Okay thanks

I hope you guys don't think we sound like bird snobs. The person asking is just getting ready to start their flock and it's only because they may not have a lot of years of experience that we sound like we are warning. Heavens, I still have things to learn myself.
I had a minor surgical procedure yesterday so I was pretty out of it. I got about 18 hours of sleep since then so I am well rested. A little sore but otherwise okay. I have to do some catch up today. Tomorrow is a booked solid day as well. I hate weeks when there is a lot going on.

It's always good to err on the side of caution when buying birds from someone you don't know. If you're new to chickens & don't know what to look for you can get taken pretty easily & then have heartache over the fallout. I haven't bought birds from anyone I don't know in a long time. Of course now being NPIP certified I only have the option to buy from people who are NPIP so that narrows the choices. We try here on this thread to be fair but we do like to educate people about things so they can make an informed decision. I think it's best to go in with your eyes open instead of being blindsided.

I've been painting on the permanent paint now on my Veg Trug. I have about 4 more bigger pieces to do yet before I can get it put together. It has taken much, much longer to do than I originally thought it would, but there are a lot of parts to it. This time after priming I started on the smaller pieces first to get those out of the way so now I just have the 4 bigger ones left. Those do have a lot of surfaces though since there are slats to cover. That's what takes so long is getting all of the surfaces painted with two coats.

I've been moving birds around slowly too from the growout pen. I really would like to have it emptied out before it gets cold. There are a few younger birds in there though, so we'll see.

I've learned a lot from all of you and never think of you as snobs. I think you give friendly warnings and I appreciate that. Though I love them, I wish I had found this forum before I got my first chicks. Would have been just as easy to fall in love with some of yours. Thanks again.

Thanks what a nice sentiment!
I discovered as I suspected that @TakenBackBre is an acquaintance of mine. It's always nice to know who you are talking with. Many of us from the forum used to get together and enjoy a day once in a while. Unfortunately some of those people have left the area, quit posting, or otherwise gotten too busy. We've made so many good friends because of this forum. Summer is always a slow time. My best friend is a person whom I met here. Although she only posted here a few times she had just moved into my area then. It's amazing how we can connect.
It seemed like I walked in circles yesterday. I just didn't seem to accomplish much at all. Today is booked up so it will be another worthless day.
I do hope to get the floor built for the building we took off the base a week or so ago. It would be nice to get it done and get it painted before the next rain. I still need to repair the roof on it but I think I need it to be re-attached to the floor in order to support my weight first. I'm hoping to put peachicks in there for the winter. I should sell some but I still have some hatching so I'm not sure what all I will have.

I know I've been pretty quiet lately. Lots going on.

My DH has decided that fixing up a broken down shed would cost nearly as much as a new building, so we ordered a building from Mark II Lumber. They are going to even install the windows that I got off Craigslist for me. We will have to prepare the spot for it with some landscape timbers, but I ordered it today. I added soffit vents and a ridge vent in addition to the 4 windows, so there will be plenty of fresh air.

The plan is to put the Orpingtons in the new coop/run. I get to keep a rooster that way. I'm still not sure whether to keep the Jubilee or the Chocolate roo (or maybe wait to see what hatches in a week and a half -- I have 11 more of Chicken Danz's English Orp eggs under my two perpetual broodies). I need to get serious about learning about the color genetics in the orps.

I am learning to glaze windows -- stupid me, I got windows with 6 panes, so there are lots of surfaces that have to be glazed, but I'm getting better at it. I've gotten them done. Some aren't very pretty, but they are solid. Next step will be to paint the inside surfaces and the edges where we trimmed off the rough edges. I have to get them done fairly soon because the lumber yard wants them to plan around as they build the thing. I can't paint the glazing for at least a week, so that will have to be done after they are installed probably. They say 3 weeks or so.

I know this is stupid and wasteful, but I really want to keep the orps. I guess I'm in the egg business next summer whether I want to be or not.

Oh Sharol, that is great news. I don't think you'll regret it at all. The jubilees sell much better than the chocolates if you think you might want to sell some chicks some day. Wasn't there some lavender eggs as well? If you wanted to wait and see what you hatch the lavenders are excellent non-stop sellers as well. At any rate they are all awesome layers. I hope you have a good hatch especially now since you'll have some room.
This forum has been so quiet. I can't believe the dead silence we've had lately. I am sure every one is getting used to the new school starting routine.
We got tons of rain yesterday and it is raining again this morning. Enough already! I have lots of work to do outside and the rain just keeps me from making any progress. I need to go get a load of feed today too and I sure don't want it getting wet. Looking at radar we might not be able to escape it.
I spent most of the afternoon yesterday working on the water system in the building to find out I am short two fittings I need. I am pretty sure I bought them, but I must have put them somewhere else. So I am kind of stuck until I can get more fittings. I will probably have to make a trip to Topeka to get them. I still have some things to do but most of it is up on a ladder and I don't have the strength to use the crimper without a surface to lean on. I am so anxious to get this thing finished. There's a lot more work but I kind of have to do things in order so I know how long to cut the pieces of PEX.
I got another dog yesterday. I certainly didn't need one. She is a 13 month old GP. Her owners have to travel for their jobs and it's too hard to find short term housing with a big dog. I hope she works out. She had never been around birds before but seemed to do pretty good yesterday, other than barking at the peacocks. She is not happy right now cause she is kenneled. Lousy weather for trying to acclimate a dog to this place.

Lucky dog to be living with you. I have 2 of the lav eggs still developing -- one was clear. One of the two has a tiny chip in the shell at the small end. I put a piece of tape over it and it is still developing (fingers crossed) and I have the one lavender pullet from the first hatch. Of the 4 jubilees from the first hatch, 2 are girls and 2 are boys. Mr question mark was trying to breed a hen yesterday and has started picking fights with the chocolate cockerel. 5 of the BBS eggs are still going strong, 4 jubilees (1 was clear at 1 week), and 1 of the mottles is still developing (but I'm not sure about it -- I'm going to take another look tomorrow when I kick the hens off the nest in the afternoon.) I can see why the lavenders and the jubilees sell -- they are really beautiful. I'll let you know after I candle tomorrow. I have to kick them off the nest. Really dedicated broodies, but they aren't eating and drinking without intervention. My DH says he can't imagine how chickens survived for thousands of years without my help. LOL

sharol it sounds like you have a project there with re-glazing windows. Good for you though, I like to see people repurpose things. You will be glad to have the Orps, they're really nice birds, very calm & big fluffy butts. I have 4 colors of them now & hope to have another color soon as well for breeding. They are a popular breed.

danz I'm glad you're getting your water system in, that will be great when you're done. It makes me envious with having to use hoses or buckets in the winter to water with. It takes forever. Congrats on the new GP, I know you were apprehensive about it. Are you going to try to re-home the other female?

I was hoping to do more painting today but it has rained now so that's out for the day. It seems like I'm never going to get this project done. I also decided while I had the paint I would paint all of my rabbit hutches since they had not had any paint on them. I sure opened a can of worms there.

Ha sharol, I wonder the same thing at times when I see a really determined hen setting on eggs. I have one right now that is so fiercely determined & she only gets off the nest at feeding time in the evening & then only very briefly. She got off of it the other evening when I was out feeding & one of my cats happened to walk close to her nest. She flew at that cat like a cougar & that poor cat didn't know what hit her. I'll bet she won't walk that close to her nest again!
