Ok let me qualify here: Adult beverage. I am not a bird hoarder! Puppy mills turn my stomach, and crappy poultry pens are so sad. There are no laws to protect Arkansas breeding projects in chickens, but God is there; its called "fertility issues”. You know guys; I just have a flock of about 20 chickens in my back yard. There are many breeds and only one roo. I change roos to improve my flock. In short I don’t need some brother on sister many generation heritage flocks. I don’t need to pay $30 a bag for feed, when I can get it for $10 as my bird’s free range. I love each and every one of my birds and give them the best of compost. I have nothing to sell you; I have no need for tuna or drama. I have lost sleep over this issue. No I am not pouting with a Kleenex. Should I continue here, or just unsubscribe? In today’s world my flock feeds at least 6 families. I am just so sad to see you bragging and joking about hording! Those chickens crapping on each other don’t deserve your lack of value. The best of livestock keepers truly value their livestock. Which one are you?????

I have 20 acres and about 200 birds. I don't think my birds are crowded at all. I don't live in a city, my birds free range during the day, have nice coops at night. I feed them expensive food (what kind isn't?) And even cook treats like rice and veggies for them occasionally. My birds produce eggs and I sell them to individuals and restaurants. It may sound strange but I know every one of my birds and know if someone isn't in at night. I hatch some individual kinds of chicks and sell those to help pay for my expenses.
And even if someone does live in town, that doesn't mean their birds are crowded or do without. I've seen some awesome setups in back yards with ample vegetation and of course the bugs that go along with it.
I have my birds because I really enjoy them. Plus, if it weren't for them I would be totally crippled by now. Caring for them has helped my physical problems immensely. It makes me get up and move and work past the pain.
I don't agree with puppy mills either, but my working dog is about to have her one and only litter of puppies before she and her mate are both neutered. She is a purebred good quality dog and my own vet is the one who suggested I breed her. My dogs protect my birds from predators and that is why I have them.
And yes I'm hoarder and it can be a problem. But in this case it's not.
Besides, what part of 'we are having fun' did you miss? Come on! Lighten up and just enjoy the camaraderie.

Hmmm...ummmm....Ahhh...sorry to have stepped into whatever I stepped in? Maybe Ozawkie Bantams could make a characture of yellow smiley bubble blowing up?

My apologies Mikeksfarmer, I was just jesting. I/we find chickens very fascinating with the added benefit that they supply food for our table and many others. My boys and my hubby take care of naming boys and girls alike. It seems not a day goes by without someone talking about adding another breed. Do we? No, it's called discipline. But to many of my friends and acquaintances by having any birds at all, we are off our rocker. And when we do hatch chicks, they do joke that pretty soon our 10 acres will be full...I drool over chickens the way some women drool over shoes or a purse, with one exception - it can't just be pretty - it needs to have a good work rate which to me means number of eggs produced for the amount of feed consumed. And then, when necessary, provide an excellent dinner for a table.

I'm about being green, local, sustainable along with teaching my boys where their food comes from, how to raise and how to financially manage it.

So, with that time to go collect eggs with my youngest and see which new pullet laid today!

If you saw the way my backyard is full of lush grass crawling in banties, you would not take 'hoarding' to mean anything other than 'spreadin' the love to a whole bunch of birdies!'

I have to say again, I know each and every bird. They aren't all named but each one has a unique characteristic about it. When I've lost a bird I've been heartbroken just like I would have been for any other pet I've owned. I built my coops out of all recycled products. I live off the land as much as I can and recycle everything possible into something else.
You can find the extremes any where, whether it be raising chickens, dogs, cattle, or having kids. If you had seen my birds at a recent swap meet you would have known they are quality birds that are well taken care of; not someone's left over poorly kept caged bird.
And as far as vets being doctors my first question to you is; What kind of an education do you have that allows you to judge others? I don't have some cutesy dog running around the house. I have hard working protective dogs that earn their weight in gold every day.
Did it make me think? Yes it did. It made me think you jump to conclusions without the facts.
