Consolidated Kansas

Oh no, its a leghorn. LOL - I guess you forgot. Here is what you wrote at the time:
This chick has the yellow legs like the others and looks identical to the older group - just a little smaller since its younger. Of course I am calling them Buff Leghorns because they all came out looking 100% buff - that rooster's genes must really be dominant. I'm hoping they carry the mottling gene per their mothers though, so next generation might carry some spots.

This morning the LGDs were barking at something frantically in the pasture. I figured it was probably a snapping turtle but I put on my boots to go and investigate and found it was a huge snake - it looked like the adult version of the pile of snakes I found the other day. Nearby was a dead fish so I picked it up, only to have it wiggle in my hand. I ran and threw it in the pond and then spent the next hour going around finding more. In all, I put 52 live fish and a live bullfrog tadpole back in the pond. Most of them were very fortunate to be alive - they were lying really on just wet ground, with maybe ⅛" inch of water and I'm amazed they were able to live long enough that way for me to rescue them. Of course, I'm sure I just threw them back in the pond so they can become a meal for the herons and egrets that spend all day fishing here

Yeah I did forget but I had sold two chicks to someone else for a broody hen right before you got those two & it was them that got the Buff Orp chick.

I find it ironic that ya'll are complaining about the rain. We've had rain in the forecast several times and have missed out several times. WE could actually use the rain. Anyone care to share???
Lizzy we would glady send some your way, we're just overwhelmed with it all over here. The ground is so saturated that there is nowhere for more water to go so it's just sitting on the ground in places. The rivers are coming out of their banks as well. The fairgrounds here in town are already flooded.

Good morning! I'm from the Kansas city area. This is my first chicken experience. I have 8 chicks, but fear that I may have a few roos.
Welcome to the KS thread. Tell us about your chicks, we always like to hear about what people have & if you take pics share those as well.

I'm still hatching guinea keets, I have had some hatch 3 days early even, crazy little things. I sent 25 home with someone yesterday & 15 the day before that. I should have my last order ready soon for those. I had one escape the other day when I was trying to move them to my crate to count & it just jumped out on the floor & disappeared. I couldn't find it & then the next day it was yelling from under the brooder & I went to catch it & my Yorkie got it first. She is so tiny she can get under things I can't so she caught it & she must have broken it's neck.

I have been sick all day body aches and sore throat and to top my awful day in bed the roof to my duck run has been ripped of by this horrible wind

How old are they. What did you buy? You can post pictures and we can make an educated guess if they are at least feathering.
Welcome to the forum.

I will take pictures latest or tomorrow, but I have 2 cuckoo marans, 3 buff orpingtons and 3 ameraucanas (or ee's as it may be, but sold as ameraucanas). We picked them out 4 weeks ago tomorrow. I think one of them is a little older, but not by much.

Is there any other kind of basement? I never make it down there unless I'm looking for something I've shoved in with all the other junk. I only dream of having it cleaned up. Let alone the rest of the house. Sorry you're sick today. I noticed some chickens acting a little congested in one pen today. It's really muddy in there but I can't change that right now.
Well another front just made it here and there are some nasty shelf clouds out there. Temp dropped really quickly. Maybe we are on the right side of the storm this time. Hope hope.

I guess having a clean basement is just a wish! My home stays mess all the time I'm forever thinking I'm the only person in the world with that issue in glad I'm not! This house came to us with a messy everything! I'm working my way through areas and buildings step by step. With lots of dreams of a nice clean home and out buildings. I get lost online looking at farms that are kept nice and tidy wondering how it's done. The most I shoot for on a day to day basis is a clean kitchen and even that is not ever really clean. (Well maybe when I'm home alone and the mood strikes) my 7 year old has now ODed on Popsicles and I can't send the maniac out to play! Lmao i do love the rain because I can lay down and not feel awful about working in my garden! It gives me lots of time to make todo lists I will forget all about! I'm thankful that my chickens are nice and dry the coop I have is on the other side of the goose run in a semi trailer so they stay dry and warm even if it's nasty outside.

