re: pasty butt

I read years ago that adding ACV (apple cider vinegar WITH THE MOTHER -- I get Braggs) to chicks' water helps them avoid recurrences of pasty butt. It seems to be brought on by stress, so shipping would make it more common. I put a tablespoon of ACV in my chickens water (per gallon) on a regular basis. It may not help, but "it couldn't hurt" and my vet says it helps them fight off parasites, too.

@ChickenDanz I got my first Orpington pullet egg this morning. I had noticed that Snowflake (the white one, duh) had started squatting for the rooster, and today in a corner there was a little light brown egg -- just slightly larger than the Araucana pullet eggs I've been getting. Earlier than I thought -- just 26 weeks old. Yeah!!!!

I do have light in the coop from about 6:00 a.m. until the sun gets up and then from dark until 7 p.m., so I'm sure that is part of it.
Congrats. That was pretty fast for those big ole orps. They'll all be cranking them out soon.
Thanks me too she just looks more ragged then the rest I was just using a damp paper towel to wipe her after I pulled off the stuck poo. She is perky up a bit so will just contiue to watch her. Will keep everyone posted
Okay I have to disagree with all the other advice. I never use water or anything to remove a pasty butt. I just gently pull it off with my fingers. The reason a chick has pasty butt is due to stress and by wetting them down you create more stress. The chick fuzz usually pulls off with the poo but it really doesn't hurt them. I found any attempt to remove it with something damp just worsens the problem and causes it to reoccur. I use Sav-a-chick if I have chicks stressed for any reason. It's also probiotics and electrolytes
Gone all day and am really tired. I have 8 more weeks of no lifting restrictions. I've already bent the rules several times. I am going to have to go to physical therapy for a while. I hate to cause it normally seems like a waste of time and money. I can't imagine staying sedentary for that much longer.

Danz,
Omg thank you I completely forgot that I had ordered vitamins save a chick stuff with my chicks just went through their shipping box and it was under it I think i may have mixed it a bit strong but seeing as its in my water feeder i think it will be ok. Everyone is looking great expect Spunky the one with the butt issues and she is pooing ok so figure I will just keep watching it. Thanks ladies your a huge help!!!

Woke me up out of a dead sleep! Of course my hubby slept through it. We are just outside of Wichita. I heard that it was a 4.7 quake. Crazy!!

Sure seems there's been an awful lot of earthquakes in Oklahoma this year. I lived in OKC 10 years and we never had an earthquake you could feel. I think I'm in the right place. No shaking here with any of them. Let's hope all this oil country just south of me doesn't start fracking. I think most of the wells there are established so I hope they don't start new drilling.

I'm so stressed about the temperature this weekend. It's going to be so cold Saturday. I have a customer coming for pheasants and I don't really have a place to hold them or I'd go ahead and catch and pen them so I didn't have to be out in the cold.
I'm worried about freezing water. The heater isn't installed in my building yet and I hope it will stay warm enough in there to keep the water lines from freezing. I don't have any heated water bowls set up in the outside pens yet either.
I feel I am way behind on getting things done anyway and I'm not ready to deal with all this as well.
Since I was gone most the day yesterday I have a ton of catch up to take care of today.

Yeah our house shook like I've never seen it before, I about came up out of bed. It honestly shook so hard here that my teeth chattered from it. I had a really hard time going back to sleep after that. I could hear windows rattling in the house. My dogs didn't seem to be bothered by it at all, the ones in the house anyway. That one seemed a little too close for comfort. We're really close to OK & they have been having them in southern KS as well. I have to look at see where the epicenter was. I keep telling my DH we need to add earthquake coverage & he hasn't done it.

I got my other rooster yesterday afternoon, it only took one day to get him here from NC! He's a Leghorn & they're really flighty. I got him out to the quarantine pen & he said nope I'm not going in there & took off like a shot across the yard! I finally got him cornered over by my breeder pens & caught him with the net. He was none too pleased to be caught or to go into that pen.

Crazy. I didn't even know Kansas had earthquakes! On a different note, does anybody know what Fibro-Melanistic chickens are? I was looking for colloncas because I want a wide variety of blue eggers and they seem neat, and someone suggested I join a Fibro-Melanistic Fowl group. Anybody?
