Consolidated Kansas

I did find out it is foxes that got the birds, did some tracking and found out they live under an abandoned house, nice warden from wildlife and parks is helping deal with them.
Thanks again for everyone's input

Does anyone know of anyone who has Sweetey Heaters for sale? Also I have a brooder that has a single eye hook to hang the light from can this be used for a SH too? Thanks

Ok, all... I need advice.. What do I do with a soaking wet chicken? One of my special birds spent the night outside last night and is soaked. I brought him in and put him int he house, gave him some food and some warm water. Is there anything else I can do for him?

I would just dry it with a towel. Hypothermia can be a big issue, especially for juveniles, so if you can, wrap it in a towel and then tuck it into your shirt until it warms back up.

We use a blow dryer on low. They love it. Well ours did

Nasco educational supply has the best price after you add shipping for sweeter heaters. I don't know of any on sale right now.

I dry mine with a hair dryer or put a space heater blowing on them after drying them with a towel. You need to get them warmed up and dry as quickly as possible.

I had to turn the heat back on in the house this morning. It was pretty chilly in here. Just low enough to be uncomfortable. I've been getting another load of geese ready to ship. I really need to get another load of feed today as well but it's another rainy day. Come on sunshine I need you!!!

I guess I'm the odd man out. Don't own a hair dryer and don't know what I'd do with one if I did (other than dry chicks with it).

I think I have a hermaphrodite chicken. This bird hatched last year sometime and over the winter I noticed it never seemed to grow. It is a barred rock and my heritage barred rocks are normally large birds that grow relatively quickly so I put it down to it being winter and there not being as much forage. But come spring, this bird was still really small and that's when I really started to pay attention as I realized it was old enough it should be full-grown. Then I realized I still didn't know what gender it is, even though by now it has to be 8 months old at least. Barred Rocks are normally easy to tell because the bars are black/white if a hen or white/black if a rooster. This has the barring of a rooster but comb and feathering is girly (no hackle or sickle feathers and the tail is not exactly roosterish but not exactly hennish either). And like I said, it is still really small - about the size of a leghorn. The other odd thing about this bird is the way it walks. For want of a better way of describing it, it walks like a nazi - high stepping. It is part of the flock and yet a loner - like all the others recognize it is different as well. So it is always off by itself. I doubt it will ever lay an egg but time will tell.

@Dani4Hedgies it depends on what size sweeter heater you're looking for. I noticed Nasco doesn't have the small 11x16 overhead unit now, I don't know if they're just out of stock or just don't carry it now. I checked a couple of places & if you want that one Strombergs Poultry has it cheaper than others. I had actually gotten my last bigger one at My Pet Chicken but that was only because I got free shipping & Nasco charged shipping plus I think they were on sale then. They're more pricey than other heaters but they sure are nicer & more consistent with heat. I have 4 of them in use here.

@HEChicken that is strange about that Barred Rock, I'll bet you're right.

I had a hen get soaked last night because she can't seem to figure out where to go roost. I went out between rains to shut the run door & there she was all huddled up on top of the rocks by my other pen next to the coop. I picked her up & took her into the coop, hopefully she got dried out overnight.

We had a surprise lamb born last evening. I have one ewe that is really wooly & I couldn't tell if she was pregnant or not & yesterday evening I was out feeding between rains & she was acting kind of strange. She didn't eat & would stand & baa or go into the shelter & paw the floor. So when I went out to shut the run door at about 10:00 last night I went down to the sheep pen & I heard a little voice in the shelter. I shined my flashlight in there & low & behold there was a tiny little lamb, surprise, surprise. This ewe was a twin at birth but they often will just have one the first time.

Trish,
Im looking for a medium one for my Brooder and a large one for my coop so depending on if there is a price difference if not would make sense to go with the one who includes shipping

Thanks, everyone, for the input ont he wet chicken. I put him inside on some dry straw and put a heat lamp on him till he dried. He got awfully feisty once he dried off! He's been back outside for an hour or so now and seems to be doing as good as could be expected considering he spent the night outside AND lost his friend He's one of the birds I got from Danz and is now the only one remaining of the ones I got from her. Something (possibly our puppy) got the sussex hen last night.

Why is it that stuff always has to happen to the special birds?
