Hello folks,

A question and information!

Question: just out of curiosity, really...I noticed a while back that Blinky the RIRed was coming out from the roost in the morning and doing a huge poop. Since I had read that they did most pooping during the night while roosting I was wondering why she would save it up until she got outside. Then, more recently I have noticed her spending more time in the nesting box. Often in the evening when I go to close them in she is in there and I've even seen her in the morning. There is little or no poop in the nest. Is she broody? without a rooster and just herself and Pinky laying eggs? I don't see a problem anyway, but interested in others' take on it.

Information: there was a post from someone in Lawrence recently who was interested in learning about chickens.
Probably to correlate with this winter's book selection, the library is having a "Chickens 101" presentation by the County Ext. people and others. 2-3 pm Feb. 12. New chicken people (and others too!) might find it useful.

It sounds like your hen is broody, they do that if they're sitting, they will come out & take a break & do their business & eat.

Oh I keep forgetting to tell everyone I got this DVD on Netflix called "Chicken People" & watched it. If you all have a chance try to get it & watch it, it's pretty entertaining. I'm going to have my DH watch it with me again, maybe he'll learn that I'm not the only chicken crazy person out there.

Hello, fellow Kansans! I am fairly new to BYC and have been lurking on this thread as I see it pop up here and there and thought it is high time I introduce myself. My name is Titia (pronounced Teesha, short for Letitia) and I live near Hesston, so pretty much right in the center of the state. I am a stay at home mom to 5 kids between 2 and 9 years. We were city folk that moved out to our old farmhouse about 3 1/2 years ago to try our hands at country life and fell.in.love! We currently have a mixed flock of 20 chickens...3 blue Ameraucanas (@Trish44 I'm pretty sure I got them from you close to a year ago?), a few Plymouth rocks, Buff Orpington, Speckled Sussex, Isbars, Black Copper Marans...I'm sure I'm missing something, but we're all over the place. Anyway, I'm thinking of adding a few ducks to the mix, but have come up empty at finding anybody near here with any ducks at all...anybody here have ducks?

It does sound like she is going broody.

Congrats rlh1! Did you find an incubator to use. I was going to offer you one but I've been so busy I haven't been on here for a couple of days.

Welcome @TeeMom . I am a Mom of 5 as well, but they are all grown and now I am a grandma of 5, grat grandmother of 1, and another grandchild on the way.
Living in the country is great isn't it? I know someday I'll probably have to move back to town or at least closer to town because of age, but I will fight it till the end. I do have several ducks. In domestic ducks I raise Anconas, Pekin, and Cayuga. Just sold all my Ancona today. If you are interested in adult ducks I have many pekin hens, and at least one drake. They are just starting to lay for this spring. I also have some half Cayuga with half pekin or Anconas that are almost laying age. Not sure how many are males or females cause I haven't counted them. I'd like to sell as many as possible on the cheap. This year I am going to strictly Cayuga. Send me a message if you are interested.
I'm about 2 hours from you. Not really all that far and might be able to meet you part way if the time was right.

So as things go, I mentioned I've been too busy to be online. It's been one of those weeks. As if I didn't have more than I could handle anyway Murphey's law took over and further threw my schedule out of wack. Next week is stacking up to be even crazier. I have said, "this is way more than I can handle" more than once this week.
I am truely questioning why I make myself do so much.

Chicken Danz,
Thank you for the offer. I just might need an incubator still. We will see how this goes. Opal is offher nest with her 7, so I moved the others under Pinky. We will have another 3-5 hatching in the next few days. My plan is to move those back to Opal so that Pinky will keep itting on the ones that will take another week or so. I sure have learned my lesson with this one. I was not expecting my other hens to crawl in there and lay their eggs in opals nest. Unfortunately I didn't know about it until those eggs had already started developing.

Can somebody tell me when geese in this area start laying and what time of day do they lay?

If anyone needs a Pilgrim gander, please, please, contact me. So far they have eaten my dog, two screen doors, every sapling planted around the house, ate holes in the high tunnel, the wiring on the truck, central air, and trailers and crap constantly on the porch and sidewalk.

Welcome, we're glad to have you! You probably bought the blue Ameraucanas I was selling then as I sold them out & got a whole new breeding group of lavenders from Smith I will be hatching from this year. I raise Ancona ducks if I'm closer to you than Danz. Send me a PM if you're interested in ducklings later on. They're not back to laying as of yet but should be soon.

Oh man it sounds like you have had some real fun with your geese! I have Sebastapols & haven't had any problems like that with them. (knock on wood) Danz could answer your question about laying better than I could. Mine haven't laid yet this year but are starting to get into breeding season as my ganders are fighting. I know about the mess on the concrete though, mine come up & sit right on the front porch as well as my chickens when it's windy or cold & I come out the door to have to dodge it all to even get out. The other day I had an egg customer come & I'm sure she didn't even want to walk up to the front door, it was embarrasing but there is nothing I can do about it since I have no fences to keep them away from there. Oh BTW, the female guineas I got from you guys are doing fine, just settling in. I hope to have lots more eggs this year to fill orders. I think the bugs will be even worse this year due to the mild winter. I have even seen some flying things out already.

I scratched my eye yesterday, I think I had something fly in my eye out in the wind while doing chores & since I wear contacts it just got underneath & every time my eye moved it scratched some more. So I am having to go without the contacts today & wear my new glasses I have not worn before that I just got last year for backups. Thank goodness I got some or I would be in a world of hurt right now. I am pretty blind without correction. These glasses are no line bifocals & I'm having quite a time with them, so if I have typos I wouldn't be surprised. It was an adventure going out to put the pup back in the dog run this morning going up & down that hill.

Danz I think we all have to adjust to what works for our situation with the LGDs. With this 3rd one I'm doing things totally different than I did with my other two & it seems to be working. I think we all have to get through the puppy stage the best we can, they all get better with things as they mature. I had two females that were spayed fairly young & I know that helped but they also had each other to play with rather than the birds so much. GPs also are more sensitive dogs than the Anatolians & I'm finding that out with this pup I got since he is half Anatolian & half GP. I can see what you mean though about the males maturing slower, he is at 5 months very much a big puppy. He is starting to pay attention when the other dogs bark though, I saw him taking off down the hill yesterday evening when the dogs started barking. He stays so far mostly by the front door & I don't mind that since my main coop & another pen are across the driveway from the house, the other two spread out on opposite sides, one is usually uphill & the other downhill so they can cover the sides where the predators mostly come up to. He has been staying out from about dusk to when I get up in the morning & go take him back to the dog run. He is really tired by then & goes willingly in there where he sleeps all day till I feed him in the afternoon & then he takes a nap till time to come out. He is getting used to the cats & the guineas so that is a positive sign. When he first came out he chased everything in sight & wouldn't stop even when I yelled at him. The guineas that I have out in the yard for ticks roost in the trees at night above the guinea hoop coop & just free range, so if he can learn to leave them alone next we'll graduate to him being out with the chickens. He just has thought anything that runs is a big toy, so he has to get over that stage before I trust him to be out with all of the free range birds. I think it makes a difference too as to what the pup has been around where he/she was born. My pup was in a fenced area with goats but the free range chickens were on the other side of the fence so he was not directly in with them. The pups could see them but not interact with them.
