Consolidated Kansas

Welcome chicklover56. This is a VERY busy thread most of the time. It has been pretty quiet lately, but things will pick up again once we all have time to breathe and have the fall maintenance done.

Where are you from? What kinds of birds to you have (or want to have)?
I'm from Topeka, KS. I have 2 Black Sex Link, 2 Buff Orphington, 2 Americaunas, and 3 Mixes. I am in the process of rehoming my 2 roosters... I would just like to have my hens for edible, non-fertile eggs

. This is my first time with chickens, and so far I am loving it! I hope that my flock will bring me lots of happiness and eggs!

Welcome & feel free to jump in any time. We talk about a little of everything here besides chickens. It sounds like you have a good mix of breeds there. I raise a bunch of different breeds & hatch spring through about June. I'm taking my break right now from it.

Thank you! What breeds did/do you have and hatch?

Welcome! Are you aware that fertile eggs ARE edible? They are!
Yes. I don't know, but I would rather just have hens because I don't like my roosters picking on them. Also, my roosters pick on each other, and I can't just get rid of one, because they also are mean to my hens.
Thank you though!

Hi! I'm so glad to have found you guys. I'm new to the forum but have been lurking here for a couple weeks now. I live around the Miami/Johnson county area, and don't have birds yet. I'm planning on getting some peafowl and guineas in the spring for tick control since they were so bad this summer.

Anyway, hello to all and look forward to interacting here :)
Guineas and peafowl are a bit harder to train as pets, but the peafowl are easier than guineas. Food is the equalizer. I might also suggest some domestic non-flying ducks. Like Ancona, cayuga, pekin, etc. They are bug eating machines. I don't pen my ducks so they really aren't messy like some people experience. I'm probably within an hour or so of you. Not that far.
Quote: I think your garage will be fine as long as you are sure to provide some ventilation. You sure don't want them closed up tight. As soon as they are feathered in I would give them access to an outside pen so they can acclimate to winter. It works best if they can opt to go out on their own or return to warmer areas. The most important thing to guard against is drafts, particularly at the floor level. Normally north and west winds are the bad ones. The cement won't harm them at all. Just be sure to disinfect it before they get there and you add the bedding.
By the way, I've been away from BYC for awhile due to some health issues that cropped up (nothing serious, just painful). Any chance I missed where someone in Kansas suddenly has Bantam Ameraucana's available? I have emails to everyone on the directories list, and I'll be able to (hopefully) get one this Spring once they're in season again, but didn't want to not check and regret it. The little hen chick/pullet will be in my office with me over the winter, so it will get good care and plenty spoiled, if anyone has one who could use a pampered life. *nudge-nudge, wink-wink*

If you're in Kansas, I'll drive to you.
Welcome back. I honestly don't know of anyone who raises bantam Ameraucana's. Have you advertised looking for one of the facebook swap pages?
So sorry about your birds.

I just found this thread. I have been looking a long time for an active Kansas thread!
Welcome and glad you are here. Feel free to ask any questions you may have.

Welcome back danz, I'm glad you're doing some better. I'm sure it's going to take some time to recover from all you have gone through.

I'm still trying to recover from the crud I got on vacation & I'm still really messed up on the time of day. I can't seem to get synchronized to what time it's supposed to be. I'm sure the time change is affecting me as well.

I'm still trying to figure out how many birds I lost in my laying flock. I know I lost my favorite hen, the speckled sussex, of course it would be that one.

@Chicken Danz it is really good to have you back on. I'm glad you are well enough to be online. Hang in there, every day should get easier.
