Consolidated Kansas

Danz, I can see why you can't bear to sell off the games and ornamentals. Those are absolutely beautiful birds.

coleco, this is the place for all whose friends have grown tired of listening to chicken talk!

KsKingbee, my cousin keeps bees and I've often thought I would try that one day. Right now, I'm up to my eyes with chicken projects, but once I have my birds at the point I want them, I am going to give beekeeping a try. I've researched a bit from time to time and it seems doable. Just acquiring all the equipment will be the main obstacle but it's a matter of prioritizing. We had a swarm in our huge pine tree one year. I'd never seen anything like that before.

DH has decided not to purchase anymore grocery store chicken!!!! I'm so excited and thrilled, you just don't know. He doesn't want us to have to process anymore chickens so he is going to buy not only all grass raised chicken, but any meat will be raised by a farmer whose methods we know and approve of. I am so happy! It is going to save the kids and I a whole lot of work. We were willing to do it to avoid the grocery store birds but this is going to mean more swim time in the summer! My excess roos will still be processed but I won't be raising any birds specifically for meat. I never thought I would see the day. That guy is a keeper! It's been three years of doing our thing and respecting his right to disagree. It just goes to show, even when you think you know someone inside and out, they can really surprise you.

My first batch of shipped Aloha eggs was a disaster. One managed a partial zip and quit, another had help out but it was malformed and didn't make it. I sure hope my next group nets something. It went into lockdown today. I didn't candle before lockdown. I normally do but I guess I just didn't want to know for sure how slim the odds were. This box was more damaged than the other and had more breakage so I don't know if I'll get anything of the whole production. Sigh.

The garden is looking good. We are out of mulch and it's too wet to go pick up the free stuff at Rose Hill, plus, Asplundh had to pull out of our area due to... mud. I am pulling weeds like a wild woman for those areas without mulch and have the rough, cut up hands to prove it. Still, I love being outside and with the cloud cover, it's been enjoyable.

I'm thinking about moving the chickens to the back tree line for the summer. There is shade back there all day long and I think it will be cooler for them. It will also give the grass in their current location a rest. I increased the size of their yard this year with an additional 100' of electric netting and it made a huge difference. The grass around the chicken house has regrown except where it gets excessive shade.

I added a second wading pool to the yard yesterday. Danz said it may help the two duck groups to get along better, if they had separate swim facilities. I already have multiple waterers and feeders, so if they got chased from one, they could just go to the next. It worked out beautifully and the two duck worlds seem much happier with their worlds. I don't know why I didn't think of it. I plead preoccupation with getting everything ready for our family reunion. Thanks, Danz!

I recently purchased a book (after some research) on how to garden WITH free-range chickens: Free Range Chicken Gardens: How to Create a Beautiful, Chicken-Friendly Yard by Jessi Bloom. Am almost finished reading it and my chicken garden is in the layout and list process right now. As an award-winning garden designer as well as avid with chickens and the whole permaculture gardening concept, she has a plethora of knowledge, info, and tips worth reading/looking into. Might be something that could help in your garden dilemma?

Ohhhh, it IS soooo EXCITING for me! lol I can hardly contain myself with the vision I have in my mind's eye!!

I've made a blueprint with colored pencils of the 2(ish) acre area immediately surrounding the house, coop, and craftshed/workshop, and am in the process of a spreadsheet list of the various plants for our zone, complete with info and images so I can design a year-round colorful garden with strategically placed plants for all levels of function throughout. It'll be an interesting one, I'm sure, as the area I'm incorporating has no shade trees, is up on a "pad" over the septic trough-thingies (lol), and is currently bindweed, stickers, and bermuda. UGH! (with the "yard" area I have to mow already, it takes me 4 hours on the badboy - want to cut that down big time) Soooo, even though I have hauled home a large load of broken cement pieces from an old sidewalk to use as peaceful, artsy, meandering walkways (can you hear the dreamy music??), I have to first figure out how to wipe my "slate" clean. Till, dig, layer, or spray, that is the question!

Hubs thinks I've gone bonkers and just rolls his eyes and shakes his head. LMBO. I keep saying, "trust me, darlin', it'll be gorgeous when I'm done!"

But first comes a complete coop remodel and design, then the new craftshed/workshop, and a wrap-around deck (house). Lots of native species plants, etc, out in the field and pasture area to harvest and replant before I consider what other plants to purchase.

When I get it narrowed down and a more solid plan-o-gram, I'll be happy to share!

Danz, haha i know the greenhouse feeling. My coop is my greenhouse, omg the weeds... I got a pic for you of my usually low weed garden.

i've been crunching out an incubator so I sacrificed a week and a half of weeding, you can see the results haha.

how nice! I would love to find some broken cement pieces! I have some large tiles leftover from our bathroom and thought about laying them out, but don't want it to look goofy!

My coop has some crepe myrtle to the easy of it, which I want to use as a backdrop, since they don't get leaves until about now. I look forward to seeing your plans and photos! Not the best photo as the grass is a mess, but this was a few weeks ago, I have since painted the windows and nest box and added a photo on there!

Hello all, been reading the past posts in here and have a question. I have 3, 9 week old silkies. I have a neighbor who has Polish chickens that are 3 weeks old was looking to take two of hers,is this not a good idea with everything that's going on?

I say go for it. There have always been all kinds of reasons that makes it intimidating to get new birds. Better now than when you have had the silkies 2 years and paid for all of that care to risk it. Building a flock requires getting birds somehow, if ya cant trust your neighbor who can ya trust? The AI case that was confirmed was almost definitely a goose pooping from the sky onto a chickens beak or something.(how could you ever stop that)
