I have some eggs hatching and I have been worried about them.

Thanks chicken danz. There must have been something internal because I couldn't find anything external. I hadn't heard about a chicken being egg bound guess I will do some research on that. Does anyone have advice on when and how to introduce new chicks?
Lol, so many projects so little time and money! That's me!!

Has anyone ever done a chicken tour like the garden tours? I think it would be neat to do.

OMGosh, a Chicken Tour would be awesome! Everyone could open up their backyards to show off their coops and chickens! I love going on the Garden Tours and seeing what people have done with their backyards. Anyway, that would be a really cute idea. I wonder how many people are in my area? I saw the photos of the Wichita Cabin Coop- and obviously, he is nearby.

Tazcat- what kind of chicks are you hatching? I hope they all do okay!

Some of my own mixed eggs, and I got some really dark Welsummer eggs in a swap. I ended up hatching 3 Wellie chicks, and 5 of my own.

If I can ever get up North a fellow Kansan hatched some for me too.

oh wow!! Wish I'd known about that chicken coop tour that you posted the link to. It was in late April and we were in Austin, TX for over a week visiting during the same time. I suppose they have some sort of club, or council that organizes it. Is there something like that in the Wichita area? It doesn't seem likely, but I'm often surprised!

I think a Kansas "Back Yard Bird and Coop Tour" could be a on-line type of deal. My bird set up aint pretty, but Id be real interested in see'in everyone elses... Bill

I haven't built mine yet... so can't say one way or the other on how great it will be! LOL!! But the Tour sure sounds like a lot of fun. I have to agree, I bet we don't have quite the back yard following like Austin has.

So I was reading this post on the front page a bit ago where a chicken owner got all of her chickens slaughtered by two dogs that came in to her yard and attacked. She shot one of them, and the other ran off. Then she called the sheriff and they sorted it out. (chicken owner within her rights). Anyway, it makes me wonder about my own neighbor. I have a problem with his two dogs coming over here. It doesn't happen as much anymore as it used to. Once, his dog came over when I was washing the boat in the driveway and growled at us and lunged for my toddler when he was 2yrs old. Had I had a gun, he'd have been a dead dog. All I had was a soapy sponge. But, I called my neighbor and talked to him instead and he came over and we talked on my front porch. Basically he said, he won't be fencing his dogs, or doing anything different, and that if I needed to shoot his dogs it was MY problem, and to go ahead. I think he was bluffing a bit. It was not a pleasant conversation, though I was trying to be nice. We all live on 10 acre tracts out here- so we're in the country, but sort of in a tiny little development where we all built our homes. Everyone else has dogs- but they are careful with them, and a few of our neighbors have chickens, too. I'm closest to this guy's house. Since I started in on my chicken endeavor, I've been worried not about coyotes- but about his dogs. And trust me, I have plenty to worry about coyotes too- because 2 years ago, they ganged up and attacked my mare while she was sleeping in the middle of the night in the pasture. My husband shot at them, but it was dark and I don't think he hit anything. (and I was yelling NOT to kill my horse!) What do you all do with your neighbors? I'm thinking about calling him and telling him I'm getting chickens and I'm worried about his dogs. But maybe I shouldn't start trouble when there isn't any.... yet? It's sad, because if it weren't for his dogs, I would be able to free-range chickens behind my house during the day when I'm at home.
