Consolidated Kansas

We got between 3 & 4 inches of rain here with 3 different storms, it was kind of crazy. The local news said there was a small tornado that touched down northwest of Winfield that took out a bunch of power poles so there was an area out of power. I'm glad it went in a less populated area.

Danz we're going to miss you while you're out of commission. We'll all be thinking of you. I hope your surgery goes well & you're back on your feet soon.

Has anyone heard from Lizzy since she had her surgery?

Thank you for asking about me! I had sinus surgery only and am doing much better now. The big jaw joint replacement surgery won't be until next summer. I go this week to take the first step towards that surgery - braces! I'm not looking forward to it but know that it is necessary.

WE got a lot of rain here too, almost 2 inches last night with more in the forecast tonight, tomorrow and tomorrow night. I got rid of a bunch of animals and now only have chickens, horses, a dog, and a few barn cats that are half-wild. It is nice to have fewer chores, but I do miss the ducks' antics. Maybe some day I'll be able to get ducks again.

I'm glad you're doing well after your surgery. I'm sure the braces won't be fun but it will be easier than that jaw surgery though. I don't envy you that. It will be quiet on here without Danz for awhile. Hopefully her surgery will go well & she will be back before long.

From what I hear, Danz's surgery went well.

This morning, one of my juvenile chickens got stepped on by a horse. The bird isn't putting weight on the left leg. I can't tell if there are other injuries as the bird didn't want to let me look it over very well (my birds don't like to be handled). I put the bird in the chicken coop with food and water nearby. Is there anything else I can do for it? If I remember right, Danz said oregano essential oil was a painkiller for chickens? Or was it a different EO?

@lizzyGSR I thought it was St. John's Wort that was the painkiller, but I couldn't tell you the dosage since I have not used it. The Oregano is a natural antibiotic. If the leg is broken I don't know since you can't handle the chicken well. I have personally never had good luck with chickens that hurt their legs. They just don't seem to do that well. I guess it depends on what's wrong with it.

@lizzyGSR I found this in a previous post from Danz, "Give him some St. John's Wort. Just open an capsule and mix it in his water. It will look greenish black but they really like it. It acts as a pain reliever for chickens."

Thank you @Trish44 !

The chicken is doing as good as can be expected. S/he moves around regularly and is still acting alert, even though its not using that leg. This is my first injured chicken since I've started with chickens. I haven't had much luck with helping sick chickens, so we'll see how this goes.

@lizzyGSR let us know how she/he does whether it gets better or not. I had a rooster that broke his leg awhile back & he just never could use it again so I ended up having to put him down. It was a shame because he was a gorgeous Silver Penciled Rock, my backup rooster for my pen. I'm trying to grow out another one right now to replace him.

Hello! Long time, no see! Anyone want a pair of Wellies? I'm willing to party ways with a pullet if someone wants the fellow. Both hatched March. I need to move him soon or make soup. I'm in Lawrence. Chookschick@gmail dot com
