OH NO! HELP! Is there anyone watching that's in Lawrence? I think The Barred Rock is dead. As I said she went back further into the coop. I just went to check and she is under a low part way in back just laid out with head on ground. Couldn't see her face. but not moving. Another hen was standing over her. I know you folks who deal with lots of chickens on a daily basis will think this is nuts, but I don't know if I can deal with it on my own! My daughter is out of town.

Folks, I am having trouble getting the courage to pull her out from the back of the coop! Blinky the fierce RI RED is standing guard over her! Then what do I do? I've put in a call to the extension service, but the animal person is out!

Update: Winky the Barred Rock is gone. She's in a plastic bag, on ice in a cooler and I'm on my way to K-State to have her necropsied. Rest in peace good chicken!

There and back! Went over to K-State with Winky.
Highly recommend going over there if you have something unusual happen. The visual necropsy is free. They have a viewing area where you can watch. Work is done by Vet students supervised by a Prof.

It was obvious what caused it, she basically had an internal hemorage. They photographed because it was somewhat unusual to find in a bird of her age and situation.

Fatty liver hemorrhagic syndrome (FLHS) the diagnosis.

Since my chickens are fed a normal diet and the other hens are borderline thin, it was probably a constitutional/genetic thing.
Good to know it wasn't something contagious and at least Winky gave her body to science!

Later yesterday when it wasn't quite as hot and humid, I decided to paint the building that DH is supposed to roof. I got it all done. That thing was so thirsty. He didn't do any thing on it yesterday. Maybe he'll be more inclined to work on it today if it doesn't rain before he gets started.
He did drill a couple holes for me so the first thing I do out there today will be to plant my last two trees.
Some day I'll be able to cut down those nasty old elm trees, that although give shade have destroyed a lot of stuff with falling limbs. It's a shame cause they are nice big trees but they just keep causing damage. I hope these new ones grow fast.
I've been pumping out the old cistern for nearly 24 hours now. That sucker holds some water. I want to fill it in so I can build on a back porch or sun room some day. So the garden has been thoroughly watered. The goose pool has been filled etc etc. I plan to water some trees then route the rest to the ditch. I'll be so glad to get rid of that thing. The idea is to fill it so far then try to collapse the sides in to finish it. I think my farmer can do that with one of his big tractors. I don't have any equipment big enough to crush it.
I wish I could get a lot more done right now.
I had two ducks hatch babies. One of them only hatched one and the other hatched 9 of them I think. The one baby joined the other group and that Mom just kind of forgot it. I have one more duck sitting. I really should butcher a few more boys but there's no time to get it done.
@Plinky your post hadn't shown up. Sorry you lost your chicken. I've used the necropsy department before but shipped my bird overnight. It was sure pricy though. I did have a lot of extra stuff done. I always do my own necropsies but I don't have a centerfuge and microscope to do slides. Keep considering it. Since there are no vets close it's the next best thing. Almost always though I've found the cause of death without it.

Plinky I'm sorry about your hen. Chickens just get things wrong with them just like people. Sometimes you wonder why some live so long & others just don't.

It's been pretty crazy here and today it's raining by buckets. I guess that is so I will stay inside and clean up in here. DH didn't get the roof on the building and now it's probably not going to happen. My plans were to move the peacocks today.
I've got new babies hatching today and no place to put them. Go figure. I really didn't want to have babies in the house while I was recooperating from surgery.

We got more than our fair share of rain. And since most of the soil is torn up from septic line and window work it's a terrible muddy mess. I still have a few birds I wanted to move out of the brooder house into a grow out pen but rain is forecast the next few days and I won't be here to check on them.
I won't be posting again for a while. My surgery is tomorrow and it will be awhile before I am able to get in here to the computer, or feel like sitting here to read and write.
My day today is going to be super busy trying to finish up what I can around here.
I feel so out of control!!!

We got between 3 & 4 inches of rain here with 3 different storms, it was kind of crazy. The local news said there was a small tornado that touched down northwest of Winfield that took out a bunch of power poles so there was an area out of power. I'm glad it went in a less populated area.

Danz we're going to miss you while you're out of commission. We'll all be thinking of you. I hope your surgery goes well & you're back on your feet soon.

Has anyone heard from Lizzy since she had her surgery?
