Lizzy it could be any number of things but if she is breathing hard she certainly could have caught a cold. Are you letting her out to get sunshine during the day. Vitamin D and E, and B are essential to their health, and free ranging is the best way to get those

After losing several of her chicks to what I believe was the puppy, I have kept the mama hen and her remaining chick locked up in the North side of the coop. Since it has been nice the last few days, i have kept them in a large dog cage outside, making sure they have the opportunity for sunshine if they want it. My Dh is home today, so I've had him watch the dog while the mama and her baby free range. Mama seems to still be injured and isn't walking around much, but at least she isn't breathing hard like she was the previous day. I have stopped the Tylan and will just watch her. She seems to be doing better after a few days of the Tylan so we'll see how she does from here on out. She is definitely limping still so I'm assuming she's managed to hurt her leg somehow.

I'm glad she's doing a little better. Maybe a little sun will help. I took my three birds that are currently in the house. (Two that weren't feeling good) and One Wing and let them play in the garden all afternoon. Maybe in a day or two I'll get the two back out to the pens.
I sorted and moved birds and added on to a couple runs in the building today. I'm trying to get every thing ready for testing tomorrow. I really wanted to get a pen of roosters butchered and one turkey but there was no time and absolutely no energy. Tomorrow is going to be a very hard day. Lots of work.

Today is the day....chicks are arriving! Brooder just got plugged in to warm up and be ready. I am about halfway into building their coop its going well. Its 8x12, and half of it will have two levels. Hoping to fit 30 or 40 birds comfortably when done. I'll get some pictures up as I continue...I've been lazy.

Oh....and remember when I said I was looking for some cheap eggs to put in the incubator? Instead...I fell in love with some Exchequer leghorn eggs that were on auction here....so I bought those. Total cost $30 for 8 eggs, and of course trying to hatch shipped eggs first time :S. Good news is that we are at day 4 and everything has run steady and perfect and air cells were in pretty good shape when they arrived, just plugged in the turner today. Cross your fingers.

Also, this guy showed up early yesterday but mama and baby are doing good! Got 300 head coming home today and we are going to get busy in a couple weeks, with about 200 baby calves coming first week of March sometime. Spring is in the air and its only February!

Wow busy at your place. I was just looking at more cattle for sale. I love my heifer. But I really have to be patient. I don't have room for a herd or much more than 2-3 total. Baby steps. I have no self control.
Today is going to be super busy. I was just trying to enjoy some coffee before I got moving. Wish me luck everyone. I need some good wishes this old body can hold up for the next couple of days!!

Good luck on the eggs...I haven't been brave enough to venture into the world of incubation yet.

Ah ha! Now I have to keep my pictures updated as my calves come. I only have 12 head that I own by myself, and I can sell those babies to whoever I want, see if I can get you to fall in love with a pretty girl! I could even deliver down there, we go to KC a few times a year and it would be close enough on the way. LOL

Congrats on the calf, cute little thing. I had thought at one time about getting some calves for growing out & butchering but that didn't happen. Instead I ended up several years later getting sheep to eat instead. We really like the lamb & the smaller animals are easier to care for so that worked out fine. As far as shipped eggs this is from someone who has bought a lot of shipped eggs, you will be very lucky to have half of them hatch. Even if the air cells are intact there can be damage you don't know about & they may start developing & stop at some point, they can die in the shell at any point, or just make it through hatch. Hatching is really hard work for chicks so some just don't make it through it & shipping is really hard on eggs. The postal service is pretty brutal to them no matter what people write on the box or put stickers on. The postal service has no idea how much we pay for these eggs we have shipped around the country. I have paid $100 for a batch of eggs to end up with nothing in the end. I'm not trying to discourage you, just being honest. It makes a huge difference in how the person packs the eggs. I got eggs awhile back from Oklahoma, not far right, well the gal didn't pack the eggs well at all & I ended up with one chick in the end out of 12 eggs. I got another batch from someone else who knew how to pack eggs & got a great hatch out of them, I think it was 8 out of 12 or something like that. Anyway, good luck to you, hope you get some cute little chicks, let us know. I have two exchequer leghorns in my laying flock & have had them for several years. They are very flighty like Leghorns are but they are good layers. I raise Mille Fleur Leghorns but haven't gotten any chicks from them since I changed out the rooster. I should get some this year so some of those may go in my laying flock because those others are getting older.

Oh & you never stop learning, there is always something new to learn no matter how long you've been raising chickens.

Yes I know that if we get half to hatch that will be awesome, I am honestly hoping for at least 2, but who knows. I'll probably have 6 hatch and they will all be roosters LOL. Its an impulse buy so if I get zero, I get zero and we try again later.

They are here! Had 4 dead out of 28, but that doesn't surprise me with the cold front. If they would have gotten here yesterday we would have been golden.

Cozy in the brooder, all have drank and most are eating. Here we go!
