Consolidated Kansas

Lizzy Uh what a start to a Friday morning hugs hope the kiddos crash for a bit and you can lay down with them and get some sleep I remember those days :)

Danz,
So sorry to hear about your rooster and your hand still giving you problems I really hope that they are able to help you get that healed fast. If you need some help tomorrow I can come down and bring a couple sets of hands to help? can't believe we never talked about Icelandic I have been spending the last year trying to see if anyone within a few states of us had them and for God only knows what reason never thought to ask you please add me to your list for when you have Icies for adoption. Also you had mentioned that you have some feathered feet Rocks if you decide not to keep them please let me know as I would like to adopt them :) all my rocks I got from the hatchery and am down to just 1 due to loses and helping others start their flocks and as no one pecks at feathered feet in my flock I know they would fit right in.

I've been meaning to post this for some time and just haven't been up to it. I just wanted to brag a little on my geese. Got this picture and these facebook messages. As many of you know I shipped my Sabastopol geese all over the U.S. this spring. I've had really good reports on how they turned out. This message was a real point of pride for me.

Yes ! The babies I got from you this May

Congrats, Danz!

Another broody question for ya'll. Do I need to candle eggs? If so, when and what do I look for? I gave the eggs to the broody on 10/27 and they were fresh eggs from that day. What's the next step? When do I expect to see little balls of fluff?

Wait 21 days. They should hatch then or shortly after. I wouldn't candle them when they are under your broody. Just let nature take it's course. If nothing happens by day 23 then it would be time to get them candled. Most likely the smell will be enough to tell you they are viable.
When I have a broody sitting I only candle if she has hatched chicks and left the nest. Or if it's obvious a rotten one broke and you want to get rid of other rotten ones. I try not to bother a broody unless it's really necessary.
Congrats, Danz!

Wow - Those are beautiful geese.

Thank you. I've worked hard on my geese to get them as nice as possible. They are my pride and joy.

Congrats Danz, that's great!

My week has been a blur. Not chicken related so I won't bore you all with the details but between stress and sleep deprivation, I apologize if I missed a post.

Danz, congrats on the show results for those Sebbies. You deserve to feel proud!

Lizzy, I don't candle eggs under broody hens. I candle when they are in the incubator but access is easy and removing clear eggs frees up space to set more. But under the broody I just let them go. Since I have always given the eggs to the hen, I know they are all due at the same time so I just remove any that don't hatch after she leaves the nest and call it good.

Another week went by and I didn't get my chicken coop cleaned out. Fingers crossed this next week is better and I get it done before the cold weather arrives.
