Consolidated Kansas

So what kind of chickens are your test hatch? I don't remember if you said.
I have chicks hatching today too. I may not have as good a hatch as normal cause my humidity pad got too full of lime and wasn't wicking water. That made the humidity a little low. I've been so busy I was just checking the level in the bucket instead of the actual humidity.
I brought in another incubator today. I have it settling. I am way behind on setting eggs. Should have been done yesterday for sure. It was a bit of a miserable day today. Just like winter and I had a lot to do. I really was in one of those moods to throw my hands in the air and give up. I did manage to get the duck pond pumped out, cleaned and refilled. And DH helped me move the pen the guineas are in so they could be on some fresh ground. I had another egg in there before I moved them. I sure hope I didn't mess up their laying. I had one escape when I was putting their "furniture" back in. It's been panicking ever since but not smart enough to go to the gate while I was there.
I need to get busy but I am just totally worn out right now. Maybe I'll get a second wind.

Hello all! All of the pictures of the little fuzzier is giving me chick fever. Does anyone know where I could get some red frizzle bantam chicks? I really do not need anymore chickens but they are little and won't take much room, right??? Lol.

If I do find some bantams I need to make sure that it works to run them together with my standard size flock. Do any of you see that this would be a problem?

Thanks for any input.

It actually depends on your particular large flock. If they are aggressive breeds it won't work. If they are easy going breeds they should be fine. Keep in mind however that any time you introduce chickens there is going to be a pecking order so because they would be smaller they might not be as strong. However, in the past my bantam were usually pretty forward little birds and seemed to do fine.
I managed to fill the entire incubator I brought in yesterday with a half tray full of leftovers. That is over 240 hatching eggs in one week. Not to mention I sold about 6 dozen eating eggs. I just candled last weeks eggs and eliminated those that weren't developing. I've still got two colors that aren't producing. One pen I know the rooster is probably still too young. The other pen I know the rooster was producing and thought the hen was. She was in a pen of producing girls but so far the eggs with the two of them haven't been fertile. I may have to switch hens. She is laying. The eggs just aren't fertile. He is breeding her for sure too. This particular one is a color breeding project. At least there are other hens I can use.
I'm not happy today. I had a sale lined up and then it got cancelled at the last minute. I really need to sell some chicks. They are eating me out of house and home.

I set my eggs from thndrdancr yesterday and added several of my own! :weee :weee :weee guess we'll see how my bator works! I'm reasonably impressed so far. I got a Janoel 24 egg and it seems sturdy and well made but I don't have much experience either.
My goat kids are growing like weeds! They're really getting playful! It's a mood booster just watching their antics! :D here's a few more recent pics. I'm hoping I can find pet homes for at least a couple of the boys. They're so sweet and playful and Love attention! I finally got a website up and running for my goats and Pyrs after much work and trying to figure things out. I nearly dispaired several times but I was determined to figure it out and do it without DHs help. :) the other day when I was out there with them Elf, my little doeling clambered into my lap, cuddled down and went to sleep for a while! I was pleased to say the least! Not sure how we'll be able to keep doing that when she's bigger! Lol

Thanks Danz! I would love to be a resource for anyone wanting to change city ordinances. My husband and I are pretty passionate about local ag and have presented at a town meeting before. Heck, I'm sure my students would even be willing to go to a city meeting and talk about how chickens influence their overall well-being!
I'm so glad I'm finally a part of this blog (Why on Earth didn't I join sooner?!?) and I really appreciate people like you, Danz, being encouraging and helpful to those of us who are new to BYC!

We have a little chick that can't seem to use his feet. I looked up what to do for rehabilitation and found a method of bracing the feet so they grow correctly. We've had them braced for a few days now, and it doesn't seem to cause the chick (that I named Forest Gimp) any pain, in fact, he seems to do a lot better when his feet are braced than he does when they aren't braced. Here is an 11 second video of his progress.
Are there many of you who has dealt with this before?

What did you do? Was it successful?

Thank you, that is really sweet. I love to hear of people who are passionate about agriculture and getting back to basics. And your idea of using students is excellent. Nothing convinces adults more than kids. Especially kids that are showing a real willingness to learn how to do things for themselves.
So judging from your video I am guessing the chick had curled toes or feet? I believe one of our posters had made tiny shoes out of foam board once. I have had spraddle leg in the past and have used vet wrap to fix joints before. I'm guessing that is what Milomac is referring to with the bandaid. Another way to do the same thing.
It seemed today went really fast and I just did some normal chores. I moved my held over turkeys to a different pen today. These are mostly going to be breeders or get butchered. Some of them have swollen sinuses and I believe it is from mold in their old pen. I moved them temporarily until I can figure out a way to move the old pen to a new location.
Hopefully some of these will be gone soon.
I really needed a day off today. I've really been dragging.

Hello all. I need some advice/ideas. I am trying to figure out a way to build a chicken coop and run that is predictor proof without spending a thousand dollars. Any ideas are welcome...
Thank You
Ricki
