I'm sure I'm going to have extra roosters to get rid of later on myself. I'm growing out chicks for replacements for hens in my laying flock & I know some will turn out to be roosters, no question about it. Yes it is much easier if you have a mean or ornery rooster to butcher him than if he's a nice one. I am needing another flock rooster but I'm sure I will have lots of choices coming up.

I have people coming tomorrow to pick up more chicks, 36 of them are leaving hopefully tomorrow, yay!

I wish I had people coming to get chicks but then I really don't want to deal with many either. I do have two different people coming to get eggs today. I don't normally sell hatching eggs but these are exceptions. One of them is coming for pheasant eggs. I've been gathering them and the pheasant are sold pending pickup so I have no reason to hatch the eggs. I don't want to start over!!! It's hard enough to make myself sell them in the first place.
I need to do some counting and replace some adds and see what I can get rid of around here.
I do have several growing out for my own use for breeding as well. I've been meaning for days to get them moved around and sorted but other things have taken presidence.
I hope to get the rest of the garden planted today. That's a lot of work in itself. Hopefully I'll find time to sort birds too.

Truly. I planted a bunch of stuff yesterday as I'd like the seeds in the ground before this rain comes, so they can get watered in and start thinking about germinating. I still have a bunch more to do today. I am aching and sore from all the work I did yesterday. It will be nice when I start to see this stuff sprouting but at this point all it is, is work. I came in hot and sweaty from being out in the sun - and it wasn't even a hot day, just a pleasantly warm one.

Danz,
If you would like help with the gardening my friend and I would be happy to stay and help you for a bit after all your helping us out so much we would be happy to return the favor :)

That is a very sweet offer. I however, am a person that always works alone. Just like my Dad unfortunately. I used to try to help him and he'd end up yelling at me. I understand that now, cause I am exactly the same way. I tend to slow down when people help cause I can't really communicate what I want done. I often don't know it myself until I am doing it. I also don't feel comfortable telling people what to do. It never turns out the way I expect and I end up redoing things.
Yeah I'm a weirdo.
There are a few people I can work with because of their take charge personality and the type of things we work on together. They are more knowledgeable than me and work really fast. DH IS NOT one of those people!!!

danz I hear you on that, my DH just takes forever to even get started on something, the planning takes twice as long as it should & then he is so slow even doing something. Most of the time I don't work with him because we end up arguing & someone gets mad, so I usually just let him do something & tell him if he needs help to holler. I like working by myself most of the time as well unless I need help with something, then I can do it the way I want to. I'm not able to do heavy lifting now though so I need help with more things.

I got to see my son, grandson, & granddaughter for a little while this morning, it was nice to see them since I don't get to see them nearly as much as I would like to. My grandson is 2 now & boy is he acting like a 2 year old, today was a bad mood day.

I'm not looking forward to the storms I'm hearing are coming in. We can always use the rain, but the wind & hail we don't need. It did however scare some people into coming today instead of tomorrow since it's supposed to be raining & storming tomorrow too. We're actually forecast to have rain for about 4 days. I hate it when it rains that much, it really does make such a mess to deal with. I wish it would just rain a day here & there instead of all at once but I guess we shouldn't complain since we need it. With that much at once though we will see flooding around.

My DH and I just went to get the mail. I caught Ethan's cold and haven't been feeling well. I had to call him home from work yesterday 'cuz I couldn't take care of myself and my little guy. He's off today, thank goodness, and he really wanted to go get the mail and see how the roads were. WE took a family "trip" to the mailbox. Since I was out (first time since I got sick), i decided to check on my birds. Apparently, my chicken coop isn't as water tight as I had hoped. the whole south side (where the majority of my birds are) was wet. The rain was leaking in through some larger nail holes on the top and it was leaking in at the ends where there's a seam between the tin top and the wood siding. I ended up having my DH caulk the holes where he could (NOT easy in the rain) and then put some buckets in the areas where it was still dripping. I then turned the straw so the dryer stuff was on top and put the majority of the chickens ont he North side. I put the 3 I got from Danz on the south side, making sure to put the heat lamp and their food and water in the driest area I could find. I hadn't had any heat on for the birds for the last few days (lows int eh 50's high in the 70's), but today they all seemed cold. I turned a heat lamp and the sweater heater on for the bigger birds and one heat lamp for the smaller birds. I hope I don't end up with a bunch of sick chickens by the time this storm is over! The birds themselves were dry, but the straw in their coop definitely was not! It wasn't soaked, just damp. When it stops raining, I'll have to go out and try to put some dry straw in for them. In the meantime, if I try to uncover the straw bale, it'll get soaked in the process, as well as any "dry" straw getting soaked trying to move it to the coop. Ugh! Rain is nice, but it sure does cause a few extra headaches!

Now that I'm back inside, it's time for me to take a nap. This cold sure has taken a lot out of me!

I'm about to have another chick die. This is the second one that I've seen do this and the other one died. This would be the 6th one if I can't save it. I finished treatment on both the Corid and Tylan 50. They are not able to stand or move their head when they do this. I was holding her a little bit ago but then I saw that you need to keep them warm so I put her under the heat lamp and came in to type this. Could it be because of some internal injury or something like that? I don't know much about chickens given that this is only my second year having them. Please help me if you can.