The four eggs that my broody abandoned last Saturday to attack the other broody's chicks are hatching. I almost threw them out Tuesday, but I candled them and could see movement. 3 of the 4 are hatched and big healthy chicks -- 1 Jubilee 2 color mix English Orpingtons (from Danz's lines). The 4th is pipped at the wrong end and cheeping. I picked at the pip (it has been 12 hours, but there was a tiny bit of blood so I put it back in the incubator. I'd like to help, but that doesn't usually turn out well for me. (maybe 50/50). Tomorrow before daylight, I'm going to try to get these under the Araucana that is setting on eggs due early next week, and then put her eggs in the incubator.

The white orp had her 2 babies out in the yard today. When the storm moved in, I scooped them up (much to her displeasure) and put them back in the coop. Of course she followed them back in. I have them in a fabric pen with a top that is inside the big coop to protect them from the other hens and to confine her when she gets aggressive with hens wanting to come in to lay.

You and me both on the rain. I feel like it's never going to stop raining! I can't get my garden work done, it's driving me insane! My goose is loving it though and so are the pigs. I walked into my duck run this morning and one of my Swedish blues was having a great time bathing in rain runoff. I've been kicking myself for not fixing the roof on my coop on the few days of sun we had but seeing my ducks have such a great time in the puddles made me feel better. I was slipping and sliding all over the mud when I went to feed my birds, I guess it was a free amusement ride for me. My 7 year old was whining about his boots having no traction lol (as if I could help, I was sliding worse than him) my floors are a mess I have old wood floors that I cannot keep clean with 7 kids and let me tell you it's so much worse in this nasty rain! I am really starting to wonder why I moved to the land of mud and wet! :he not to mention the stupid CATS! I can't keep the cats out of the house! I am running around chasing cats like a complete crazy woman even my kids are starting to talk behind my back! Need I go on about this weather!

On a good note I have not had to water the few plants I got in the garden!

The reason is being to be too much! I agree that my garden, at least what I've been unable to tend is horrible. My sugar snap peas are growing like weeds, at least that is how it appears from the side of the garden.

YOU HAD TO SAY WEEDS! Lmao I went out to pull weeds and they have taken over. They are as high as my corn! I'm so mad. I even tried to bribe my rotten children into pulling them. we went out and I could not tell them what was weeds and what was food! I guess we will eat weeds this first year! And my stinking pigs decided to eat my broccoli. I let them free range and the little sneaks found a way in. ( I don't really have rotten kids maybe half rotten ) if those pigs eat any more of my garden I'll be eating bacon sooner rather than later. the goose is so mad at me because I won't let him and the ducks out. He screams the whole time I'm outside! He is so ungrateful he has a huge run its as long as a semi bed and twice as wide and all he shares it with are five small ducks. I am feeling better though the sun was out today. At least I was better until a strange chocolate lab showed up and the kids decided to feed him. I hope he goes home the silly thing even came inside and tried to sleep in my room. I already warned him not to mess with my birds or he will have a BB in his butt. My pittmix and my pug are very well behaved and I won't tolerate any nonsense from a stray. I hope I don't sound to heartless.

Lol! My kids want to take in every animal we see. I can take no more. I'm honestly a little happy that I have a couple of roosters. I ended up buying more chicks than I really wanted to begin with. I'm just disappointed that one of my cuckoo marans is a roo.

Isn't it always the way?  Whenever something like that happens, I always find myself saying "I don't have time for this" or "This is not a good time for this to happen".  Funny thing, is, I NEVER catch myself saying "This would be a good day to have my car break down" :lau   So I guess there really is never a good time to have things happen.

It is a perfect comparison. I don't ever seem to have time for mishaps, though I can tell you that when things do go wrong, I REALLY don't have time for them.

I'm so sorry about your roof and feeling bad. The storms were pretty bad, here. I was in the middle of conducting interviews at work when the tornado sirens went off at home. My four kids were home alone and scared. All is well, though. I'm just glad that I called and gave them a heads up and quickly reviewed or tornado safety rules between interviews.

Oh, and our basement is a mess and flooded to boot.
