I thought it may be a young duck, as its beak and legs showed no signs of age. It did not show any signs of being afraid of humans or anything else. It must have moved on, because I did not see it yesterday when I did my chores. Maybe it is headed to Coffeyville. LOL

If I remember correctly they are pretty friendly ducks. But High school was a few years ...or decades...agoi, lol

I've got an empty pond he can have!! LOL

Ralph, such beautiful duck! Too bad it didn't stay. Hopefully it found the flock or his/her mate and took off to a pond some where.

Danz, I'm not very good at cleaning out stuff. I still have gazillion boxes down in the basement and I just pretend they don't exist because I don't go down to the basement much! LOL.

HeChicken, your turkey is funny. I hope she continues to sit on the eggs and gives you more baby turkeys. So happy that your turkey won a prize for that lady! That says a lot about the quality of your bird! How long does it take to hatch turkey poults? I'm clueless when it comes to turkey.

Trish, I hope the PT works for you this go around. Makes it difficult to do chores if you leg doesn't heal.

Here is a pic of what we picked up from the garden the other day. The cantaloupe was so juicy and delicious that I saved the seeds for next year. DH picked up the seedling from some place (he doesn't remember where) and this is the only cantaloupe plant we have in the garden. I hope it is not a hybrid and the seeds will produce the same delicious melons for us next year. There are 4 more cantaloupes in the garden, I can't wait to taste them.

The orange colored tomatoes are actually more yellow than the picture shows. Those are the Hawaiian Pineapple. The darker purplish colored one was Cherokee Purple. We also harvested all the red potatoes from the garden yesterday. Wish we planted more now. They are just delicious!

Enjoy the day everyone!

Quote: Ralph whistling ducks are very tame birds. They nest in the trees at my daughters house in Austin, TX every year and while they are there they just come up where she is feeding her chickens and join in.
We closed on my parents house today. One small chapter done for now. I put wire on the windows in the trailer today. I also moved another large cage thing inside and moved the second group of peafowl out into it. Then I moved the turkeys that had gotten big enough to start flying out of their brooder bin in the house. I left the smaller peachicks and turkeys in here for now.
I have some chicks due tomorrow and ultimately had to make some room. I guess I'll have to clean the bin when I find some time later. I have things on my schedule for the next 5 days. I am so worn out and just want a few days by myself at home but it's not going to happen soon.
I lost my most gorgeous cockerel today. He was a gold laced 100% English Orpington. He was fine when I went to their pen the first time. MInutes later I returned and he was laying dead by the gate. His comb was blue. I checked him and there were no worms, he had plenty of fat, his organs looked very healthy. All I can figure is either he choked to death on something or broke his neck. He hadn't been dead more than 2 minutes when I found him. So after a quick necropsy I skinned him and put him on the stove for the dogs to have for dinner. I just feel sick. He was a very expensive bird and my absolute favorite orpington.
HEChicken I sure hope your crested girl does some good. I think it would be so great if you could end up with others....even though she does act strange.
One of my broodies set her kids free today. They are running all over alone. I found one by itself and was going to pick it up and she came running out of nowhere. But the rest of them are here and there all over the yard. I guess she decided they were old enough. She sure didn't raise them long. But I noticed she had a very strict routine about where she took them for food and water so maybe she thinks they will continue alone. They sure don't look big enough to me.

Thanks for that info - I have it saved to Evernote so I'll be able to find it when I need it again. It sounds perfect so I appreciate the tip.

I know closing on your parents house was tough but I hope having that done and behind you will feel like a relief - time that you can devote to other things now instead of that.

I've had some broodies give up chicks earlier than I thought they should too. I have one cochin who has raised more broods than I can remember. The chick she raised in the winter she stayed with for a long time but her most recent chick, she abandoned at 5 weeks. That poor chick didn't know what to do and ultimately convinced another broody hen to adopt her. So from 5-9 weeks, she had a second mother. That mother has also given her up now, but at 9 weeks the chick doesn't seem to mind and is happy to do her own thing.

There were 4 chicks in her group. The forth one hasn't been with the others and I don't know which hen she is because she looks like all the other white rocks. I do know the other one was a little cockerel though, so if he doesn't show up that's okay. It just broke my heart last night to see them confused and crying because they weren't sure where to go at bedtime. She had hatched and raised them in the flower garden and recently been just sitting under this bush or that with them at night. They didn't ever get moved to a building. The three of them were out this morning though so I guess they made it through the night. I worry with these two newer cats around here. I'm not real sure they are chick safe. If the hen was with them and flogged them I knew they would be okay. I hope they leave them alone.
I am glad my parents' house is sold but we just had to haul all the stuff to one of my sisters houses for now. For the next several days we will be going through it again plus setting up for a garage sale this weekend. Then there are some things of value and family treasures that we haven't divided yet. My oldest sister is going to be gone for the next week or so, so those things just have to wait until she gets back. Of course none of this is final even then. We have to worry about taxes and all that as well. My parents had a will but the individual list of things in it disappeared some how. Not that they had much and there are four siblings. It's all the years of accumulation that really cause the problems. I swear when I get caught up I plan to start eliminating things. I have way too much stuff.
I keep getting asked what would happen to my chickens if something happens to me. I have no idea. DH can't remember the names of the breeds and has no idea of the value. He'd probably just give them away so he wouldn't have to care for them.

I am worried about my chickens and ducklings :( just watched a Tom cat from the trailer park kill a baby bunny in a yard cornering mine.. of course the one morning I had left my air rifle in the house :((((((( been patrolling all morning since then but haven't seen him again yet and I have to go to work soon ...

Thanks Tweety, I hope it does some good this time too, I'm tired of the whole ordeal. The physical therapist thinks the torn ligament may be the source of a lot of my pain at this point, so now comes the healing for that. I still have a lot of inflammation & swelling going on. I'm trying to wear the brace as much as I can, it's just irritating & hot this time of year. Wow that is some nice produce from your garden, I'm envious. I would love to taste the Hawaiian Pineapple tomatoes, I'll bet those are interesting.

I have had outdoor cats here always & have never had a problem with them getting my chickens, however I don't give them access to the babies. I figure they would get a chick if given the chance, it's just instinct & to them they aren't any different than any other peeping bird. Mine do hunt baby bunnies as well as mice & rats. My adult chickens will actually peck & flog the cats if they come into the coop & run, they don't want them in there. It sends them running for sure.

It's been raining here all morning, we can use the rain but I always feel like it's a wasted day I could be doing something outside. I just hope it stops before time to do chores, it's pretty miserable to go out & feed in the rain.

danz I'm glad you're getting this stuff done with the house & all, but it is very time consuming for sure. You should have more time when this is finished to do your own projects. I have gone through all of that twice with first my parent's place & then my in-laws. Both times the cleaning & painting & all fell to me for the most part to get the houses ready to sell. I was glad when that was finally over. I'm sorry about your rooster, that's such a shock to find a bird like that when you just saw it healthy & happy.

I got three cats and a short fence. There is a white stray that jumps but never caught a chicken even my little serma bantams the size of doves. If they are past 8 weeks they should be ok.

Help!! It rained over 2" last night and this morning and this afternoon when I went and let my chickens out my rooster looked beyond miserable. His comb is sort of blueish and so are his wattles. He's sort of slow and altho he's out free ranging now he still looks miserable. It's been super hot here until a couple days ago. Could he be cold or what? He's a lovely silver laced wyandotte and I don't want to loose him!!:(
