Consolidated Kansas

Best of luck in getting the ordinance changed. I love that people are willing to come forward to help and I love all the support here. I'm not on as often as I would like but every time I get on I feel part of a community. It's a nice way to start (or momentarily escape from) a hectic day.

Good luck with the city ordinance chickenmommy. Our town doesn't allow chickens either, however I know there are a few people in town that have them anyway. My DH has been out running in town & heard a rooster crowing. Since our town has the fairgrounds for the county & they do have 4H I don't understand why they outlawed them. I'm sure it was just somebody who isn't educated about it all.

Trish, Columbus is the county seat of Cherokee County, and they have a poultry ban also. I do know where a few, clandestine backyard poultry locations, are located in Columbus. The all have 6 foot, or higher privacy fences surrounding them. Sometimes "out of sight, out of mind" works for some people, and a supply of fresh eggs to close neighbors, helps also. It amazes me how a community can be so closed minded to backyard poultry, and allow people to play their car radios at a volume that can be heard several blocks away. That is why I live where I do, and have no neighbor closer than one mile away.

I'm back in Kansas. I spent 6 days in Colorado helping look after the grandkids while my daughter moved. Came home with a cold (from my grandson) and a sore back, but had a great time.

Today my little barred rock pullet bit me when I checked under her for eggs. She had been in the nest box for 8 hours, so she may be thinking about going broody. We shall see. I gotta say I wouldn't mind some little ones running around. They double the work, but dang, they are really cute.

I can't get caught up on the list -- too far behind.

Quick question.
How old are chicks when moving from brooder to regular open coop?
I have a few chicks hoping up on feed and water bowls trying to escape the brooder.
Thanks everyone

I wouldn't move them outside until they're fully feathered out & able to withstand the outside temps. It's still really cold at night right now, so even though they're adventurous little souls I wouldn't move them out just yet. They aren't good at regulating their body temp until they're fully feathered & filled out some. You may want to consider fashioning a screen top for your brooder. The little chicks learn to fly pretty early on.

Well my incubator is officially full, no more room at the inn. I told Danz I could use another one but then I wouldn't have room for all of the chicks when they hatch, so I guess it's better I don't have one. I wish my other breeds would hurry up & get to laying, I have people waiting on chicks.

Does anyone here need a big beautiful Buff Orp rooster? I have ended up with a pen full of them & only need one. If I don't find homes for them they will be going to freezer camp. I also have a Heritage Rhode Island Red rooster who needs another home. I had hoped to keep him for a backup but these guys won't behave themselves together.

So glad you are back. You could have left the cooler weather in Colorado though!!! This stinks.
Anderson Lowe, I wouldn't move chicks outside before 6-8 weeks. like Trish said. They need to be fully feathered and filled out a little. I normally have a heat lamp in the outside coop for a few nights just to help them learn where to go and to assist while they acclimate to cooler temps. I don't run one in the day time unless it's really cold out.
Yesterday we moved the wall in the building another 8 feet or so. I had to laugh at the chicks in there. I guess with the extra room they all decided they were eagles and not chickens. They were all trying to fly back and forth. It was so comical. It's like they discovered they had wings cause they had room for a runway. I didn't get my eggs set yesterday cause I am totally out of room. So I'm already a day behind. I'm really don't want to set up another incubator in the house but the building isn't ready for that yet. I don't know if the temperature in the brooder area is stable enough to run one in there.
I found three eggs in my pen of last years guineas. So now I'll have guineas to hatch as well. Seems everything is laying now but the pheasant and the peafowl. I am sure the peas will be soon. I saw one of the white hens sitting in the nest box yesterday, but no eggs yet. I sure wish I had access to some greens for them. I know they would benefit from them.

My test batch began hatching late last night!!!! (Probably didn't help that when we set them it was after 10pm) When I left for work this morning three were out and one was pipping it's way out into the world. I can hardly wait to get home!!

I'd be claiming a "medical emergency" and heading out the door. The waiting would make me crazy! Hope all is well!
