody would like. It just makes you want to treat them just like they did the animals.

I found my little male gosling stuck in the mud today after we had a rainstorm last night. It was all muddy, cold, & couldn't get up. I brought him in & washed the mud off & dried him with the hairdryer. He's in a bin in the utility room now under a light. I brought the other one in so he wouldn't be lonely. I have given him electrolytes with a syringe a few times. I hope he makes it.

that's why I like this group. You all think like I do. The contrast in this post highlights that. The renters abandoning their birds with not a thought for their welfare and you bringing in not only the chilled gosling, but a friend for him.

A lone goose won't do well. They really need companionship especially if they are already in a depressed state. Trish I hope he has picked up and is doing much better. Keep me posted and we'll work out something if you need another one.
Even though it's morning I feel overwhelmed already. Something has to give around here.
More people drama. My buyer cancelled on buying the two trios of chocolate orpingtons bantams because of storm damage, and now the guy that is buying all my LF white, lavender, and black orpingtons postponed until Monday to come get them. I guess people just think I run a holding business. I had held the chocolates over 2 weeks for this gal. Now I have to sell them again. I sure hope the other guy doesn't back out. Good grief.
I just had to fork out $1500 yesterday because my insurance denied the claim for my bottom partial work. I really could use the chicken money now. Not to mention I have to buy feed again since a good deal of it got ruined from the rain.
I swear my luck lately has just been all types of rotten. I need to do some more major downsizing before fall for sure.
