Consolidated Kansas

We got hit by a major storm last night. It must have been a microburst because things are thrown in all directions. I plan to go out later and take pictures. Just what I needed...more unexpected work! I had one small pen turned over, the door and siding ripped off and a rooster penned underneath. We just put new tarps on a hoop coop yesterday and it got moved several feet. There is tin in the trees and branches everywhere.

I'm sorry for your damage danz, that's the pits. I know there was a very long line of storms last night & the wind was just crazy all day yesterday. It was about to drive me insane. The storms went east of us this time, thank goodness. I saw the lightening from them but we didn't even get any rain out of it. We could honestly use some rain, but not the storms.

I took about 20 pictures but after editing them to size can't figure out where they ended up. I've got to go out and clear some limbs and get some things moved before DH goes to bed . He's working night shift tonight.

I picked up some chicks this weekend and the lady said they were about 1-2 weeks old but I think they are older because some look like they have new feathers in. Anyway I have them in my office in a pack n play and hubby says they need to go because they smell( I think hes making it up, I've cleaned it twice already). What my question is, is since I have made the momma cave and on the lowest setting on the heat pad it is about 85 in there. If I put in the coop and raise it to med or high will that be warm enough for them.. The temp in coop right now is 70ish and I know here on Sat the low is 24 but the coop is insulated and draft free. Would they be ok out there?

Posted several pictures on facebook for those of you who know me from the storm last night. I'll just add a couple here.

I had a bird in here. It flipped the cage, tore off the door and landed on him. He is alive but can't walk

My grow out pen

A roof off another coop that landed on my turkey pen.

another view of my turkey pen.

Pieces of tin roofing that blew to the pasture and as far as the pond, about 1000 feet from where they were.
Needless to say I've been busy today trying to clean up the mess and didn't even make a dent

Those chicks look about right for 2 week old or a little older. I don't know that I'd trust the heat pad to keep it warm enough for the chicks. Do you have any kind of safe non-flammable heater you could use that is thermostaticly operated? It concerns me that you say your coop is draft free. That really is not good. I have an oil heater. Kind of like this: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Costway-...6030&wl11=online&wl12=154841377&wl13=&veh=sem
That has proven to be about the safest heater for a coop. I can set it on a low setting or turn it up if it gets really cold. It's a radiant heater so it takes a while to heat the space but does a wonderful job of keeping it nice and warm. I keep a thermometer out there so I can monitor the heat. But after many years I can just walk in and tell if the temp is about right or not.
I use heat pads for sick birds but only in a small tub or cage. I always use them on low. I'm afraid if you turn it up it will be too hot for the chicks to stand on and if they don't stand on it they may not be able to keep warm enough. The option however would be to wall mount it so they can get in close to it without actually standing on it. I still don't think it will radiate enough heat to keep them warm though in a larger area.

It would be great if you had a sweeter heater to hang out there for them to get under, but they are pretty pricey & you would have to order it online. I really love my sweeter heaters in the brooders I have. It's still too cold at night to put chicks out without heat.

Good heavens. That is a horrible mess. Are the birds mostly ok? I saw on FB that you had been caught in a storm and checked back here for more info. I haven't been on here for a while, though.
Well you know things aren't tidy around here, but now they are a lot less tidy. I'll get to it as I can. The birds are okay except for the one that was in the cage that got torn up. I should cull him cause he wasn't doing well anyway and now can't walk. I honestly wish he would die of natural causes so I don't have to do the deed.
