danz I hear you on that, my DH just takes forever to even get started on something, the planning takes twice as long as it should & then he is so slow even doing something. Most of the time I don't work with him because we end up arguing & someone gets mad, so I usually just let him do something & tell him if he needs help to holler. I like working by myself most of the time as well unless I need help with something, then I can do it the way I want to. I'm not able to do heavy lifting now though so I need help with more things.

I got to see my son, grandson, & granddaughter for a little while this morning, it was nice to see them since I don't get to see them nearly as much as I would like to. My grandson is 2 now & boy is he acting like a 2 year old, today was a bad mood day.

I'm not looking forward to the storms I'm hearing are coming in. We can always use the rain, but the wind & hail we don't need. It did however scare some people into coming today instead of tomorrow since it's supposed to be raining & storming tomorrow too. We're actually forecast to have rain for about 4 days. I hate it when it rains that much, it really does make such a mess to deal with. I wish it would just rain a day here & there instead of all at once but I guess we shouldn't complain since we need it. With that much at once though we will see flooding around.

Glad you got to see the grandkids. That's awesome.

I'm about to have another chick die. This is the second one that I've seen do this and the other one died. This would be the 6th one if I can't save it. I finished treatment on both the Corid and Tylan 50. They are not able to stand or move their head when they do this. I was holding her a little bit ago but then I saw that you need to keep them warm so I put her under the heat lamp and came in to type this. Could it be because of some internal injury or something like that? I don't know much about chickens given that this is only my second year having them. Please help me if you can.

I was just afraid some of those chicks may have been to sick to recover. Now I'm thinking you have GOT TO check their food. If you have to, dump the bag into a 5 gallon bucket or two. Check out where you are keeping them as well to make sure there is no mold in the beeding or on the floor. Those symptoms sound and look like mold poisoning to me. Of course I can't see them in person, but once it infects them it's really hard to get them well. But you can sure try.
Moldy feed often causes Botulism. This is not contageous to you or each other but it can easily kill a chick. I have found these methods to treat it. I have no idea if any work but it's worth a try.:Just reduce the amounts to what you can use.
The following solutions or mixtures are recommended to flush the digestive system of toxic substances, most notably for treating birds exposed to botulism toxins.
Molasses Solution

Add one pint of molasses to 5 gallons of water​

Offer the drinking solution free-choice to the affected birds for about four hours. Treat severely affected birds individually if they cannot drink. Return the birds to regular water after the treatment period.
As a supportive treatment for symptoms resulting from Cryptosporidia infection, often referred to as coronaviral enteritis, use:

One quart molasses in 20 gallons of water​

Offer this solution free-choice for a period of up to 7-10 days. It is assumed that the molasses replaces certain minerals lost from diarrhea during the course of the infection.
Epsom Salt Solution

1 lb Epsom Salt per 15 lb feed
-or-
1 lb Epsom Salt per 5 gallons water for 1 day​

Give the epson salt feed mixture as the sole feed source for a one day period. This feed can be used only if the birds are eating. If the birds are not eating, use the water solution. If the birds are unable to eat or drink by themselves, use individual treatment with:

1 teaspoon of Epsom Salt in 1 fl oz water​

Place the solution in the crop of the affected bird. This same amount of solution will treat 5-8 quail or one chicken.
Castor Oil Therapy
Dose individual birds with .5 oz castor oil.

Had a nice visit with @Dani4Hedgies today.
I didn't get all the things done today I intended. I ran out of energy before I got done. I got the garden planted and decided I really need one about 3 times bigger. Oh well. Maybe I will keep things at a controllable level with less room. I still need to find a place to plant watermelon and sweet potatoes for sure. I thought sure I was going to get rained out but it didn't happen so I ended up putting a little water on it just to set the seeds. I tried to do some mowing cause the weeds were getting really high but ended up making the blade belt smoke so I quit. Tomorrow I'll drive it up on the ramps. I imagine some of those weed stalks got tangled in the pulley.
I managed to move one, and only one bird I intended to. I moved a young blue orpington rooster into the BBS pen. I had pulled my big mottled boy out yesterday. I'm hoping to produce a lot more blue and splash chicks now and not so many blacks.
One of my red roosters I had caged apparently got started or something and gave himself a concusion. He appears fairly normal but is having spasms. I pulled him out and put him in the old garage. He is eating and drinking but not holding his balance real well. He was fine earlier then was acting weird this afternoon. I gave him some vitamin E to reduce brain swelling. I hate to see him suffer. I hope he recovers soon. If not I may have DH cull him in a few days. Poor thing. Its so discouraging when I can't do anything but basic care.
Guess I need to run outside and shut the brooder house doors. It's about time for the birds to go to bed.

Thanks for letting Sydney and me come down and talk your ear off we had a wonderful visit as well and are so excited to present your wonderful eggs to the kids on Monday they are going to be so happy and then in 21 days we will let you know how many new fluffy butts we end up with

So sorry to hear about your Rooster hope he makes a complete recovery.

Oh and Blue Diamond the double gold we were talking about not having any tail feathers now has like 10 that are opening up silly birds lol.

Well they were the freshest eggs I had. All but two of them, a jubilee and a lavender that were laid yesterday, so hopefully the hatch will go well. I'd love to see the kids faces when they see them hatch. I'm sorry I didn't have more time. I hate being so busy this time of year.

Well I got 36 chicks out of here today, everyone showed up one right after the other, yay! That sure helped my brooder where the new chicks go, that is until tomorrow when more are due to hatch. I keep thinking my Sebastapol goose is going to hatch those eggs any day & she's still sitting, soon I hope.

@chicken danz thank you. What would the mold look like in the food? Would it be the gray fuzzy or is it black? If it is black, then the pellets have black on them.

Chicklover i just found some mold in my chick feed and it was blue somewhat fuzzy needless to say that was dumped on the compost pile thankfully I use auto feeders which were filled serveral weeks ago and there was none in them just in the bag which it was clear that the bag had gotten wet which caused it in mine. Not sure if this is a help to you or not.

I'm new to BYC and chickens too! Read over the last two weeks posts and am wondering what preventive care I can do for my chicks other than medicated feed. I have 4 broiler chicks that are about 6 weeks old in my coop and 4 layers in a indoor brooder that are a week old. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

@chicken danz thank you. What would the mold look like in the food? Would it be the gray fuzzy or is it black? If it is black, then the pellets have black on them.

You probably won't see it at all unless the food is clumped together. You would smell it.

Welcome to our little Kansas group.
My recommendations are these: Keep their area warm and clean. Make sure they always have food and water. On nice warm days let the birds go outside and get some exposure to the grass and sunshine. I'd wait on the week olds until they are around 3 weeks old though.

Three weeks was about what I figured. I waited four weeks to take my older chicks out.
Still raining here in Wichita, but I went out and took some pictures. I bought these at a local feed store and they called them "frypan chicks". Any idea what breed they are?
